Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

I feel the same way. I hate the thought of getting into bed dirty ..I much prefer to shower before bed and then have a "pits and bits" wash in the morning. However when the weather is hot like this I do shower in the morning too, though it dries out my skin

You can get cheap shower/ body washes that don't dry your skin and /or you can use body lotion after a shower.

What are you using to wash your bits?

Surely it's far easier to stand under the shower for 30 seconds than use a flannel at the sink?

I am always amazed on reading MN about showers, how mucky some people are.

We shower twice a day and sometimes 3 times if we've been exercising during the day and are going out/ seeing people before the bedtime shower.

Smelly people are more obvious during a heatwave.
I work with a woman who doesn’t believe in antiperspirant. She’s a bit stinky by coffee break and full on unbearable by lunchtime.

I used to work with a woman who claimed to be allergic to deodorant, the smell was unbearable. Surely if they was true you’d be going to the loo every hour to give your pits a good wash, not sit there stinking the place out!

Not sure what's going on but have heard modern clothing isn't helping.

It's much more synthetic cloth that can retain smells and release them when hot - so could be a washed top and clean body but smell coming on from retained smell.

DD2 a teen sweats a lot - but we trying the undertops with sweat pads in - and that seems to help - plus freebze on her tops and sunlight when it's around.

I use dettol laundry sanitiser
pour it on the armpits of anything smelly, then wash with bio powder and no fabric conditioner, add the dettol stuff to the wash too
if that doesn’t work in my experience it’s usually for the bin!

cleansun · 25/05/2026 16:46

DaffodilLill · 25/05/2026 16:35

Or better still shower in the evening and the morning.
No one wants to go to bed with deodorant on.

I'm always amazed at MN how people start the day without a shower or at least a thorough armpit wash.

I use an antiperspirant that’s applied at night, most works better if you do that

worldshottestmom · 25/05/2026 16:47

Ugh hard relate. Work with 2 people who are a couple, and they stench from them is unbearable. U n b e a r a b l e. The woman is very, very morbidly obese and I think that causes a lot of her BO, as she is never visibly dirty so I'm assuming she showers but my god the smell.

Her husband is just something else. He's really skinny, always visibly dirty and has terrible halitosis. There have been so many times I have had to turn away or simply leave the area around him because the smell is so offensive, and other people have as well.

I sympathise that there are certain people with genuine medical conditions but let's not shy away from the fact that some people just don't bother to make the effort not to reek constantly.

I hardly ever smell, nor does my mum but DH and DS are both more smelly. How much you smell is down to genetics, diet, how much water you drink, whether you have hairy pits (which trap sweat and bacteria) and hygiene. I don't have to wash everyday to not smell except if I'm exercising in heat.

I use Trust deodorant which was recommended on here and is brilliant, it doesn't clod pores as isn't antiperspirant.

Edited

Hairy pits don’t contribute to smell.

the hair wicks away sweat from the skin where the bacteria live, so doesn’t “trap bacteria”, and can reduce smell.

I'm a big lass, but far far smaller now than I used to be. I'd have been horrified if anyone had said I smelt!
You have to make an effort to keep clean.
My regime is shower with a little bit of Hibiscrub (any soap or shower gel makes my armpits and groin area absolutely stink!)
I never smell using Hibiscrub and a medicated talc free powder keeps my under boobs and creased areas fresh. I use Mitchum deodorant, occasionally Sure. I tried Pit Rock years ago and I reeked of BO, within a couple of hours, it's the only time I ever have. That went in the bin!
I aways use bio washing powder too. I wash two full loads of my clothes twice a week at 40°.
There is no excuse to wander round stinking.

My DH worked with a bloke who's wife wouldn't let him wear deodorant, as she didn't want another woman to be attracted to him (🙄) and he reeked!
My DH occasionally has that old man smell, it's awful. I've got him to get rid of polyester motorcycle under t shirts, which he's been wearing as t shirts and that's helped a bit. I've only ever smelt BO on him twice in 36 years and his sweat actually smells like sawdust!
I've got a really keen sense of smell, so I pick up on peoples body odours instantly and can smell mucky clothes a mile off! 🤮

Sweating is one of the body’s ways of letting out toxins. Antiperspirants work by blocking the pores and therefore preventing the toxins from being expelled. It’s not hard to work out why someone would not want to do that.

