Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

I have a friend like that as well.

They may have tried it, but have they tried Glycolic acid? It’s about £7.99 on Amazon or I know Primark do a cheap one. It removes dead skin and bacteria . I’ve used it on my under arms a few times a week and really noticed a difference.

Also, again, they may have done this, but certain foods can be triggers. I’ve known someone through work who would smell of garlic for a few days if they ate it. It’s like it comes through the sweat. A food diary could help

It would have been normal before showers were invented. Arms and legs don't get smelly in the heat. Armpits feet and bottoms do.

But showers have been invented. Why would you just not have a shower rather than rub yourself with flannels?

This is like saying" Well people didn't have computers in the past so I refuse to answer my email. Instead, I will only respond to a carrier pigeon."

It is fine to shower weekly so long as you wash the smelly bits and face daily, and hands frequently.

Only if you are happy to be judged for stinking

BountifulPantry · 25/05/2026 15:54

I love showering. Such a nice part of the day.

I love putting on clean, freshly ironed and nice smelling clothes, perfume and deodorant. Love it! Such a privilege to be clean!

Of course some people see it as a chore to be avoided but for me it’s such an enjoyable part of self care.

I am only saying that a daily shower is not essential to smelling clean, I am not recommending that people stop showering and use a flannel. I much prefer a nice shower.

Chlorpool · 25/05/2026 15:55

Sunlight soap is really good for smelly clothes on the armpits and collars.

There's no excuse. I shower every morning and most evenings in summer.

There are plenty of what you call excuses.

Medical reasons, mental health issues etc

Stop being so judgemental and I say that as someone who has a ridiculously keen sense of smell so really suffers arounf people with BO and bad breath etc

I used to line manage someone like this and I had to speak to her as it was revolting 🤢

I used to work with a woman who can't have washed and she never changed her work clothes as she turned up day after day with the same stains. In the summer she made you want throw up but the all time record for me was a bloke in a different job who wore corduroy trousers and they were actually a light beige, they were almost oatmeal coloured but he wore them day after day and they gradually grew darker and darker and more and more waxy looking so us underlings, being evil, made a chart and dabbed it off for every day he didn't wash those dark brown honking trousers and he went 193 days wearing them without washing them once. He stunk too but they must have jumped into the washing machine themselves once they weighed five kilos. Stinky fucker!

No, they're not ineffective, they do what designed to do.
We sweat all over. Armpits included. The difference, as mentioned before, is the sweat gets trapped and bacteria grows. When we sweat on the face, arms, back, legs etc, it's whipped away by the air or by clothing.
So antiP under the arm stops the sweating and it therefore stops bacteria under the arms and stops the smell.

It's absolutely nothing to do with toxins. Our bodies get rid of toxins quite ok with our organs and antiP will have no effect on toxins whatsoever. You literally cannot sweat out toxins.

Fair enough.
As I said I don’t use them. They can be very bad for your skin and trigger cystic acne.

I think they don't notice/don't smell themselves! But a lot of people don't have good hygiene.

TBH I grew up without good hygiene being modelled, and it took me a while to understand that even if I could not smell myself in the morning, if you sweat onto dried-on sweat and dead skin, that is likely to smell. If you have fresh sweat on clean skin, it doesn't usually smell (at least, not as strongly). Sometimes I used to feel like it was pointless washing if I was going to get sweaty again, but the fresh sweat/clean skin combo is much better than sweating onto dirty skin, which will smell.

But I do also think that people have differently smelling sweat. My tops get a build up which doesn't even smell of sweat particularly, I don't know how to describe the smell, it's sort of like the stale carpet smell of communal hallways. This does not get washed away in the washing machine unless I wash my tops at 60C, so I save them up and do them in a batch with some towels every 3-4 washes so they don't get destroyed by washing at 60 every time.

However I don't have to do this for DH's tops or teenage DS's even though their BO is much stronger than mine. The washing machine removes their armpit smell perfectly fine. It's annoying TBH.

I also find that unless I wash under my arms with salycylic acid (found in a lot of face washes) the old sweat doesn't seem to get removed properly. I can get out of the shower after having washed and I am still smelly.

i buy a sweat remover which you spray on clothing before you wash them....works on my teen son's uniform

Never had cystic acne under my arms but if you are a sufferer then fine, you must be reacting to perfumes or perhaps the metals, there are other types around to try though.. they are designed for the skin and are not bad at all, however some people may react, just as they can react to any product in anything.

But please don't spout rubbish about toxins. Too much misinformation in the world, don't need people adding to it.

Yes, the other thing is to look for washing powders with enzymes. They're good at built up dirt too, but can't be washed too hot otherwise it stops the enzymes working.

