Is this outfit totally wrong for first day in new job tomorrow?

It’s the shoes isn’t it?

I don’t know the dress code exactly but it’s legal profession and being relatively smart is expected. I have many variations of blazers / trousers/ shirts and tips but I live in trainers and shoes baffle me.

are these all wrong? I could swap for some nice Gucci black flats but they’re a bit clompy.

any advice gratefully received

Oh and although it’s a law type environment this does not mean people are in suits! They’re more than likely not. I just want to play safer on my first day

Looking more at this photo and I’ve answered my own question.

garden party shoes! That’s what they remind me of

Yes, the shoes don’t go, they are holiday shoes. And the jacket looks massive on you. Lastly, red and black is very 90s, maybe back to the wardrobe and try the Gucci flats? Good luck in your new job!

pitchblackromance · 31/05/2026 20:15

Id swap out for the flats - good luck!

JustaDream · 31/05/2026 20:16

The ropey material is giving too much casual to an otherwise formal, and well put together, outfit. You spotted it correctly!

TooOrangey · 31/05/2026 20:16

The shoes are not working.

SamAylward · 31/05/2026 20:16

Use the flats (retired lawyer here). Outfit otherwise is very nice.

BatFinkk · 31/05/2026 20:16

ok.

I’ll swap for a lighter shirt in beige and I’ll go for black flats. Got some suede loafers actually

It's totally the shoes ! Those are sandals.

Black flats would be good.

HalfMumHalfBiccit · 31/05/2026 20:17

Put the black flats on. Observe what everyone wears tomorrow then re assess :)

hallenbad · 31/05/2026 20:18

Agree with proposed changes. Law offices are definitely more casual than the past but toes stay covered!

Laiste · 31/05/2026 20:18

Yes a lighter/more delicate colour shirt too i agree. Red is a little wintery.

Which is prob why the sandals clashed so badly actually.

Smiless · 31/05/2026 20:20

Your question is well answered by now so I'm just here to say, the very best of good luck in your new job and well done!

BatFinkk · 31/05/2026 20:21

Oof! Red and black being dated! You could have a point! And I pride myself on being as up to date as possible 😀 ok - I’m going for a beige shirt and these shoes ….

Black shoes look great 👍

Thank you all 😘

Best of luck in the new job, you will look great.

I was just thinking, you can't beat a pair of black tapered/narrow trousers for a tailored look.

All those massive wide legs are doing my head in, they never look good and some of them are like sails. Am I alone here? I don't even like them for casual wear, there's just far too much fabric in them! Ok just me so.

Sounds perfect - good luck!

BatFinkk · 31/05/2026 20:35

@fantam. I agree. I can’t wear anything wide leg really as I’m short so they look extra silly

The loafers are spot on. I also happen to think the red blouse is fine too, beige sounds a bit meh. (but I'm more than a little dated myself).
