Why would anyone buy three expensive coffee machines?

Why did Peter Murrell need 3 expensive coffee machines? I know this is the tip of the iceberg and there has been other threads.

But can't get my head round why anyone would need 3 of the same thing, when it's all rather pricey 😅

I don’t know anything about this but I have three Nespresso machines in my house. One in the kitchen, one in my office and one in the guest suite.

Did you spend over £7k on them? Because Peter Murrell did.

Hell no. Just explaining why someone may want 3 coffee machines.

CaptainMyCaptain · 31/05/2026 07:53

I dont think he necessarily bought them all at the same time. His spending spree was over 12 years. Also they may have been in different places - home, office, another place where he would need to entertain guests - possibly.

GCAcademic · 31/05/2026 07:54

One for home, one for the office, one for the motorhome.

I think l might like to come and stay in your guest suite. I do anything for a nice coffee first thing 😀.

Desperatelyseekinglazysusan · 31/05/2026 08:01

From some of the stuff he was buying, I don't think there was a reason. He just bought stuff for the sake of it. I wonder if Niccola Sturgeon thought "Not another £££ coffee machine/salt shaker/foot spa!"

Me too. I might get one for my bedroom!

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 31/05/2026 08:04

Whatever he was doing, it was a waste of money (even if he’d never been caught).

We have a Jura and the last one lasted five years being used 6-8 times a day! Goodness only knows what he was doing to them.

But just to say, we have two. A Jura (nice one) and a cheapo Nespresso one that sits in the office after being removed from my work office for failing to meet safety standards.

Gifts/ more than one house?

Hoping and praying noone ever lists out 12 years of my shopping Grin

This is a very random hill that I wish to die on.

I hate Nicola Sturgeon, not least for what she has done to women’s rights in Scotland. BUT, the whole “how did she not notice when an expensive coffee machine turned up in her kitchen?” thing I am seeing all over social media is really annoying me.

They were two middle aged, professional people with decent salaries and no children. I’ve checked the coffee machines she has been photographed with in her kitchen. One was a DeLonghi that sells for something between £1-2k. It’s hardly the flashiest thing in the world and not a weird idea that they would be able to afford it in any case? I know it was all with stolen money but it’s hardly like he came home with a Ferrari. A couple of nice coffee machines over many years would seem the kind of thing that would fit well within their incomes and lifestyle. So no, I don’t think it’s an incredibly flashy thing to own and that on its own doesn’t make me think she must have known.

Obviously Murrell deserves his comeuppance and the SNP should open themselves up to more scrutiny in any case because it seems like their finances are a mess and they think they are above decent auditing.

Pedallleur · 31/05/2026 08:19

Why not? They didn't cost him anything. Might have wanted one, then saw a better one then one with bigger knobs. But they were free. Probably made him feel great spending £££ on them

onpills4godsake · 31/05/2026 08:21

One in the kitchen, one in the office and maybe an annex?

Ok that's true. I take it back! I also agree that how on earth did the SNP not notice where the money was going?

Agreed.

DH and I don't discuss every single purchase and actually he bought be a coffee machine a year or two ago and I have no idea how much it cost. Never crossed my mind to check

And I can only imagine that NS was properly flat out with work sometimes so had even less time than the average person to pay close attention

Except there’s the video of Sturgeon viciously shutting down members of the NEC asking questions. She signed off the accounts when the treasure refused to. Shes clearly lying when she said she was never in the kitchen if their house so didn’t notice the expensive gadgets.

and the camper can on her mother in laws driveway and the separate line for it in the accounts she signed off?!?!

Nah. She knew.

TotalBaloney · 31/05/2026 08:31

We have 3 coffee machines. One in the kitchen, one in DH’s office and one in the ‘snug’ which is separate to the house. Granted they weren’t as expensive as those in question, but we don’t earn as much money as them.

I’d agree with you if, at the first sign of the party finances being questioned, she had brought in forensic accountants and commissioned a full audit. It’s the endless defending, refusing to give access to the accounts that makes me think she knew something was amiss. If she was so sure everything was fine, why not have that fully checked out.

Nah. She knew.

I have no issues with the idea that she knew (in which case she should also face criminal proceedings) and honestly I think the whole party just doesn’t like scrutiny.

It’s just that I don’t think the coffee machines mean she should have known. I think people going on about how much they cost as if the cost is simply outrageous and should have set alarm bells ringing is just overdoing it. They are relatively expensive but not crazily expensive coffee machines and don’t stand out as particularly profligate given their household income, lack of dependents etc.

I wouldn’t be shocked to my very core if people in my circle own coffee machines like it. Some people really like coffee 🤷‍♀️

I thought the point really was that Murrell hid his stealing by literally just spending it on some fairly mundane items and some a bit more extravagant but still plausible items over many years. If he’d gone out and bought a second property in Spain in one go it would all have been a bit more obvious.

Notsosweetcaroline · 31/05/2026 08:38

The man spent 2 and a half grand on salt and pepper shakers. There is no way I can perceive how Nicola didn’t know. If my husband turned up with a 120 k motor home, spunked 2 and a half grand on salt and pepper shakers, bought 3 expensive coffee machines, smythson bags, expensive watches etc, I’d be at least a bit suspicious if he earned 107k a year.

It wasn’t mundane, the man earned 107k a year, he was buying expensive watches, cars, bags, motor home, he was spending proliferatly. It wasn’t coffee machines in isolation or mundane,

concertinacornflake · 31/05/2026 08:41

I don't understand why people are asking this - if someone is addicted to shopping funded through embezzlement, I'm not sure it's rational thinking.

Loads of people buy items they don't need, some do it with stolen money.

What's complicated about this?

But 2 cars and a motor home are pretty obvious spends, I think any wife would question where the money came from for those.

If my husband bought new salt and pepper shakers I would assume they couldn't have cost him more than £20 and it wouldn't even cross my mind to check (just by way of example).
