One persons weakness is another persons design feature.

Actually - too true. To all of your post.

I always make the mistake of thinking that there is, in the west, an agreement that democracy is a better system than all the others.

Of course, some do think that, but as you rightly point out, there are many who don't.

The fact that slaves counted as 3/5ths of real humans, and the existence of the electoral college should have alerted the rebels that they had been sold a pup.

I'm one of those who thinks ....horses for courses. I previously lived in a country governed by a 'benign' military dictatorshipfor a short while, and am of the opinion that it was what the country needed at the time. Maybe I was young and politically naive...

I get that too actually.

For me, philosophically, a population that chooses democracy is a population that is choosing freedom.

The cost of buying in is saying "no" to the liberty of doing what we want when we want but, that, in essence, is what gives us freedom. The rules free us to chose which type of life we want, and wether to go for it or not. On the other side of it the cost is not having a leader/dictator who takes the trouble of self governance away.

But the greeks were right imo. Most population cycle through various forms of political rule. Democracy brings the most benefit to the most people. But the wings are always filled with the few who want the most ,and want to rule over the many.

Let no one ever say that Trump can't multi-task.

“In a video message Monday, Newsom said federal agents have been knocking on his doors, demanding records and digging through years of “random documents” — “not because they found a crime, but because they’re simply trying to find one.”
Newsom, a vocal Trump foe who is has not shied away from a possible 2028 presidential run, did not detail any specific allegations against him or his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, that he believes might be under investigation.
“After calling for my arrest last year, Donald Trump directed his Department of Justice to investigate me,” Newsom said. “And just in the last week, I’ve learned his campaign has reached my own home: to get me, he’s coming after my wife, Jen.”
A Justice Department spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Very true.

On one these threads someone posted a fascinating video of the worlds empires from way back when to now.

The Roman Empire - hells bells - it really stayed a long time.

And actually, thinking aloud, the Catholic Church is the continuation of it as their way of management of the vast church reach is inherited from the Roman way of managing empire!

Dunno - I need to visit a rabbit hole.

I love a good rabbit hole; I'm very familiar with them.
Democracy brings the most benefit to the most people.
I so want to debate this idea ⬆but then we would end up arguing about definitions.😁

How much has Trump's war with Iran cost the world?
This article attempts to address tangible and intangible cost and is well worth a read.

Trump doesn't pay his creditors

The bit that angers me on Iran's behalf is Trump's claim that frozen Iranian funds will be used for compensation. Is he still mentioning it and how would it work? Pay GCC for damage; shipping companies, and most importantly the US to replace the missiles etc it used.

Quote : "Democracy brings the most benefit to the most people.".

Yeah, I disagree with that. Of course, it depends on how it is all defined as you say. And on what definitions mean, how things are defined, I reckon seeing how things are defined might be a POSITIVE from Trump. That is, how things are redefined from what most people (and the dictionaries say) think they mean.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others". The democratic west has used that against the Communist nations and dictatorships since not long after Orwell wrote it. Point the finger and giggle sort of thing. And now it is like BOOM.... oh, that applies to us as well.

I think it's fair to say that we had a cold war over that. In the West we are free and equal. "We should all aspire to that" is what the schoolbooks say. But look at the communists, they preach equality without meaning it. Because they redefined what it means, just as Orwell described it.

And now thanks to Trump, the West can now see how this doublespeak applies to them too.

Folks, we have a trillionaire now. And not only did he not do anything life changing to earn that, but he supports the far right. The far right that points their fingers at anyone who really does care about democracy and equality, and brands them as "leftist elite". The more equal than others.

I would argue that Trump and his doublespeak has brought us into the era of peak capitalism. Post truth, and peak capitalism. What a combination.

And I think the positive is that while previous leaders have tried to prevent this from happening because it would not be a good result for most, but now it is happening under Trump, it will become pretty clear to most that the previous leaders were right to try prevent it.

Now we just need to find new leaders to change things ?

Even Republicans not in the mood to congratulate him re the MOU.
Spineless and cuckolded - what has Congress actually achieved since Drumpf came back to power?

(NYT)
President Trump’s declaration that the United States and Iran had reached a preliminary agreement to halt hostilities drew cautious optimism and frustration from lawmakers on Capitol Hill, where even some Republicans were reluctant to praise a deal whose terms the administration has yet to disclose.
“We do not have an agreement just yet, so we will see when there is text out there,” Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota and the majority leader, told reporters at the Capitol. “I’m guessing there will be a high level of interest among our members.”
As they returned to Washington on Monday, senators in both parties said they welcomed any path away from war, but questioned why Congress had yet to receive details of a deal that could reshape U.S. involvement in the Middle East.
“If it is a secret deal, then how can I take it seriously?” Senator Thom Tillis, Republican of North Carolina, said Monday afternoon.
Mr. Thune said he expected the administration to brief lawmakers on the pact, and Democrats were demanding that top officials do so.
