Please explain a monzo card like im and idiot

How do you use a monzo card abroad, i mean where does the money cone from? Do you need to put money into your monzo account, is it like a normal bank account you put money in from another account then you use monzo card like a debit card?

What?? Why on earth would he need to do that?

You are seriously complicating and overthinking this. Monzo is an online bank. It works much like any other but without the fees.

It does let you create pots for cash in the app, which you can transfer cash around yourself. Not all accessed via the card, but that is to protect your money. You just transfer money from the chosen pot to the card when you need to.

I haven't used the pots system much yet as I am new to Monzo so I am still learning.

Leave him alone to manage his own money. No need to add in the complication of him transferring 99% of it to you! Just why?

How can they not take Monzo? Do they not take Mastercard? Because Monzo is just Mastercard… that seems like they’ve misunderstood what it is and think it’s a pre-paid card or a weird type of credit card. Might be a policy they’ve got wrong.

Same as any other bank. You freeze/unfreeze the card in the app if this happens.

I think they do take Monzo. I'm sure my DH used his with them in February. It's an Access card. Could be wrong though and we had a lot else going on for us back then.

TUI do take other credit/debit cards too and I always have one with me in case of this sort of thing.

Monzo is my main bank, is also DH's and The DC's
TUI said they couldn't take it onboard a couple of years ago, standard Debit card from our accounts
I ended up using my Business Credit Card instead
Maybe its changed now though

I’ve had issues with Monzo on aircraft and also wasn’t bled to withdraw money at the post office. No other issues though at home or abroad and I’ve had it many years

I’ve not flown (they’re expensive 🤣) with them so guessing there’s a few at it. It’s my main spending bank too and fabulous for everything else.

I went to bingo and they didn’t take it - that was quite recently. I don’t know what makes it different. The airline for me was either Ryanair (shudder) or wizzair I think as they’re the two I normally use. Last time I flew Ryanair and they did take it but they said “we do accept it now” so I think it’s changed - perhaps based on it now being fully approved?!

Oh and it’s not a misunderstood policy. I used the card and it didn’t go through. They then saw it was Monzo and said they don’t accept.

Isn't it just a normal bank card so you use it exactly the same as you would use any bank card.

I use a Currensea card which sits on top of my normal bank account, so I don’t have to transfer money over it just takes it when I use the card to spend in whatever currency. I think I paid £5 up front, but no fees after that.

I use Monzo for travelling due to the no fees. I transfer from my everyday bank account to my Monzo. I have the physical card and on my phone. It tells me my daily spends which is good for holiday budgeting.

DP and I also use it for social things. Stops the how got what last. We just top it up and go out.

If he’s old enough to go travelling abroad, he’s old enough to open an app and move money across from one pot to another.

If they take Mastercard then they “take” Monzo. Monzo is a bank.

I think people are asking the staff “do you take Monzo” and they don’t know so they say no when actually nobody would walk up to the counter and say “do you take Lloyds?”

The exception to this is the likes of TUI who have failed to keep their offline systems up to date. As Monzo was originally a prepaid card their old systems recognise it as such. You can often bypass this by adding it to your apple wallet but it’s not a given so I wouldn’t rely on that.

Irrelevant for the bingo though who are presumably not operating 34,000 feet up.

It does matter, you should always pay in euro where you can as the exchange rate is better so it costs less in £ done that way. If you pay in £ abroad then you are using their exchange rate, rather than the one Monzo gives you.

Also the good thing with Monzo (that I can't do with nationwide) is I created a virtual card in the app to use when I lost my physical bank card on day one of holiday.

I could then add the virtual card to my Google pay and then used that for everything

Yes true but it’s not a huge difference IMO. That’s probably more to do with my adhd that I prefer to click £ as then I know exactly what I’m paying haha but I always try and take cash as when on holiday as all of these places much prefer cash

Are you ok? It’s the Monzo part of it that’s the problem. Whether that’s changed, like the airlines, I don’t know but all I can say is last time I was there they couldn’t take it.

I don’t know what to tell you. I tried to use my Apple Pay Monzo card and it wouldn’t work. They said we don’t take Monzo. I used my other Apple Pay card with no issues. I didn’t ask them. I don’t ask people if they take it, I just use it.

As a PP said you can't use Monzo to withdraw cash at a PO either
Other than that and TUI I have used mine with no issues worldwide
