I really just can't cope with the heat

I had a nap Sunday and yesterday. I slept for 10 hrs last night. I've only been up two hrs today and pretty much woke up with a headache. I drank plenty yesterday. I put electrolytes in my water this morning to see if it helps and I've already had a cup of tea and drank around 1.5l water today. My living room is 23 degrees and feels cool in comparison to the rest of the house. I don't feel hot in here yet I still feel like crap overall.

I'm autistic and on ssris which I suspect is why I don't cope with the heat. It's half term so at least I can stay at home and out of the sun/worst of the heat.

People will say we sometimes moan too much about the hot weather, but it's literally so difficult for some of us. How do others manage?

I might bring a fan in from the garage but the noise gets on my nerves after a while 😅

Cool flannels fans ice. Tepid showers wet hair if you can bear it wet socks
last day today for a while

SoScarletItWas · 26/05/2026 12:29

You’re not helping yourself by using the fan you’ve got. Put some music or white noise on to try and zone out the noise.

Decamp to the living room as it’s your coolest option. I’ve done the same - laptop, fan, I’m working from the coffee table today! Everywhere else is too warm or stuffy.

Tonight, as soon as the sun is off your house and the air is cooler, open all the doors and windows to try and get cool air upstairs. I didn’t shut downstairs til midnight and I opened it again at 430am when I woke up for a wee and then shut doors and curtains by 8am - I’m trying to ‘reset’ the house to as cool as possible before the day heats up.

Get a tea towel and run it under cold water. Then ring it out and put it around your neck or on your legs.
Order a cooling scarf from Amazon.
Sorry the heat is grim.

Juliadiesalone · 26/05/2026 12:34

Maybe you’re ill? 23 isn’t hot. And your symptoms are more in line with illness than heat exhaustion if you don’t even feel hot!

Trumptontown · 26/05/2026 12:35

I don’t know but I feel you OP. I’m on two stimulants for ADHD, an SSRI and an antipsychotic and they all make me sweat like mad 😭

bumptybum · 26/05/2026 12:37

Don’t move around much. I am used to hot climates and I notice that a lot of people who find the heat difficult end up fidgeting and fretting and tossing and turning. ESP in bed. This just exacerbates the problem.

look at hot climate behaviour. Walk slower stop frenetic movements. Stay still. Stay indoors. Calm yourself. It genuinely keeps you cooler. You sort of merge in with the heat more than fight it and end up in a sweaty muck as much

RudolphTheReindeer · 26/05/2026 12:39

No it's defo the heat. I can guarantee I'll be fine tomorrow when it cools down. I do keep the windows shut during the day and open in the evening once outside is cooler than inside. Some are left open all night. Yes I have a cooling towel! I'd forgotten about it, I shall dig it out.

I'm on 54 methliphenadate and keep feeling like I'm going to faint in this heat .
It's really not a nice feeling

Tinytwinle · 26/05/2026 12:59

Bring on winter.

Whosthetabbynow · 26/05/2026 13:04

I loathe this weather. It’s hotter than ever here today. I’m also on SSRI. I’ve cleaned the bathroom, done three loads of washing. Put it out in the garden. Cleared out the coat cupboard because an electrician was coming. Dealt with him. Got the limescale off the kitchen tap. Laying on the bed now with a fan blowing on me. Hurry up October

Yellowpapersun · 26/05/2026 13:09

I'm in the NW so not London/SE heat but it was 33° yesterday. I don't like sitting in the sun so I manage to keep cool inside because we have ceiling fans in the living room and bedroom and they are so much better than ordinary fans.
The only thing I hate is that the humidity sets off my sinus problems. I have a headache, sore face and my top teeth are aching. I know I'll feel fine again as soon as the temp and humidity drop.

I've soaked a tea towel, rung it out and kept it in the fridge.
I sympathise I have health issues and yesterday had migraine from hell.
It's 38 in my kitchen lol. 27 upstairs in my bedroom with big fan on.

Marvellousmeadows · 26/05/2026 13:16

Put your feet in a cold bowl of water.

Berlinlover · 26/05/2026 13:51

I’m the same. I had chemo a few days ago and am losing my mind.

Marvellousmeadows · 26/05/2026 13:16

Put your feet in a cold bowl of water.

@Marvellousmeadows Get some cooking towels from Amazon. Or do the tea towel trick. Run it under a cold tap and drape it around your neck or legs.
the cooling towels are miraculous.

I hope you get some relief soon.

Vates · 26/05/2026 14:35

I am also really struggling, two fans on right now. I agree with the having wet hair if you can tolerate it. I had a lukewarm shower and washed my hair and felt a bit cooler. It says it is 29.2 in my bedroom but feels hotter!

Calling · 26/05/2026 15:05

The heat is really p---g me off now! I can't even take a shower, because the bathroom is so warm; it faces south.
We can only cope in one room, because of the fan- so glad that we bought a decent one last year from J Lewis. Not wearing a lot of clothes (!)
Can only really go outside early in the day and in the evening, so are stuck indoors.

WillowGrove · 26/05/2026 15:14

We bought a portable air con. We have hayfever, asthma, and eczema in this house so we suffer in the hot weather. We tried all the suggestions but air con is the only thing that really helps us.

Calling · 26/05/2026 17:10

CLOUDS! I have never been glad to see them before.
