My mother brought her daughters up to pick mould off bread and eat it anyway, and to drink milk that was close enough to turning it tasted odd but hadn't quite got lumpy.
I didn't realise it was wrong until I learned that my brother, who was a few years younger, was not brought up to eat mouldy bread or spoiled milk.
She only did that to her daughters.
She treated things like yoghurts, jam etc.. the same way.
Spoon off the mouldy bit if you are a girl, throw it out and get new if you are a boy.
We used to get worms regularly as children, although I'm not sure what from.
It was not about finances, they were well off and my mother controlled all the finances in the house.
You couldn't pay me to touch anything that I even feel may be on the turn now.
The only thing I still eat from my childhood is toad in the hole.
I don't make it like she did though, she used to use those strange supermarket sausages that are more like a tube of paste and I use real butchers sausages.
I use fresh milk too.