Middletoleft · 25/05/2026 16:08

Thank god it's a BH.

There's someone(s) in my office whose feet honk when they wear sandals in hot weather. Hate to think what tomorrow will bring.

Dinggirl · 25/05/2026 16:11

scoobysnaxx · 25/05/2026 13:57

No I don’t change my sheets daily because I always get into them clean.

my point is, I wear clean clothes daily, because I am clean.

I would never not shower before bed, and put dirty pjs on and get into dirty sheets

this is what people who don’t shower before bed do. They get dirty and smelly throughout the day, and then get into bed in dirty sheets and dirty pjs? Unless they put clean sheets and clean pjs on, but dirty as they haven’t showered?

makes zero sense.

I feel the same way. I hate the thought of getting into bed dirty ..I much prefer to shower before bed and then have a "pits and bits" wash in the morning. However when the weather is hot like this I do shower in the morning too, though it dries out my skin

I recently bought Fussy organic deodorant (or whatever it claims to be!). Awful stuff, it doesn’t work at all. I persisted using it for a month as apparently it takes your body a while to get used to it. During that time I had to shower twice a day. In the end, I threw it away (together with the two expensive refills I’d bought) 🤦🏼‍♀️🙈 Back to using Mitchum.

I do think most bad smells are the result of laziness and people not wanting to “be rude” and tell their family/friends.

I've got along really well with Fussy, it doesn't stop me sweating, but to be honest, nothing else did either, I think I sweat a lot - so I've tried every deodorant on the market, and Mitchum and some other brands made my armpits really, really sore, but still didn't stop me sweating. Now, even after sweating, it never smells at all, even at the end of a long day, whatever prebiotics they use, really work on my skin, and it never makes my underarms sore either.

fancypantss · 25/05/2026 16:12

I hardly ever smell, nor does my mum but DH and DS are both more smelly. How much you smell is down to genetics, diet, how much water you drink, whether you have hairy pits (which trap sweat and bacteria) and hygiene. I don't have to wash everyday to not smell except if I'm exercising in heat.

I use Trust deodorant which was recommended on here and is brilliant, it doesn't clod pores as isn't antiperspirant.

AprilMizzel · 25/05/2026 16:15

Not sure what's going on but have heard modern clothing isn't helping.

It's much more synthetic cloth that can retain smells and release them when hot - so could be a washed top and clean body but smell coming on from retained smell.

DD2 a teen sweats a lot - but we trying the undertops with sweat pads in - and that seems to help - plus freebze on her tops and sunlight when it's around.

YANBU but someone will be along to make excuses like not everyone can afford soap 🙄

Yep, they will despite the fact I’ve smelt more BO on public transport/spaces in the UK than in Thailand or west Africa.

These places also have poverty, illness, disability etc

Many people in the Uk have an issue with personal hygiene. Think it’s okay not to shower daily and when they do it aren’t doing it well.

The amount of people who smell bad for any good reason other than that is a tiny minute proportion.

KellySeveride · 25/05/2026 16:17

I think the push to wash at 30 and everyone insisting they need to use non bio hasn’t helped.

I insist on bio washing powder (mostly when my DH notices one on offer and I’m like no-that’s non bio) and everything is washed at 60 on a 2 hour cycle. And no bloody fabric conditioner which does nothing for clothes but coat them in something that either eats the fabric or stops them from washing properly.

But yeah a lot of people seem to think showers aren’t necessary.

Smelly people are more obvious during a heatwave.
I work with a woman who doesn’t believe in antiperspirant. She’s a bit stinky by coffee break and full on unbearable by lunchtime.

I don't use antiperspirant, it's not good for your skin, and I fortunately don't sweat much. I do however use deodorant though, so I don't smell.

upinaballoon · 25/05/2026 16:21

Some people sweat far more than others. B.O. is not a nice smell but it never ever triggered a migraine in my head, unlike the appalling sprays which a few people would spray around at work, not at the loo, where you could dive in and breathe through your mouth for a few minutes, but around the bank of desks where other people worked and couldn't walk off. One prat felt the need to spray her bloody feet one work day and treated us all to the smell. I wish I could have given her my three-day migraine.

As far as I’m concerned you shower before you leave the house or you can fuck off

I'll fuck off down the garden and play with the bonfire, then.

If you are only going to shower once a day, then surely it’s better in the morning? Washing at night is fine but why wouldn’t you want to put clean clothes on a properly clean body?

It’s actually vile. Shower in the evening before bed, stick a load of deodorant on and make sure you’re in light sheets and light pyjamas. That’s all it takes

Or better still shower in the evening and the morning.
No one wants to go to bed with deodorant on.

I'm always amazed at MN how people start the day without a shower or at least a thorough armpit wash.
