Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

Of course not. The fear is the toxins will build up in your body.

What does that even mean? That sounds like a load of uneducated wank

I was going up to London on the tube on Friday. I was sitting and a guy was strap-hanging over me. He absolutely stunk of BO. His armpit was a couple of feet from my face and I tried to keep my head down trying to avoid the full effect of the stench. I was a nurse so have smelled the whole range of disgusting things in my time but this made me feel sick.

It’s absolutely pointless worrying about this stuff if you live in the real world - cars, public transport, pollution everywhere, all the shit we breathe in our lungs.

No I don’t change my sheets daily because I always get into them clean.

my point is, I wear clean clothes daily, because I am clean.

I would never not shower before bed, and put dirty pjs on and get into dirty sheets

this is what people who don’t shower before bed do. They get dirty and smelly throughout the day, and then get into bed in dirty sheets and dirty pjs? Unless they put clean sheets and clean pjs on, but dirty as they haven’t showered?

makes zero sense.

Thanks for clarifying. Your previous post could be read as though you did, and I know some (insane, imo) people do.

Maybe. It was a suggestion as to why some people don’t use them, not my opinion.

I don’t use them because they work by blocking your pores and a common side effect is blocked pores/ cysts and they can trigger acne and cystic acne.

They are also ineffective anyway. They redirect sweat away from your armpits etc but your body naturally releases the same amount of sweat from other areas to regulate its temperature.

The Eastern European labourers on the tube every morning mostly stink- of unwashed crotch and fag breath. They are definitely not washing regularly. Probably weekly yo build up that level of stink. There is a spectrum of unwashed on public transport. Also a lot of garlic breath. People who washed before a night shift really do not smell too bad. Homeless / leg ulcers is the worse smell. People generally are not washing enough though. There is an awful lot of hair that could be washed more.

From what I know when I had the privilege of working alongside some people from Eastern Europe, they worker harder than dogs. I would do crazy shifts like 7am to 11pm mon-friday, and my Eastern European companions would be going off to another night shift or simply working 7 days a week nonstop. All whilst sharing one flat in poor living conditions. They literally lived to work. I was a slob by comparison. I don't recall anyone smelling offensive. A few old geezers did though, they were divorced and past retirement and if anything, it engendered a sense of wishing they could be cared for better. But a lot of people are functioning as autonomous beings

Acne on your face or under your arms?

The people I have known who smell, who aren’t homeless people or similar, do have genuine reasons for it. Some people just smell more strongly than others. It’s normal human variance. If someone looks clean and well presented but smells, it’s not likely to be because they are smelly bastards who can’t be arsed washing is it? They’ve made an effort with everything else, so to conclude they decided, mysteriously, just to skip the washing bit, is not a reasonable conclusion to make.

haha...just like the well groomed ladies who after using the toilet are more interested in doing their hair and makeup then washing their hands

I’m from Irish builder stock which is the 1980s equivalent of the Eastern European 😆

my dad smelt a lot. He would come off the site get home at 7pm, lay on the sofa in his dirty clothes and fall asleep, waking at 5am to go back to work.

looking back, he was overwhelmed and stuck in a rut of exhaustion. As always when you’re overwhelmed and exhausted the problems seemed to stack up, and simple things became a tangle of problems go unravel.

i have friends whose husbands are tradies who change out of their work clothes in the garage and go straight for a shower after work, then do the kids dinner and run them
go their dance classes. I don’t know why, but my dad’s post work life looked very, very different so I understand why some “dirty workers” are the same.

Sweating is one of the body’s ways of letting out toxins. Antiperspirants work by blocking the pores and therefore preventing the toxins from being expelled. It’s not hard to work out why someone would not want to do that.

Toxins?! You're talking twaddle, pure twaddle.

It literally is the body cooling. The difference under the arm is the moisture is trapped and bacteria begins to grow.
This is why need to use better things to control the stink. Or wash, often.

