You know what anything will feel like when you imagine touching it with tip of your tongue.

Humans are the only species with a chin and a hyoid bone

Stroking a cat and listening to its purring lowers blood pressure and reduces your heart rate. Particularly beneficial for people who have had cardiac surgery.

Yes, cats don't always purr when they're happy, they also purr to relax themselves which is why some cats purr at the vet's!

If a cow has male/female twins the female will be very unlikely to be able to breed. They are called Freemartins.

BruceAndNosh · 26/05/2026 17:12

A tawny owl does not go t-wit t-woo. It either goes t-wit OR t-woo, depending on whether it's female or male. The t-wit t-woo you hear is a duet

The spider is the Goliath bird eater, 175g, 30 leg span
the monkey is the Pygmy marmoset - 100-150g, 16cm body

However according to google, the monkey would win in a fight 🤷‍♀️

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 26/05/2026 20:56

I have a Goliath Bird Eater. He’s a massive doofus and would run screaming from a small monkey.

Koulibiak · 26/05/2026 21:07

You could swim in the blood vessels of a blue whale, they are that big. A blue whale tongue weighs more than an elephant.

Softly staring in your dog’s eyes releases oxytocin, reduces blood pressure and cortisol (stress hormone).

A group of penguins is called a waddle.

Otters have a little pocket that they keep a favourite rock in and then they use the rock to open shellfish 🦪

Adorable

Sharks are so old that they evolved before trees and are less genetically complex
They evolved before the North Star came into being
They evolved before fire (not humans mastering fire, the existence of fire, which can only exist in a certain concentration of oxygen, and sharks evolved before the Earth’s atmosphere reached that concentration)
In fact Earth is the only place in the entire universe where fire exists (AFAWCS).

Adorable

Isn’t it, and when they sleep they hold hands so they don’t drift apart. Love otters x

MerelyPlaying · 26/05/2026 21:52

Tapirs have a prehensile penis. They can curl it round things and even scratch themselves with it.

I thought an ‘otter’s pocket’ was something else entirely …

We have otters near us, I quite often see them near the loch shore holding paws while floating, an elderly gentleman told me the do it make sure they stay together so the currents don’t separate them.

I'm going to disagree. One goes 'Keeee-whik' and the other answers 'Hooooo'.

That's my favourite party trick with my Beaver Scouts (apart from lighting a fire with a battery). I ask them what noise a tawny owl makes. If they answer "twit too!" I reply "no..." And then play the respective calls on Xeno Canto.

An elderly ornithologist once said to me "my dear, it's easy to remember which sex of tawny owl makes which call. Mrs Owl calls her husband what many other women call theirs - twit."

People who want to see a sloth swim should watch Planet Earth 2 as there is absolutely epic footage of a pygmy sloth swimming to find a mate in (I think) Panama.

I love them - they are such wonderful animals. They have a whole ecosystem in their fur - look up ‘sloth moth’ and all the other wonderful things which live on them. They are genuinely so odd. Whenever I think about it, I feel happy that I live in a world where there are sloths.

LasVegass · 26/05/2026 22:16

Hares don’t have vocal cords

Forget -me-know flowers have yellow centres, but when a bee has visited it, it fades to pale yellow/white so as to communicate that there's no point going to that flower; the pollen has already been taken.

Wow! I just learned this week that horse chestnut trees are the same. The yellow centre of the blossoms turn pink!

MyHorseAndMe · 26/05/2026 15:51

Horses can only breath through their noses (not their mouths)

They are born with little tentacles on their hooves, that dry off and drop off within 24hrs following birth, to stop them damaging the mothers birth canal. Google fairy slippers or fairy fingers in horses.

Gosh I've just googled. These are one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen.

A gorilla's penis is between 2 and 6 cm erect. They have the smallest penis of all the great apes due to the way they mate. The alpha male of the group has sex with all the females so I guess he doesn't need to show off.

Not true. <Makes stupid joke about ex>

They’re actually really cute to see in a new born foal and they disappear quite quickly.
