Road trip suggestions in Europe for a 7 yr old?

DS(7) and I are going to Belgium for a kids camp in July, and have the opportunity to stay in Europe for up to 2 more weeks road-tripping. Or we could just go home.

I'm wondering if we'd find enough to do that we'd both be entertained enough. My criteria are quite simple
...I don't want to be the sole entertainer all day but am otherwise easily pleased.

DS loves adventure, if its hands on, so museums you can get stuck into and play / soft play / activities / boats / beaches

Would be easy to go home and do day trips from there as obviously we know where to go in the UK, can ask friends to join us / take grandparents along.

But it also seems like we could have a very memorable road trip if I play it right, so I wanted to check for recommendations of things to do in Europe too.

Any suggestions?

Happy to drive long distances so we could go anywhere on the mainland

We did a large chunk of the fairytale route in Germany a couple of years ago, we loved it. Highlights were Grimm World (very modern brothers Grimm museum), Hamlin - particularly a pancake restaurant decorated with rats, and a slightly creepy fairytale house depicting scenes from various fairytales. Do the drive while listening to the Grimm Grimmer Grimmest podcast, as long as your 7 year old isn’t easily scared.

The German Fairy Tale Route is a travel destination that focuses on the Brothers Grimm and other famous stories. With its many cities, villages, castles, and forests, fairy tales come to life.

What a lovely idea! There are some great places for kids in the Netherlands. I'm thinking of Efteling, Zaandvoort and the children's museums like NEMO in Amsterdam or Stedelijk in Alkmaar.