Trace amounts, maybe, but your liver and kidneys do the rest (99%.) And surely if sweating got rid of toxins it wouldn't just be your armpits doing it?

Of course not. The fear is the toxins will build up in your body.

The only reason toxins would build up in your body if it your liver and kidneys failed. But then you'd be up shit creek without a paddle.

Aluminium salts in antiperspirants are fine.

SapphireSeptember · 25/05/2026 17:13

Backedoffhackedoff · 25/05/2026 15:14

What does that even mean? That sounds like a load of uneducated wank

That's because it is!

Armpit sweat smells because of its composition, nothing to with toxins, and even before bacteria have had time to degrade it. Look up apocrine sweat glands.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 25/05/2026 17:26

It's grim isn't it and pure laziness. Unwashed clothes or no antiperspirant. I think there's some people using natural deodorants which don't work for everyone.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/05/2026 17:27

Not everyone works 9-5 though so it might not be their morning. Plus people are grim and don’t wash clothes properly either through poor education or not caring.

upinaballoon · 25/05/2026 16:21

Some people sweat far more than others. B.O. is not a nice smell but it never ever triggered a migraine in my head, unlike the appalling sprays which a few people would spray around at work, not at the loo, where you could dive in and breathe through your mouth for a few minutes, but around the bank of desks where other people worked and couldn't walk off. One prat felt the need to spray her bloody feet one work day and treated us all to the smell. I wish I could have given her my three-day migraine.

As a migraine sufferer myself I would rather risk giving someone a migraine than thinking my feet smell

5128gap · 25/05/2026 17:56

There's certainly more smelly people than there used to be. Even in the days when daily showers weren't as common, you only got the occasional person who smelled bad, and they were usually unkempt in other ways too. I think too much meat and processed food is partly responsible.

I was quoting someone else, banging on about toxins, and thought I'd try some of my logic on them. Grin

My armpit sweat often smells like tea, and occasionally gravy, among other things.

TriesNotToBeCynical · 25/05/2026 18:12

Yes, the unpleasantness or otherwise of armpits is very much context dependent.

Indeed. DH maintains if you are clean then your armpits do not smell. He generally does not smell, unless he has been to the gym. But that said, he runs cold. Even today he is wearing a tshirt, then a rugby shirt underneath a fleece.

I wash once or twice a day and my armpits smell like vinegar.

I had some friends who were into veganism/ raw food etc and tbf they stank!

Yeah you can still do that, the one I use doesn’t need reapplying in the morning so it’s handy really. Works great and no marks on clothes
I shower evening only

TY78910 · 25/05/2026 19:00

What about people who work nights and are just returning home?

Dinggirl · 25/05/2026 20:46

Anarchy99 · 25/05/2026 16:28

If you are only going to shower once a day, then surely it’s better in the morning? Washing at night is fine but why wouldn’t you want to put clean clothes on a properly clean body?

I hear what you're saying...I wish I could shower both times, but it dries out my skin despite using body lotion and I guess it's not very environmentally friendly!

but like today, for instance. It's 32 degrees where I am and I've slathered on the factor 50...I was a greasy sweaty mess before I had my shower 😄
I'll see how sweaty i am tomorrow morning...may well have another shower!

I do use all of that.
I don't know. I am well past the menopause and don't seem to sweat as much as I did when I was younger.
Today I am sweaty, and greasy from using factor 50...I can't imagine going to bed like that! So I've just had a lovely cool shower ...tomorrow morning I may well do the same!
but there are people on here who are very disapproving of showering twice a day due to it not being great for the environment. So I can't win really!

I think talking about the environmental impact is a bit crazy though! If the worst thing I do is shower twice in hot weather then my conscience is clear

Those people often have children, cars, fly abroad at least once a year, eat food with a hideous amount of food miles etc though. 🤷‍♀️
