FFS! So Spotify has now basically turned into YouTube?

I have been very encouraging of the DC to listen to music and podcasts. I've set up an old phone without a sim card completely locked down with only Spotify and BBC sounds.

They've got into some music and DS11 likes a football podcast. All good I thought.

But now I've just realised Spotify allows videos, and there are tonnes of mindless Minecraft and prank videos free to consume, and the DC have found them!

Gaaah!

We just use one shared Spotify account, is there any way to stop this? Or is there an alternative that allows access to music and podcasts and no videos!

Maybe I'm behind the times for only just realising Spotify was more than just music and podcasts.

I let mine do the same and didn't realise this either 😳 I thought it was just the odd music video.

I haven’t seen anything like and I’m chronically on Spotify. I know a lot of podcasts are using videos now

I didn't know this and I have premium, although I can't see what videos you mean? My kids are older teens so it doesn't technically matter but I'm pissed off on your behalf.
Do I avoid the crap by paying for premium maybe?

Yes, I discovered this a while ago. My dd has the free version of YouTube music instead, which doesn’t seem to have videos.

Can you get rid of the phone and they just listen via an Alexa or Bluetooth speaker instead?

BadgerWatch5 · 10/06/2026 21:12

Yeah I know an Alexa / Google thing is an option, but don't really want to go down that road if I don't have to. Annoying thing is we've used Spotify for years, got loads of playlists set up etc, and would be annoying to have to pay for an extra service.
What I really want is a toniebox designed for teens!

I've discovered you can turn all videos off in "content and display" settings, but nothing stopping the DC from turning them back on again, unless I pay extra for an additional child account I can control.

I think I may be ditching Spotify soon. It's moving too far away from music. Why do we need videos on Spotify?! It's not like there arn't a million other video doomscrolling apps.

@BadgerWatch5 They haven’t really changed their focus; they’re just playing music videos and podcasts. Keep in mind, you’re using an app that was originally built for an adult audience. You have the choice to set up content restrictions or pay for a child's account, but you're opting not to.

How are the following recommendations anything to do with music videos or podcasts?

Never have anything like that on mine. Again you have the children’s option to buy for your child
