I think the population in general immediately post WWI was in far worse health, what with undernourishment and such, than a cohort of young men and women fit enough to have been inducted into the US air force, possibly an elite in the matter of fitness in fact.

I’m not sure citing a novel pandemic flu is entirely reassuring.

Shrugs.

We're probably due another pandemic. Maybe this is it. Mercifully there aren't loads of people in the US who are due to travel out of it in the next few weeks, or I would be very worried.

Miami is tropical though.

And isn't in Texas, where this outbreak is.

"The outbreak comes just weeks after the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, ended mandatory flu vaccination for the military, citing the need for bodily autonomy for servicemembers.

“We’re seizing this moment to discard any absurd overreaching mandates that only weaken our war fighting capabilities,” said Hegseth in an April social media video. “In this case that includes the universal flu vaccine and the mandate behind it.

“Your body, your faith and your convictions are not negotiable,” said Hegseth."

Edit - quote from the Guardian article linked by @DuncinToffee

Hegseth is opposed to bodily autonomy when it comes to abortion and reproduction rights.

He has a Bible in one hand, an AR in the other, and a colt 45 on his hip.

Y'all Qaeda

And he just lost a war against a brutal authoritarian theocracy who pray to the same God as him. I predict his next step will be "more prayer needed".

These knobs are dangerous. And I cannot understate the revulsion I feel towards them.

There was no antibiotics then either. Certainly lockdown and compulsory wearing of masks was severely imposed - including threats of shooting if not observed, especially in St Louis.

Also lucky that DR Congo with a massive Ebola outbreak that went unnoticed due to USAID cuts didn’t qualify for WC. Oh wait…

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/06/2026 18:11

I have just assumed that what’s being reported as flu has actually been tested. Not bothering to test and assuming it’s flu but it’s actually Covid would make much more sense.

Antibiotics aren't really a viral treatment.

At his G7 speech Trump claimed the US have spent more on that outbreak than anyone else. I think he said 300 mil, but I need to check.

I do remember this though. One of his first 2nd term EOs I think.

However if you develop bacterial pneumonia post flu virus, then you will require antibiotics.

Eta which is why everything was heavily disinfected.

Antibiotics aren't really a viral treatment.

Anti-viral medication wasn't the best in 1919 either. Aspirin did exist, but many other drugs we take for granted didn't really show up until a bit later in the twentieth century.

Maybe it's like Freshers' Flu? Lots of young people congregated together.

@DancingFerret

I saw that report on CNN. Good for her on a strong rebuttal. No 'recollections may vary' for her!!

I'm sure it was probably the other way round, he wanted a pic with her and she couldn't get out of it! She's an attractive woman and I'm sure his ego told him "She wants you". Disgusting old pervert.

Justdancevance · 19/06/2026 19:54

I’ve rewatched the clip so many times with Hillary Clinton laughing at Michele’s Obamas comment about Obama winning the peace prize.

And his comments about Meloni are awful. good for her telling him to do one.

and his Iran deal is terrible and he’s running scared from being compared to Hoover.

DuncinToffee · 19/06/2026 20:24

The Obama Presidential Centre is a beautiful building.

I think our thread title is proving to be prophetic. The wheels are definitely wobbling bigly as the pushbacks start coming from several directions.

From your keyboard to God's monitor!

I agree, I'm seeing more pushback from more sources. Nothing really huge or 'direct' yet from the GOP in Congress but if things get loud enough in their constituencies, maybe those sycophants in the House and Senate who kiss is arse will start to wipe the shit from their lips and start to remember that he'll be gone in 945 days, but the voters will still be here. And watching.

RedTagAlan · 20/06/2026 04:39

This Meloni story is astounding. He just can't help himself can he.

“She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn’t have taken it, but I felt sorry for her,”

He is incapable of telling the truth about anything.

I used to work with a guy who was similar. At smoke breaks, before he came out, some of the guys used to pick a random subject to "test" him. To see if he had "done that" or was an expert. And usually he was. I am a keen fisher, and the fishing of the time might be a subject. And this fella had done it all of course. Caught Marlin, fished for Salmon in 1000 quid a day rivers, the lot. Then one day he said he was going to get back into fishing because his wife had bought him a 15 quid telescopic fishing set off QVC and he was going on about how fantastic it was. The rest of us just stared at each other.

I suppose that's the thing about Trump. We all recognize traits in him that we know other people that have the same. The problem is, that they are all bad traits.

The Obama Presidential Centre is a beautiful building.

We've been in that area several times over the last couple of years (one of my children is at the university) and I was skeptical when I first saw it as it looked really strange when it was going up, and not in keeping with the rest of the university (photo below). But I was there two weeks ago and was blown away by how lovely it is. The stained glass window looked spectacular and the area around is it beautifully done. I'm looking forward to going to see it next time.