I wonder if it’s those “natural” deodorants like Wild, Bloom etc., that have become popular in the last couple of years. I tried Wild briefly about a year ago, but quickly realised it doesn’t work or at least not for very long / by lunchtime it was like I hadn’t put it on. Maybe that explains some of it - people put them on and don’t realise they’re not very effective. I went straight back to my usual mainstream brand after that! 🙂

Edited

I tried the wild one as well and I was smelly too half way my work day yikes, had to change for Sure/dove

I lived in a very hot and humid country in SE Asia when I was younger, which made me realise how filthy a lot of people must be in the UK, because even on hot crowded buses, at the end of a working day, when everybody would have one arm up hanging onto the rails/hand hold things, it would be really, really rare to smell anybody. You'd still smell deodorant or talc (they are still very fond of talc in SE Asia, they have cooling ones which I wish I could buy here when its hot, but maybe they are really bad for you like the talcs that caused cancer that used to be on sale here?). Yet in this country, which is never nearly as warm or humid, even on weekends like this, yet a lot of people are just stinking. Grim.

I wonder if the people in SE Asia are mostly Hindu. A friend told me that Hindus think we westerners smell of sour milk.
Dd has a friend who is vegan and she always smells really fresh.

I’ve noticed a rise in this since Covid. I think some people (mostly men) just stopped bothering. I also think some people treat communal space as if it’s just theirs. Like playing phones out loud. Eating smelly food and being stinking dirty. I also wonder if some men get off on it, a primitive attempt to dominate? My train honks of BO and I’m sure they’re not all impoverished or night workers.

Tell us you just can’t stand men without telling us you just can’t stand men 🙄

Enjoyout · 25/05/2026 15:38

I recently bought Fussy organic deodorant (or whatever it claims to be!). Awful stuff, it doesn’t work at all. I persisted using it for a month as apparently it takes your body a while to get used to it. During that time I had to shower twice a day. In the end, I threw it away (together with the two expensive refills I’d bought) 🤦🏼‍♀️🙈 Back to using Mitchum.

I do think most bad smells are the result of laziness and people not wanting to “be rude” and tell their family/friends.

Mydogisblackandwhite · 25/05/2026 15:38

My husband is a hgv driver and there is one driver that always smells funky, even on a Monday morning.... apparently no-one likes working working with him, stuck in a lorry with him for 8-10 hrs plus unloading 😷

tiramisugelato · 25/05/2026 11:53

Because some people genuinely believe it’s acceptable to go several days without cleaning themselves.

They’ll be on this thread shortly arguing about how it’s totally fine to only shower twice a week.

It is fine to shower weekly so long as you wash the smelly bits and face daily, and hands frequently.

Happyjoe · 25/05/2026 15:40

No, they're not ineffective, they do what designed to do.
We sweat all over. Armpits included. The difference, as mentioned before, is the sweat gets trapped and bacteria grows. When we sweat on the face, arms, back, legs etc, it's whipped away by the air or by clothing.
So antiP under the arm stops the sweating and it therefore stops bacteria under the arms and stops the smell.

It's absolutely nothing to do with toxins. Our bodies get rid of toxins quite ok with our organs and antiP will have no effect on toxins whatsoever. You literally cannot sweat out toxins.

With some people it can be hormonal, I have a friend who can literally be 5 minutes out of the shower and is already starting to smell. Friend is very self conscious and has tried all sorts, including through GP, but with limited effect, it’s particularly bad/ strong at certain times of the month. It is somewhat unpleasant but I know she can’t help it so don’t judge her for it or let it out me off being around her.

I have a friend like that as well.

It would have been normal before showers were invented. Arms and legs don't get smelly in the heat. Armpits feet and bottoms do.

A few years ago I made the mistake of taking my daughter to the Natural History Museum in the afternoon. There was a BO smell around the main hall but my god, when I went into the ladies loo 🤢. There were a group of women covered head to toe and smell followed them around . They had kids about so I’m surprised they didn’t say something - I know if I smelt that bad my daughter would have said something .

If you’re washing all the bits that smell daily you’re just as well jumping in the shower.

That is a good point, if you have daily access to a shower. If not, washing with a flannel is a good substitute.

YANBU but someone will be along to make excuses like not everyone can afford soap 🙄

I actually think it’s the “fashion” for shower gels and the move away from soap.

i don’t think shower gel properly cleans. If I use it I’m much stinkier more quickly than if I use soap.

in fact I think many products are designed to temporarily make us smell better, but not the cause so we use more.

I ran out of dog shampoo once so used our human version when he rolled in something. Now usually I don’t need to wash the dog- but after a couple of days he stank, so I washed him again. Next day, stinking. I was having to wash him near daily. Went out and got dog shampoo and bingo- smell gone and back to only needing to wash when he was muddy.
