Why would anyone buy three expensive coffee machines?

Why did Peter Murrell need 3 expensive coffee machines? I know this is the tip of the iceberg and there has been other threads.

But can't get my head round why anyone would need 3 of the same thing, when it's all rather pricey 😅

I think l might like to come and stay in your guest suite. I do anything for a nice coffee first thing 😀.

We have one in our guest room and they all troop downstairs and make tea. We have recently put a kettle in there too.

She signed off the accounts when the treasure refused to.

Just a tiny red flag….

It wasn’t mundane, the man earned 107k a year, he was buying expensive watches, cars, bags, motor home, he was spending proliferatly. It wasn’t coffee machines in isolation or mundane,

Yep 100k doesn’t fund that.

In terms of why 3 coffee machines, why not when someone else is paying.

WonderingWanda · 31/05/2026 08:46

My dh is always on the quest for better coffee and we have owned at least 5 different machines which have then been sold on marketplace. Each time the machine gets fancier and more expensive. It's like a hobby. We had a coffee grinder at one point but now we have a machine which grinds the coffee.

icybreeze · 31/05/2026 08:43

If my husband bought new salt and pepper shakers I would assume they couldn't have cost him more than £20 and it wouldn't even cross my mind to check (just by way of example).

Right, but the expensive bags, watches, cars, motor home? In a 100k a year, would you still not check?

This is a very random hill that I wish to die on.

I hate Nicola Sturgeon, not least for what she has done to women’s rights in Scotland. BUT, the whole “how did she not notice when an expensive coffee machine turned up in her kitchen?” thing I am seeing all over social media is really annoying me.

They were two middle aged, professional people with decent salaries and no children. I’ve checked the coffee machines she has been photographed with in her kitchen. One was a DeLonghi that sells for something between £1-2k. It’s hardly the flashiest thing in the world and not a weird idea that they would be able to afford it in any case? I know it was all with stolen money but it’s hardly like he came home with a Ferrari. A couple of nice coffee machines over many years would seem the kind of thing that would fit well within their incomes and lifestyle. So no, I don’t think it’s an incredibly flashy thing to own and that on its own doesn’t make me think she must have known.

Obviously Murrell deserves his comeuppance and the SNP should open themselves up to more scrutiny in any case because it seems like their finances are a mess and they think they are above decent auditing.

The thing is it's not just the coffee machines in isolation - it's the coffee machines and the jewellery and the pens and the huge motor home parked on the in-laws drive.
Given their respective jobs, she would have known what he was earning and even with no kids, he was spending a lot of money. I don't believe for one minute that any normal wife wouldn't have a conversation about this, let alone one who is a politician. A politician who was constantly banging on about the evils of Tory sleaze and how much better off Scotland would be if it was completely independent under SNP rule. And here we are - at best she's thick and at worst she's corrupt.

I note she's moved to England now - the irony can't have escaped her. Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party have been remarkably restrained imo.

Re coffee machines - I don't get the love for spendy ones. I've got a cheap pod one that's great for convenience and if I want a really good coffee, the little stove top metal espresso makers are great and about £20.

Plishplosh · 31/05/2026 08:47

Don’t know much about this other than he’s been found guilty but if it’s stolen money surely it’s not that surprising!

They probably had different selling points or functions.

Or he liked the look of all of them and is clearly a coffee enthusiast. I don’t know maybe it’s a bit like buying 3 similar but slightly different looking expensive bags.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 31/05/2026 08:49

@Thistimearound he did buy a Jaguar though, just not a Ferrari.

TotalBaloney · 31/05/2026 08:49

Jellycatspyjamas · 31/05/2026 08:42

But 2 cars and a motor home are pretty obvious spends, I think any wife would question where the money came from for those.

Yes, but this thread was specifically about the coffee machines.
I think NS knew, and I can’t see how she wouldn’t have noticed the extravagant spending that was disproportionate to his income. I don’t think owning 3 expensive coffee machines alone would be indicative of a crime by themselves though. I have 3 and I haven’t embezzled anything!

Well no, but the conversation is allowed to look at it In its entirety,

Plishplosh · 31/05/2026 08:51

Thats what they all say 🤨

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 31/05/2026 08:52

I imagine that Nicola Sturgeon trusted him, as her husband. But that said, I think there was a conflict of interest with him being in that SNP role where his boss, who was also his wife, could sign off on things. That's a governance issue. The pair of them had things stitched up between them and he should never have been in that role once she became party leader.

FaceForRadioIII · 31/05/2026 08:58

I was married to someone who loved shopping, everything he bought had to be 'the best', well researched, expensive. I'd 🙄, but he was a grown up and earned a lot of money. We'd have multiples of things too, because the new one was somehow better and the old one could go in the office/summerhouse/spare bedroom etc.

Being married to a big spender makes you a bit immune to the amount of stuff that gets delivered over time. This took place over years and years and NS had her own job/career to worry about. I am not a remote fan of NS, but I do understand how her not questioning his spending could have happened if she didn't have oversight of daily expenditure.

Of course my XH was spending his own money, but he was a high earner so I didn't question it.

ETA - I worry about money much less post divorce despite my household income being reduced.

But why is it that people are fixated on the coffee machines? That is my point. For two people on those kind of salaries with no student loans, no children and a fairly affordable house, it wouldn’t strike it as odd to most people to see a DeLonghi coffee machine in the kitchen. That’s literally all I’m saying. It’s the weird way that of all the spending people have decided that it is the coffee machines that are so outrageous and prove his and her guilt that I can’t get my head around.

I also read he bought a Sims expansion pack on SNP finances so there was lots of very random, mundane spending too! Although maybe that one was a joke?!

We should be focusing on the motor home or the watches. But for some reason it’s “Nicola Sturgeon had a coffee machine in her very kitchen that cost 1-2k, this is the height of decadence and no one could plausibly believe that anyone but Elon Musk could afford this, therefore she must have known!” is the bit that is just baffling me.

For the same reason he bought two hairdryers despite having no hair.
Because he could.

FaceForRadioIII · 31/05/2026 09:10

@Thistimearound I just 🙄when LauraK referenced the coffee machines. I don't think NS knew personally.

I mean that sounds like a shopping addiction. But the wider point is that we know what he bought so someone at the SNP must have signed off on the receipts surely?

Well usually it’s your boss that signs off work receipts so…

I'm not sure I could tell the difference between a £300 watch/bag and a £3000 one so not necessarily

The cars /motorhome - yes. But given the average shop assistant seems to drive around in a £60k SUV these days I am not sure it's as eyebrow raising as people are making out. With no kids they could presumably have afforded to get these things on finance

Same I don’t get this. He presumably had income, or shared hers. Why would she be suspicious of medium purchases?!? D

stinks of desperation to blame the woman

Aiming4Optimistic · 31/05/2026 09:44

It's not 'blaming the woman'. She's not your average wife - she was head of the SNP!

Crafta · 31/05/2026 09:44

I would be annoyed that he had bought one and not asked if there was a particular one that I would like so we could choose it together, let alone three

Her role did not include daily oversight of the accounts though, the accounts were audited by external accountants, verified by the statutory body in Scotland (can't remember the name of the body). She was busy running the country. I do not run a country, but I do have a responsible job where I trust the people who report to me to do their job. She will have done the same while spinning all the plates her job required.

I actually do believe NS and I have never been a fan of her as a politician, ever.
