Exeter Uni Open Day

Hello! DD and I are heading to Exeter tomorrow from Kent for the open day. Would very much appreciate any advice re parking etc.
My current plan is to drive to Tiverton Parkway Station, park in the station car park, then grab a train to Exeter St David’s. I’ve been assured that there will be student volunteers at the station to direct us up the hill to the Streatham campus.
Originally, I was going to try and park in the city centre, but being not only the open day, but also the end of half term, I’m expecting it to be packed. DD is AuDHD and gets v stressed if we find ourselves stuck in traffic / looking for spaces, which I’d like to avoid, as if she gets too anxious then the whole excursion will be pointless.
Any other advice or tips very gratefully received! Thank you ☺️

I’m heading there tomorrow with my DS, booked a parking space on JustPark and plan to uber it to campus!

Hi, there are park and rides on both sides of the city

TotallyBogusYeah · 29/05/2026 18:20

Ooh that’s a good shout, thank you. I’ll see if there’s anything left on there.

@anomymetoo- I was wondering about those, I’ll do a bit of research.

I booked parking on campus only a few days ago as part of my open day booking. Have now cancelled the whole visit so there may be some spots left!
it is super easy to get from the station to the uni but is a steep hill. There were mini buses when went a couple of years ago but was quite a queue. We walked one time and hopped in a taxi with another mum and child the next time.

TotallyBogusYeah · 29/05/2026 21:34

@examsahead- oh that’s interesting, I assumed all the spaces were gone. I will investigate- thank you.

We went year before last on the Friday and the traffic coming home from Devon was hideous. Took us over 6 hours (we did drive the whole way) - that’s to London / Surrey borders.

TotallyBogusYeah · 30/05/2026 07:21

@snowymarbles - oh god, this is what I’m dreading. Hate sitting in traffic!!

I have accidentally gone into Exeter on an open day and there has still been parking left. However your plan re Tiverton parkway is good as well. It’s not far from the station to the uni and basically a straight line, it’s just a steep hill.

It might be changeover day for everyone that has been here for half term so traffic leaving could be bad, I know there was lots of traffic coming down last Saturday as we were driving up to the in laws.

SweetValleyHighPriestess · 30/05/2026 07:32

This may be a bit late for you now, but at Tiverton parkway station there are two car parks. A big one on the left before the station and a smaller one at the station. Often the smaller one looks full but head to the ‘deadend at the far back’ and you often find a hidden space there. If parking in the first, give yourself a bit of time as it’s a 5 min walk to the station. The toilets are on the platform (to the left) and are much nicer than exeters.
Uni is easy and not too far to walk from the station. Have a fab time, would love to hear what you think of Exeter uni!

Dd went to Exeter uni. Those hills are a work out 😮‍💨 She was super fit by the time she left 😄

Ventress · 30/05/2026 07:56

We went last year. Great open day, hope you and your daughter enjoy it.

we went by train from Reading and then walked to campus from the station. There were buses but walking up the hill was fine for us 😊

Linguist1979 · 30/05/2026 08:58

We went yesterday and marked in Magdalen street car park and walked.

Exeter University is fabulous! The most beautiful campus, with a lovely shady aboretum and some beautiful ponds if you want to sit somewhere quiet.

I would go to Exeter St Davids and get either the minibus (there are plenty, but they will be busy) or a taxi. Don't try to walk - it's a very steep walk and a hot day and there's no point in getting hot and flustered before you even get there. You can always walk back to the station.

having said all that - you have probably already made your arrangements and are on your way. Have a great day!

Hello! Thanks to everyone who commented - we are still in Exeter, just grabbing a bite to eat. We ended up going with the original plan of parking at Tiverton Parkway and it was seamless. We did end up trudging up the hill, gosh that was a workout!
Very pleased to say that DD loved the campus and the town. Exeter is now her number one choice, she just needs to score 3 grade A’s now!

Very glad she liked it. Did you get to see any of the campus? It's very beautiful.

Lovely, good luck, hope your daughter gets to go there.
