Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

💯 re needing a proper bio 60 degree wash. I’ve noticed that with non bio as well and, like the natural deodorant, went straight back to bio!

Yes - we are all eczema prone so sometimes I wash at 60° with bio and follow up with a quick wash at 40° with non bio.

They may be Neuro Diverse with Sensory Needs

Edited

Or they may just be grubby or using ineffective deodorant.

Please don’t start blaming everything on neurodiversity. It’s insulting.

Oh- that's a good idea!

It's not hygiene in SE Asia usually. It's genes. Not joking.
Not only they have better skin structure that they wrinkle less, they also naturally smell less if at all. Absolutely winning!

I remember reading something about diet too. Westerns eat more meat and milk which makes us smell more apparently.

KSera · 25/05/2026 14:34

Do people not realise some people can’t use deodorant and in particular antiperspirant?

Yes and some people have sensory needs and cannot tolerate soap or the feel of water.
A little more understanding please!

Well aren't you helping the environment.

Given all the people on MN who fly all over the world, have children (not great for the environment) , sneer at non drivers and claim to wash their bedding four times a night, I think showering twice a day is fairly innocuous.

TipsyPeachSnake · 25/05/2026 14:48

Doesn’t a persons smell relate strongly to what you eat and drink. So meat, dairy, garlic, heavy spices, coffee etc. These smells definitely come out in a persons sweat.

Smelly people are more obvious during a heatwave.
I work with a woman who doesn’t believe in antiperspirant. She’s a bit stinky by coffee break and full on unbearable by lunchtime.

Doesn’t believe in antiperspirant?! Why are there so many nonsense people out there?

BeautySimplified · 25/05/2026 14:51

It’s worse if you’re in a confined area with some people that smell. I was on a flight last week and sat next to someone who had the worst body odour mixed with a wet dog smell, it was making me wretch. Thankfully the cabin crew found me a different seat.

We shower twice a day, once in the morning and once before bed, more often if it’s hot or we’ve been exercising. I have long hair and it’s washed most days because it feels grubby, surely people who shower or bathe once or twice a week must feel grimy?

Yes! Isn't having a child the equivalent of flying to new York every week or something, when it comes to environmental impact?

It's funny how precious people get over certain things isn't it? Have a bloody shower and stop stinking people!

MidnightMeltdown · 25/05/2026 14:54

It is grim, but you don’t get to dictate how often other people wash anymore than you get to dictate what other people wear. Yesterday I saw a few women with their arses literally spilling out of their overly short shorts. That was also grim!

Oh come on. There's ways around it. Wipes for example? Clean clothes? You know you're pretty much talking nonsense yes? There's not many people who have this issue that cannot find an alternative that works for them.

DirtyBird · 25/05/2026 14:54

Considering so many here say they only bathe twice a week because they never smell or they don't get sweaty it's not surprising there are so many smelly people around

SleeplessInWherever · 25/05/2026 14:58

I have hyperhidrosis, meaning that I sweat more all year round, so weather spells like this are a real nightmare.

The specialist deodorants etc don’t work for me and I can’t take the medication, the only remaining treatment available is gland removal.

I’ve changed clothes 3 times today already, and had 2 showers - that’s just to be comfortable enough to be in my own skin, in my own house. I’m not actually going anywhere.

If I did, you’d likely notice I was there, because I am literally unable to regulate my temperature or bodily response to it.

That’s not the case for everyone, sure, but it may well be for some of them. Maybe try being less judgmental.

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 25/05/2026 15:00

There was an elderly couple in the supermarket the other day and the man absolutely stank of wee. It was eye watering.

Clearly the poor old bloke was incontinent to at least some degree but I just couldn't fathom how someone from his own family hasn't mentioned it with a view to getting him some help. I can only imagine how their car/home smells when he smelled as badly as he did.

Aside from the smell, they both looked clean and tidy though.

tiramisugelato · 25/05/2026 11:53

Because some people genuinely believe it’s acceptable to go several days without cleaning themselves.

They’ll be on this thread shortly arguing about how it’s totally fine to only shower twice a week.

Grim. Especially in this heat.

I showered this morning but will definitely have another before bed. Very rare for me to shower twice on the same day!!

Sweating is one of the body’s ways of letting out toxins. Antiperspirants work by blocking the pores and therefore preventing the toxins from being expelled. It’s not hard to work out why someone would not want to do that.

He could have had a urostomy bag (part of a stoma).

Backedoffhackedoff · 25/05/2026 15:08

I always find this such a weird conversation but it does reveal quite a lot about the level of control and entitlement lots of people expect in life

other people exist. You have no control over them. They smell. You can stop them smelling. This is normal life. The level of anger at your inability to control other people is bizarre.

fwiw to add to the explanations that aren’t palatable I spend an inordinate amount of time in psychiatric hospitals and people in psychosis rarely shower or wear weather appropriate clothes so you know, those people

DontKillSteve · 25/05/2026 15:08

The Eastern European labourers on the tube every morning mostly stink- of unwashed crotch and fag breath. They are definitely not washing regularly. Probably weekly yo build up that level of stink. There is a spectrum of unwashed on public transport. Also a lot of garlic breath. People who washed before a night shift really do not smell too bad. Homeless / leg ulcers is the worse smell. People generally are not washing enough though. There is an awful lot of hair that could be washed more.

What do they think happens though? Are there examples of peoples armpits exploding?!

Of course not. The fear is the toxins will build up in your body.

And they increase sweat you start to need to use them. People who never use them don't actually smell as much.

I never use them. Only perfume.

Some of it is hormones. Teens can smell rank without doing much at all.

Unless that causes an absolutely horrendous stench of (multiple layers of old, dried in) wee, then I'm guessing no.
