What goes with sandwiches

House is boiling so not cooking was going to make a mix of sandwiches for tea but wondered what people have as a side to make it more of a meal. We've had a lot of salad over the last few days so looking for something different any ideas

Sandwiches need a crunchy side. Coleslaw, crunchy veg sticks like carrots or raw pepper or cucumber, Asian cucumber type salad, crisps of any description, chips, pickled onions…

I think crisps sounds good then might do a fruit platter to for after really dont fancy warm food right now. Thanks

Im going the 'stuff in bread rolls' route as well at the moment, really CBA with food prep.
I always have a side of raw pepper sticks , me and the dog both agree this is the best.

When it's hot we tend to get a load of things out of the fridge and do a DIY meal. So rather than making sarnies and chopping veg or whatever in advance, everything goes on the table and you make up your own plate. So in the fridge we'll have various veg sticks (pre-cut if I've got round to it), a leafy green of some sort, a cheese or two, few different cured meats, falafels, coleslaw, various spreads (hummus, cream cheese, boursin), pickles...whatever you like really, sometimes there's pork pies, crisps, quiche etc. Could have chopped apple, pickled onions etc or grapes, make it more of a ploughman's. Mix it up. Then have options of bread or wraps or forgo the carbs and have more of a salad. Means no two meals are the same and makes meals more of an event. Tend to stay at the table way longer than when everyone has their own individual plate. Keep it all in tupperware/easy to grab containers so it's easy to set out and put away. Only downside is you tend to use more cutlery/chopping boards etc than if one person is cooking and it's going straight onto the plates. But small price to pay for an enjoyable, sociable mealtime.

Potato salad, bean salad, cubed cheese, (very large) gin and tonic.

Crisps.

Unless it's crisp sandwiches to begin with.

Arlanymor · 27/05/2026 17:34

Crisps and crudités. And a glass of Picpoul de Pinet with a coupe of ice cubes.

Beetroot

I had this at lunch with the addition of potato salad 🙂

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2026 17:40

We’ve been having wraps rather than sandwiches this week.

Ive done chicken, eggs, cheese, veg sticks, chips, crisps, coleslaw, dips.

Not all at once but varied it daily.

but always meat and wraps.
cheese
a potato side
veg/salad sides

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2026 17:40

And yes to beetroot.

move eaten a whole jar so far this week 🫣🤣

BaronessBomburst · 27/05/2026 17:51

A glass of cremant. And crisps.

DilemmaDelilah · 27/05/2026 18:04

A cup of tea

WonderingWanda · 27/05/2026 18:08

Hummus and crudités. Pork pies / scotch eggs. Pickles, you could just go the full ploughman's route and not even make a sandwich, just serve hunks of bread.

TinyMouseTheatre · 27/05/2026 20:24

A cup of tea sounds good but Crémant sounds even better! Also I don’t think that a whole jar of beetroot on one day is excessive? Actually I think I may have a beetroot problem…Grin

And I’ve also gone done the “disassembled sandwich” too this week Smile
