Ideas for stuff to do in and around Lyme Regis

I'm going to Lyme Regis in about a month's time - a friend has booked a cottage and I'm going to stay with her for the first week. Has anyone got ideas on what is good to do around there? We aren't beach worshippers (but like a walk on the beach when it's quiet) but we do like exploring - but we are not serious walkers! We walked the SW coastal path last summer and it knackered us! No kids with us, just two 30-something friends wanting a relaxing time and chilling out. It will be out of school holidays.

One of the days I'm meeting a friend from university and we're going to Killerton House near Exeter but that's all we've got planned.

Any ideas welcome, good places to eat, something a bit different maybe. Thanks.

We also loved Lyme Regis museum, and it’s located in such an interesting building

Well, the OP wasn’t asking for days out, just things to do.

All ideas welcome. Some great suggestions here, and thanks everyone.

If you're from Hull you will find the public transport in that area painful so don't over schedule yourselves. As others have said the donkey sanctuary is nice. Beer. The mini trams. Sidmouth is nice for a day out too. Charmouth heritage centre was really interesting if you like fossils.

I'm liking these ideas. Donkey sanctuary sounds great.

There are lovely walks along the coast from the donkey sanctuary, and it has a very good cafe too.

I totally recommend fossil hunting at Charmouth - check out the times of the tides so you can make the most of it. Incredibly atmospheric and in an hour we found 4 fossils. There is also a free museum - it’s only small but totally fascinating.

Beer caves, guided tour. Especially if it is hot!

Try to avoid falling off the Cobb into the arms of handsome naval officers…..

How about lunch at the Hive Beach Cafe?

The donkey sanctuary has a fab cafe and then you can stroll through the donks. Castle Drogo may be nearish but not sure.

Charmouth museum on the beach is good for a little potter round.

Perrygreen · 30/05/2026 18:56

Charmouth organised fossil hunt. They have the tools and can help you spot the best rocks.

Beer Quarry caves.

There’s a sauna on the beach at Bridport.

Bicton Park is nice, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to get there without a car.

I love mooching round all the little independent shops in both Lyme and Sidmouth.

If you want a fancy meal you could go to The Pig at Combe. We also like the Drewe Arms in Broadhembury, but that's the other side of Honiton so might be a bit far out for you.
