Putting a king size duvet in sideways really does work

Bringflowersofthefairest · Yesterday 09:46

I read ages ago that a king size duvet is meant to go into the cover sideways rather than lengthways.
I thought this idea was a bit daft and forgot about it.
Yesterday whilst changing the bed I remembered it and decided to give it a whirl.
Ye Gods!
It bloody worked.
No more one freezing exposed arm because the duvet doesn’t quite fit over me when my husband hogs a lot of it unintentionally.
No more trying to hoick up the duvet that hangs over the bottom of the bed because of the length back on to the top for more warmth.
Plenty of spare duvet covering both of us and a lovely coziness all night long.
I was quite amazed.

What do you mean? A kingsize duvet doesn't go in "sideways" it goes in the correct way for a kingsize bed ie the long edge along the bottom.

Have you been putting it in the wrong way and having a foot of empty duvet cover hanging at the side of the bed?

Samewrinklesnewname · Yesterday 09:57

I spent forever putting it in the cover with the stitching on the duvet running top to bottom and it was never quite right.
a couple of years ago I turned it 90° so the stitching runs left to right and it fits like a glove…only took about 50 years to work it out 😂

So they’re square?

I still can’t work this out, we have a new superking and the bloody duvet never fits in the cover without the cover having a few inches of spare cover. I spend ages deliberating which way it goes even wrote on the bottom corner but still can’t get it right.

No, a kingsized duvet is rectangular. The long edge goes along the bottom of the bed.

Aleiha · Yesterday 10:07

Just to really blow your mind OP you should always size up (for aesthetic reasons). So for a kingsized bed you should actually have a superking duvet.

MurunBuchstansangursCousinRossiter · Yesterday 10:11

If the duvet isn’t square then there’ll be a right way and a wrong way to put it in the cover. If it’s in the wrong way you’ll have spare cover surely?

Bringflowersofthefairest · Yesterday 10:16

So instead of putting the duvet on the bed length ways then putting the cover on lengthways you put the duvet sideways on the bed(longest length sideways) then put the cover on lengthways as usual.
Its a bit difficult getting your head around it after doing it both lengthways for 30+ years

This is very confusing!

Surely a king size duvet is a rectangle. The cover is a rectangle. There is only one way the cover fits the duvet. The buttons of the cover will be at the bottom of the bed where your feet are.

But you never put it on lengthways since that wouldn't fit the wider bed size. The longer length is supposed to go along the bottom ie across the bed from one side to the other.

OP I think this might be an issue which is specific to you..

Hotandpointy · Yesterday 11:15

How do you put the duvet on the bed and then put the cover on?
I put the cover on the bed first and then shove the duvet in it and shake it out.

FourForksSake · Yesterday 11:19

I think this calls for a diagram.

I read somewhere that the label goes at bottom right (or top left obvs) which works for my superking. Same for sheets.

I always put it in lengthwise too. It has never occurred to me to put the duvet in sideways. Am going to try it. Yes, there’s empty bits of duvet cover at the side. I thought the duvet cover must have been made particularly big.

MimiSunshine · Yesterday 11:23

Huh? A king size duvet always has the long length across the bed.
your duvet cover goes on the same way.

if the duvet has stitching then they should be horizontal, in theory it stops the stuffing falling to the bottom.

ilovestayingin · Yesterday 11:41

Its only super king that go in sideways, they don’t fit otherwise. You’ll end up with spare material.

No, only a double duvet is square. All other duvet sizes are rectangular and the only one that has the longest length lengthways down the bed is a single.

JulietteHasAGun · Yesterday 11:50

Two single duvets in their own covers is even better

namechange62 · Yesterday 14:56

Wait until you have to work out a super king duvet (housekeeper/holiday cottage cleaner)

anothereastlondonmum · Yesterday 15:03

Omg I’m so confused about all of this?!! Can someone do an idiots guide please? Or a diagram?? 🙏
I have a Superkids bed and never know which way to do it plus often find spare material in the cover.

Aleiha · Yesterday 16:41

the buttons/press studs go along the bottom of the bed. Match up the long edge of the duvet with the button edge of the duvet cover.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · Yesterday 16:51

Fold the duvet and cover (separately) in half along the diagonal, find out the longest side of each. Then put the duvet in the cover that way. Then (this is the important bit) write on the bottom of the duvet with a sharpie, or use a safety pin at the bottom of the duvet.

CalpolOnToast · Yesterday 16:59

My mind is boggling here, surely you put the duvet in the cover with them both rotated the same way?
Cover landscape and duvet landscape? Not cover landscape and duvet portrait.
Why would you do otherwise? I must be missing something

Saturnalio · Yesterday 17:02

Or never change a duvet cover again, buy a coverless.. best buy ever!

60andcounting · Yesterday 17:04

MurunBuchstansangursCousinRossiter · Yesterday 09:58

Not square. The widest part goes across the bed. Not lengthwise.

Its not square so it goes across the bed in the widest way.
