Does your town have an event that all the locals despise?

I think it's the races here.

No one who lives in the area has a good thing to say about race day.

Any sunny day in summer as it is totally crazy down here- people parked on roundabouts, rubbish everywhere etc.

Epsom right? Just went there today as my bank is there and it did look pretty chaotic on the roads with all the wages coned and fenced off.

Yes we have a huge religious festival that makes getting anywhere really difficult for locals .

Are you in Hampshire?

It’s not that we hate the fringe and the tattoo. It’s the absolute chaos it brings with it.

Howmayihelp · 04/06/2026 18:40

I love the Epsom races. I literally live right near the downs. I haven’t attended ladies/Derby day but I do go to the evening races with the entertainment after.
It’s a great atmosphere.

Yes. A fair that shuts of many of the main streets during August. It really affects local businesses and many just close while it's on. I avoid town like the plague when it's one as do lots of locals.

IOMQuestions · 04/06/2026 18:46

The TT, it is rather divisive, some people live for it all year, others hate it and either escape or hide in their houses for two weeks. I’m largely indifferent but like the atmosphere, but hate the random road closures and hearing the air ambulance go overhead with injured bikers. 80k population increases by 50k people….and motorbikes, treating all the roads as a racetrack….

North East Hampshire?

The Lent fair. A week long fair on the town meadows and up the high street. It’s been on since 1100 or something, though I very much doubt in its current guise which is loud and horrible fair ground rides, fast food stalls, tacky stalls and thousands of people.

Chester. It wasn't race day today, but I found myself checking if it is tomorrow or next weekend so I can plan.

It's a nightmare.

The summer holidays, Mothers Day, Fathers Day... I think that covers it.

Simply for traffic around a tourist attraction.

Race days get get lairy around the train station.
