Tell me about sertraline and your weight

I’ve been on 50mg for a couple of years and am thinking of coming off now. Coincidentally, I’ve also found it hard to shift weight in those two years.

Did coming off sertraline change anything about your weight?

Or did you notice that going on it increased your weight?

(im not coming off because of this fyi, just because I want to see if I actually need it as, for me, going on it coincided with needing to go on HRT)

Yes. I started it in 2021 for postnatal anxiety and put on about 3 stone, which I haven’t been able to lose.

This is what I suspect!

Hi ShellSong. My DD is 31 yrs old and has severe learning difficulties.

She was originally put on 100mg Sertraline last October and gained 1.5 stone in 7 weeks 😱. (She was previously 9.5 stone and went up to 11 st. She is roughly 5'6" - 5' 7").

We got it reduced to 50mg as 100mg wasn't suiting her and then had her taken off it altogether 7 weeks ago.

I would say she has lost a tiny bit but she is due to start taking a very small dose of Respiridone very soon which also is renowned for causing weight gain so doubt we will see any significant changes for a while although have agreed with the psychiatrist that we will take her off that too should she start gaining more as added weight is dangerous for her other conditions. ☹️

Really hope your weight settles to something you feel happier with soon as I know how miserable it can make you feel.

I was on sertraline for probably 2 years. I didn’t notice anything about my weight. My weight didn’t fluctuate at all going on or coming off, but I’m someone who is a pretty stable weight. I don’t go up or down really.

What did make a difference though was stopping drinking, which I was doing to compensate for how much I was struggling. I gave up drinking and lost about 10kg, but that was well after I came off sertraline.

No change at all to my weight even though it did impact my energy. I slept very well on it but was often tired when I woke. That pay off was absolutely worth it for me when I was taking it.

mynameiscalypso · 27/05/2026 10:37

No impact on my weight. I lost a substantial amount of weight while on them actually but that’s because I was eating less and was more active as I could leave the house finally.

TurboGirl2 · 27/05/2026 11:58

i put on around 3 stone, have been on it twice. Came off around 2 months ago this time and still struggling to lose any.

ShellSong · 28/05/2026 06:42

Thanks all

@JadeSeahorsehope things get better for your daughter soon x

I had no energy to exercise and put on 2 stones.

JamNittyGritty · 28/05/2026 06:51

I have been on it for nearly a year, have gained only a few pounds but previously could tweak my diet to drop a few pounds of if I needed too and have been trying to do that but it won’t shift. However also 54 so age / menopause probably more to blame than Sertraline.

DamnBuster · 28/05/2026 06:55

My friend who went on it a couple of years ago put on two stone and is now more depressed than she was to begin with directly because of the weight.

Freysimo · 28/05/2026 06:59

My friend in her 70s has been on Sertraline for 4 years. She hasn't put any weight on and says she feels great on it. However, I've noticed her memory has got much worse, which she puts down to her age, but I think it's the drug.

Mummadeze · 28/05/2026 07:11

My DD is on 100mg and has piled on weight. It is really worrying me. She won’t exercise, am trying to find a way to change this.

TheLilacFinch · 28/05/2026 07:19

I was on 50mg and put on about a stone, couldn’t shift it til I came off it.

Same here, 50m for 2 years. Was always slim, about 8.5 to 9 stone. Ballooned to just over 11.5 stone in the 2 years, face all bloated and ultimately made me even more depressed.

It’s taken me 2.5years to lose the weight, still have another half stone to go and I will never go near it again.

FoodYUMyum · 28/05/2026 11:02

Holy moly.

The penny has dropped.

2 years and 4 stone gain. Assumed it was just a ‘me’ thing. Wow.
