Sting rays can recognise people's heartbeats, even if they have not been in the same area for years. If they trust the person they will go closer and are happy to be patted on their backs.

When a bee stings you it's like a barbed harpoon that gets stuck on your skin, when it pulls away, it's digestive tract stays put in the stinger, ending the bees life. Thus protecting the hive.
Selfless eh

Forget -me-know flowers have yellow centres, but when a bee has visited it, it fades to pale yellow/white so as to communicate that there's no point going to that flower; the pollen has already been taken.

A barnacle’s penis can be anywhere between 8 to 40 times its body length.

That's absolutely ridiculous.

Why make it an A and not a Bee?

😄😄😄👏

Rabbits
...purr (by grinding their teeth)
...cant vomit
...80% of females get womb cancer within five years, hence neutering is essential
... teeth grow 2-3mm a week, eating hay keeps them short
...do two different types of poo: the normal currant ones you know about and tiny squishy smelly dark grapey ones (called caecotrophs) that you shouldn't see as the rabbit eats them. Bit like cows PP mentioned, this is how rabbits get the nutrients from their diet

Badgers invented underfloor heating.

See, I totally see this. Badger’s pad in The Wind in the Willows is so cosy…

Horses can't vomit.

Wish I was a horse; I hate being sick!

Wish I was a horse; I hate being sick!

It’s a potentially fatal problem for them if they eat something that’s bad for them though.

Otters have a little pocket that they keep a favourite rock in and then they use the rock to open shellfish 🦪

Not only can sloths swim, but they are very good swimmers. Faster in water than on land! They only poo once a week, they come down the trees to poo and risk death when they do. Also they have square poos. I love sloths! I did a feeding experience and got to feed and stroke one. Felt a bit like a border terrier that hadn’t been groomed for ages 😆

Sloths don't have square poos. Are you confusing them with wombats??

Oh I see. Well I wouldn't want that.

It goes to show that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Nothing to add but I love this thread!

You'd hate dying from colic even more!

Another horse fact- at gallop, their strides and breathing are linked with every stride being a breath.

And they walk on their fingertips!

Stroking a cat and listening to its purring lowers blood pressure and reduces your heart rate. Particularly beneficial for people who have had cardiac surgery.

Myoldbear · 26/05/2026 10:20

Yes, so I have gathered from Errol.
Perhaps the ability to vomit is a blessing after all!

Myoldbear · 26/05/2026 10:21

Sorry, that is to @Pansypots

A cloud weighs around a million tonnes. A cloud typically has a volume of around 1km3 and a density of around 1.003kg per m3 – that's a density that’s around 0.4 per cent lower than the air surrounding it (this is how they are able to float).
Leftover pasta has extra health benefits. That's because it contains more resistant starch than fresh pasta, thanks to the effect of cooking and cooling on the pasta starch's structure. Resistant starch has been linked to improved blood sugar control and better gut health.
All halibut are male until they reach 45 inches, then they change to female.

@MoonWoman69 "You can't hum if you are holding your nose" - how many of us have just tried that!

YoBetty · 26/05/2026 11:13

Female seahorses pass the eggs to the male as soon as they have been fertilised, they then bugger off and leave him to it. He keeps the eggs in a kangaroo-like pouch on his chest, incubates them and then gives birth to baby seahorses.
