Job in residential childcare?

I’m looking at going back to work as a SAHM for the last 6 years.

A job has come up in a local residential kids home which I’m really excited about and they will help you gain qualifications too which is what I’m looking for.
Can anyone give me an idea of what it’s like shift wise and working around your own family too? Am I better doing sessional zero hours or contract?

thank you!

There are usually teens in these units so the work can be challenging, particularly at night. A lot of them will have had unsettled lives and will be acting out trauma. Things like self harming, fights, taking substances, depression etc. The pay is ok and there’s usually an enhanced night rate and lots of opportunities for extra shifts or doing things like approved adult at the police station or accompanying a young person to meetings. You might have to make a meal for them although the bigger units have their own catering staff. It’s not easy work but it is rewarding and you’ll learn a lot, particularly if they’re willing to send you on courses.
