Impulsively booked a holiday

Whataday247 · 26/05/2026 15:01

had a bit to drink last night and impulsivity booked a holiday for In a couple of weeks time. I paid on credit card. Is there any way I can get a refund. I feel sick at what I’ve done

How much money are we talking here? How long will it take you to pay off your card?

Do you have the spending money for if you do go? I’d talk to your employer, see if there is any way to get the time off and go if you can, since you can’t get the money back. Maybe message some friends and see if anyone can come along but travelling alone can be fun and relaxing. The issue is getting time off work.

JugglingMyNuts · 26/05/2026 17:09

OP are you listening? Phone the company and ask if there is a 24 hours cancellation period or how much to change dates if not.

You are focusing on the doom scenario not on what is sensible to do.

cloudysky75 · 26/05/2026 17:11

Phone the company!

Whataday247 · 26/05/2026 17:13

Thanks everyone one for advice. So I called the company who said they wouldn’t refund. I’m thinking of going it might be good for
me. I’ve booked for 2 weeks, I can have 1 week off work so im thinking of booking an earlier flight back seperately

You need to call the company and see if there's a way of cancelling the holiday. You won't know until you try. Do you know for absolute certain that you won't be able to get the leave from work? If you can't cancel the holiday and you can't get the time off work, then you need to find out how much it would cost for the holiday to be transferred into someone else's name or if you could change the dates, and go at a different time. You could then advertise the holiday for sale.

If all else fails, then you will have to chalk it up to a very expensive mistake and pay the holiday off your credit card.

Maddy70 · 26/05/2026 17:16

You have a "cooling off " period with most online bookings Google it for your airline/credit card etc

Lomonald · 26/05/2026 17:18

Whataday247 · 26/05/2026 15:39

I can’t get the time off work and it was quite expensive and I don’t want to go alone. Im
not going to be able to get a refund am I. I just don’t know where to start

There must be a cooling off period or is it because it is so soon ?

That’s sounds like a good compromise if you can’t get the time off. Have you asked for leave for two weeks and it’s been declined? Is it a package type holiday?

I’m going through a really bad time at the minute. Met friends and had a glass of wine. Carried
on drinking and thought this would cheer me up, it’s actually made me feel 10 x worse

Is it Registered with ABTA? You should get a refund, or try the credit card company

Did you ask how much to move the dates?

That won’t work! Best you could hope for is to move it to a time you could take the leave but may have to pay a fee. If you cancel the airline will refund taxes but that will be a relatively small amount.

Iheartmysmart · 26/05/2026 17:26

Oh dear @Whataday247 you’re not the first to make a bad decision when drunk, or the last. If it helps, my downstairs neighbour got very drunk one night and ordered a pair of flip flops shaped like a fish and a live micro pig! We spend a few days worrying about where to keep the pig until her refund was confirmed. The flip flops arrived and were hideous.

Enjoy your holiday.

Stoicandhappy · 26/05/2026 17:30

Do it! Sounds like it could be great for you. I go on holiday on my own at least once a year. It’s great being able to just suit yourself.

Take a book everywhere and if you feel awkward, just pretend you’re a secret spy/agent or something, there to observe someone. 😍

Go and enjoy yourself! I did this last week, wasn’t drunk but was emotional and booked for the next day. Then had anxiety for 24 hours right up until the flight departure but went and had the greatest time of my life.

Sounds brilliant. I bet you'll have a fantastic time. If you're happy to give a vague indication of where it is people will have suggestions of places to go too

InfoSecInTheCity · 26/05/2026 17:47

I’ve had some great holidays by myself, take a bit of time to see what’s in the area and what you’d like to do and think about safety/lone traveller stuff like having a small waterproof pouch for your phone and room card because there’s no one to leave it with on the side of the pool but otherwise just plan for some downtime and an opportunity to get away from everything for a little while.

OxRug · 26/05/2026 17:49

Where are you going? Maybe we can help with tips if anyone has been.

Ask your boss for the full 2 weeks

Whataday247 · 26/05/2026 17:51

Thank you so much for all the replies. It is only
to Majorca but hotel looks beautiful. I just feel
really emotionally about it.

I really hope it turns into a life changing trip for you, OP! Drunken you was trying to tell you something: you need a break. Try to go for the 2 weeks. Make up an emergency and say you need 2 weeks’ annual leave last minute. Do anything you can to get the time off to enjoy the full 2 weeks. Best of luck and keep us posted 😊

option 1, go to your manager with cap in hand and say you made a mistake (if they are approachable you could mention the drunk booking and ask if there is any way you could have the full time off)

option 2, see how much it is to move dates to a time you can get time off

option 3, go for the week you can but can you change flights?

Could you take the second week unpaid or would the loss work out about the same? Hope you have fun either way!

Jellox · 26/05/2026 18:13

Sorry I’ve not read the other replies but could you ask to change the date to later on in the year or next year?

It might give you a few more months to save up and get time off work.

MegJoBethandAmytoo · 26/05/2026 19:24

I think it really sounds like you need a break. Do go for a week at least, two if you can persuade your manager. It could turn out to be the best thing for you
