How often do you mow your grass in summer?

I've just seen a comment on an old thread on MN about someone mowing their lawn every 3 days.

I tend to leave mine about 2 weeks or even 3 if we've been busier than usual. In the summer, by this point, it is pretty long I guess.

All of my neighbours have gravel/stones out the front or drives, we have slabs but a small strip of grass that to be fair only takes 10/15 minutes to go over properly. Should I be doing this more often?

I sometimes feel guilty that I'm making the street look messy but I work full time and have two children under 3...my partner is reasonably helpful around the house but genuinely cannot help me in the garden at all, he has extremely debilitating hayfever to the point he can't even go outside during the worst months, apart from to go to work (May-early August) or he's suffering and it sets off his asthma occasionally.

My neighbour, who again doesn't have grass out the front, has cut it on several occasions before I've had chance to sort it, which I would do on a weekend if it's dry. Honestly, it's started to pee me off a bit. It's not THAT bad, yes it needs a cut, but it's not like we've got a skip on it for months or old furniture out the front.

Ultimately it's just not that important to me I suppose. How often are you cutting your grass?

Never, it's pretty short though so I assume someone's doing it.

FoundAUserNameDownTheSofa · 08/06/2026 16:47

Weekly or every other week. Less when it’s dry and turns to dust with random scraggly bits.

AccountantWithCat · 08/06/2026 16:48

I've been doing 'no mow May' to disguise laziness for environmentalism. I've only just realised it's no longer May seeing this post. So er, yep, not very frequently.

Normally, every 2-4 weeks. It gets quite long and never gets cut very short as I can't move the position on the mower. I cut it if someone comes round.

I do ours most weeks unless it’s been really wet or too dry in the summer. Do you mean a neighbour is mowing your front garden for you?

Griever · 08/06/2026 16:52

We watch the weather and mow just before rain is coming

TheChosenTwo · 08/06/2026 16:55

Dh does ours twice a week during the months it grows the quickest. He speaks to a lawn person regularly about it 😴
Although it’s cut quite ‘long’ imo! Apparently it’s best to not cut it too short - who knew?!
I’ve never cut it, I hate anything to do with gardening other than lying in it to sunbathe.

redfairy · 08/06/2026 17:03

I've always done mine about twice a week even when the kids were little as I enjoyed it. But then again I don't iron anything 😁 Wouldn't your DH watch the kids while you nip out if its a 10 minute chore?

caringcarer · 08/06/2026 17:35

Back lawn about once every 5 days. Front lawn once a week.

caringcarer · 08/06/2026 17:36

Teen does it to earn extra a bit of extra money.

cinquanta · 08/06/2026 17:38

When it’s dry and needs it. Not that I actually do it.

Sparrowsandbudgies · 08/06/2026 17:39

Maybe once or twice a week at the height of summer when we’re using the garden a lot.

wonderstuff · 08/06/2026 17:42

I don’t mow mine in summer. I like having the grasshoppers. Dd says it’s because I cba, but I’m maintaining it’s for the bugs.

baaabaaa · 08/06/2026 17:48

Not as often as we should

Yeah, but I don't want or ask them to. It makes me feel lazy (I am a bit, but I would never let it get hazardous or encroaching on their property)

I also don't iron anything except shirts! Yeah, he would, I need to just go and do it. Secretly it is a job I kind of hate for some reason. It's been absolutely chucking it down here for days so it's sodden but that makes it grow so much quicker too!

SparrowFeet · 08/06/2026 17:58

It's one of those jobs where the thinking about it is far more work than the actual doing it. It's a 10 minute job if you don't have a lot of grass to mow, which sounds like you don't.
I hate doing it too but am always astounded by how long it doesn't take. A bit like hoovering out my car.

notanothernamesurely · 08/06/2026 18:06

About once a week

AfternoonTeaAddict · 08/06/2026 18:09

Once a month currently. But it's out of sight to everyone as it;s behind a large stone wall. I'd possibly do it more often if visible, but only possibly.

Springbuck · 08/06/2026 19:07

I read that as “all my neighbours have gravestones out the front” 😂

Anyway, weekly for me but gardening is my hobby and over summer I’m out there most days.

Two weeks is fine though, you’re busy don’t worry about it.

ScrambledTofuNeedsKalaNamak · 08/06/2026 22:19

Ideally weekly but it is rather large and so we don't always have time. We've just recently moved and previously had a low maintenance garden. I didn't realise plants and grass grew so quickly 🤣

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 09/06/2026 02:30

It’s got so long before that I had to strim it as the lawnmower couldn’t handle it.

Neighbours look like they do it every day and measure it with a ruler. It looks very sterile.

user1497787065 · 09/06/2026 02:52

At least once a week preferably every four to five days. We have 3/4 acre and leaving it for longer results in far too many tip trips.

Bryonyberries · 09/06/2026 06:27

As often as it needs it. In hot summers it often doesn’t need doing much. This type of weather more often. But depends if dry days and days off come together as to how often.

It can take a couple hours to do as my garden is fairly big and I have a little electric mower - I can never start petrol ones!

fetchacloth · 09/06/2026 20:27

I cut my grass about every two weeks depending on the weather.

DearDenimEagle · 10/06/2026 00:22

I laid a new lawn, took 3 and a half hours to cut, but it was new and well fertilised, grew like topsy, so during the summer it was cut every 2 or 3 days. Now I’m in a different house, poor grass on clay ground, it gets cut every week to 10 days..
