Elephants are the only mammals with four forward facing knees.

People who want to see a sloth swim should watch Planet Earth 2 as there is absolutely epic footage of a pygmy sloth swimming to find a mate in (I think) Panama.

I love them - they are such wonderful animals. They have a whole ecosystem in their fur - look up ‘sloth moth’ and all the other wonderful things which live on them. They are genuinely so odd. Whenever I think about it, I feel happy that I live in a world where there are sloths.

i hadn’t seen that before, thanks!

it sort of looks as though they do, but the front ‘knees’ are their wrist joints.

That every time you breathe, you exhale 25 sextillion molecules of oxygen - so many that with a day’s breathing you will in all likelihood inhale at least one molecule from the breaths of every person that has ever lived. And every person who lives from now until the sun burns out will from time to time breathe in a bit of you. At the atomic level we are in a sense eternal.

the above is from the book The Body by Bill Bryson, I just find this fact fascinating and oddly comforting.

Forget -me-know flowers have yellow centres, but when a bee has visited it, it fades to pale yellow/white so as to communicate that there's no point going to that flower; the pollen has already been taken.

I happened to have taken a couple of photos of my forget-me-nots this weekend and checked them after reading this lovely fact and they are yellow and white centered flowers!

Rats grind their teeth and push their eyeballs out of their head when they're happy it's called bruxxing and boggling.
If a bee stings you and you are calm and patient it will unscrew its sting from you and fly off alive.
Male and female centipedes don't meet in the wild, the male leaves his sperm sac on the ground for a female to come across and use.

Gosh I've just googled. These are one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen.

Those foal slippers are rubbery and gross. I once lived on a stud farm and sometimes had to grapple with the things while assisting a mare during foaling. You pull the feet as she pushes.

Weasels are about the size of a pencil ( I always imagined them ferret size)

A female foetus will develop all the eggs in her
ovaries before birth, so half the genetic material for a child develops whilst their grandmother carries the mother!

I can assure you they're not that thin! They are a lot smaller than a stoat though. We used to have weasels in our garden when I was a kid. Shame you rarely see them now. 😢

There used to be a species of goat on an island in the Mediterranean that was cold blooded.

I recommend watching the whole series, we did when the kids were tiny when it first came out. I have recently rewatched it with them as teenagers, and they have loved it both times!

All musk ox in Alaska trace their genetics back to 34 that were imported into the US from Greenland in 1930.
