Do you call it a clothes horse?

So I need a new thing to put over the bath to dry my clothes. I have 2 questions:

  1. Do you call it a clothes horse? Is this weird?
  2. Can you recommend one? Last one was wilko and 26 years old at this point 😂

Do you mean a Sheila Maid? This is what I call my ceiling airer. The one who stands on his own hooves to dry things is indeed the clothes horse.

Have a look on Amazon for Sheila Maid.

TeflonMom · 30/05/2026 21:32

Ikea have some nice compact ones

'Hooves" helps me see your point but I love the horse, and although she is throughly ready for the knackers yard at this point, she lives on, over the bath perching on her little cloven hooves 😂

Not the point but horses don’t have cloven hooves. Cows, pigs and sheep do.

We always have had a clothes horse-until we recently got a heated one. We now have a cat warmer.

upinaballoon · 30/05/2026 21:46

Yes, I do call it a clothes horse but if someone called it a maiden I would not be surprised. If I needed a new one I'd look in the supermarket or a B and M sort of shop.
Edit to say I do have a smaller one, which goes nicely over the bath. I think I call it the 'over the bath thing'. Lots of rails with umpteen things dripping into the bath if needs be, for those strange household things which get a wash every now and again and are best left to drip.

TokenGinger · 30/05/2026 21:48

I don’t have this yet, but it’s on my wish list. I like that it extends so I can cover the full width of the bath, but then it retracts back in for storage: https://www.amazon.co.uk/BLACK-DECKER-Extendable-Adjustable-Rotation/dp/B0BM4KB6T5

It’s a rack to me, which is what my parents called it.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 30/05/2026 21:19

I have just read it is sometimes a Winterdyke in Scotland and a Winterhedge in Lancashire which I have never heard of (I am am from Lancashire)

I was coming on to say this - grew up in Scotland and it was “the winterdyke” presumably because you hang the clothes indoors in winter (although it’s bloody all year round in Scotland now!).

VerityUnreasonble · 30/05/2026 21:53

We dry our clothes on the maiden but I think I'd be tempted to call the sort that hangs from the ceiling an airer (because it's in the air?). We lack horses here.

Long ago, the contraption that went up to the ceiling on a pulley was called the rack by my family. Clothes rack, I suppose. I still have a hankering for one.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 30/05/2026 21:59

@upinaballoon get one, live your life! Fulfil your dreams! 😂

I want a bath one - we have a tiny house 😂😂

We don’t even have a bath in our tiny house!
I have a free standing clothes horse.
Thankful for the sunny weather so I can line dry.
Oh - just remembered bed is not remade after washing linen. Off I go!

canuckup · 30/05/2026 22:03

Maiden

Ahhhh fair enough! My mother, having kept horses for years, genuinely thought donkeys had cloven feet. 🙈 🫏 🐮

I don't own one or want one but I would call it a 'clothes airer'.

mycarhasnoaircon · 30/05/2026 22:21

I love my heated drying rack.

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/05/2026 22:33

We have a maiden too

Happyholidays78 · 30/05/2026 22:34

I call it an airer but my nanny always called it a clothes horse & I thought it was a Northern/Yorkshire thing.

TheLilacFinch · 30/05/2026 22:34

I call it an airer but never ever in my 34 years of life have I seen an over the bath one!? That’s so clever
