Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

Im using a natural organic deodorant at the moment as I am pregnant and want to avoid chemicals. I absolutely stink. There’s a reason all the main brands use funky chemicals.

I can only apologise.

This is an "And Just Like That" ( sequel to SATC ) storyline. One of the characters uses a crystal as deodorant. 😂

I have never seen those threads regarding working adults showering once a week.

I'm 65 with three adult children. If course I've experienced stinky wet towels and clothing .

To add Henry VIII famously stank because he didn't was his legs or feet due to an ulcerated injury.

@placemats you must be blessed with a poor sense of smell. Most of us have sat in an office with a smelly colleague, sat next to a smelly passenger on public transport, etc.

Squirrelsnut · 25/05/2026 13:22

I'm just back from Sainsbury's which was busy and I didn't smell any BO on anyone. I very rarely do.
I shower daily without fail, but I can't say my life has been blighted by stinky people.

OP,
you do realise that for you it might be first thing in the morning but some ppl just finished night shift and are on the way home to have shower and sleep??

@teraculum29 do you realise that if you read the OP’s posts you can see that the person was on her way out shopping for the day.

TheChicDreamer · 25/05/2026 13:23

Coincidence, this thread. I was just saying to dh that while shopping in Aldi yesterday I noticed an overwhelming number of smelly people. Real, pungent greasy, body smell. Not so much BO. It was still relatively early and the weather was still quite cool so I don’t think it was due to the heat.

And may well pop into the shops before going home. Apparently the OP overheard a conversation that this one person was headed out to the shops 😐

Night shift workers do have a couple of hours to spare before they shower and get into bed.

Wamid · 25/05/2026 13:24

BerryTwister · 25/05/2026 13:11

@Wamid what did you say?!

The truth: They needed to wash their clothes and skin.

B0D · 25/05/2026 13:25

In primary school I remember two older teachers who would stand behind and lean over with their armpits close up to one’s head, to look at our work 😦
This was in the early 70’s and
they were from a different generation when baths were weekly

GeraldThePufferSponge · 25/05/2026 13:25

Sometimes there can be a genuine reason. I suffer from hyperhidrosis and sweat heavily literally just by walking across a room - I can soak a full t-shirt in 10 minutes.
I shower twice a day, wash my clothes constantly, use antiperspirant with 20% aluminium in it, take a lot of medication for it and am under a dermatology consultant. I am genuinely mortified on a daily basis by my condition and the stares and comments I get. I appreciate this is not every person who smells but there are a few of us struggling for genuine reasons 😔

My sense of smell is good. I used to work and live in London and without a doubt there's a bit of BO in hot weather but if a homeless person got on the tube, it stank to high heaven, regardless of the weather. That's not their fault though.

DinoDinoDinoDino · 25/05/2026 13:29

Because not everyone thinks they should shower every day, I always feel sick when I read those threads how many people think it’s ok to go out without a shower

@placemats for some strange reason you’re desperate to prove OP wrong. Protesting too much maybe…

OP said the person was chatting about a shopping trip she was going on. Having worked many many night shifts in my career, I think it’s extremely unlikely anyone would choose to go on a big shopping trip straight after a night shift. And if they really did have the energy to do that, and they smelled bad from working all night, then they should use some of that energy to have a shower first!

LetsMakeThisMomentLast · 25/05/2026 13:33

My in-laws always have a fusty smell, even though I know they shower regularly. They are in their eighties which I know causes hormonal changes, but two of DP’s much younger siblings have moved back in with them and they’re whiffy too. I’m pretty certain they don’t wash their clothes properly. Possibly too short a cycle, overstuffed machine drum or not enough detergent. Maybe all three! They dry their laundry in the garage, which is heated, in winter and any time I go in to lift something out of the spare freezer, the awful stink hits me up the face. So maybe there are people who don’t wash their laundry correctly as well as the usual sweaty Betty’s. Then they heat up and the smell is released on an unsuspecting public. I have a very sensitive sense of smell and find it an absolute sensory nightmare in busy shops with all the body/soap/perfume smells mingling into an unharmonious toxic pong

MolkosTeenageAngst · 25/05/2026 11:52

With some people it can be hormonal, I have a friend who can literally be 5 minutes out of the shower and is already starting to smell. Friend is very self conscious and has tried all sorts, including through GP, but with limited effect, it’s particularly bad/ strong at certain times of the month. It is somewhat unpleasant but I know she can’t help it so don’t judge her for it or let it out me off being around her.

And some people are just dirty bastards

I absolutely stank when I was freshly postpartum too (in the dead of winter).. even though I was showering as much as possible with a cluster feeding newborn. She’s 4 months now and it’s calmed down. I was smellier pregnant too.. I think it’s hormonal.

Daisymug · 25/05/2026 13:37

I think nylon and especially polyester has a lot to answer for. My DH wears them awful yellow polyester outfits, has to because of his job. Complete change of clothes everyday and I had to use bio washing powder and 60 degrees wash and I’m sure they still don’t get sweat out!
So any help to get sweat smell out of polyester clothes gratefully received.

scoobysnaxx · 25/05/2026 12:40

The dirty sods are the ones who don’t shower daily and shower in the morning only, meaning they think it’s acceptable and hygiene to work a full day, sweating and smelling, sitting on work toilets or public toilets and then go to bed in pjs and in their sheets and fester all night.

absolutely fucking rotten.

oh and then not change their sheets and pajamas daily and put the same now dirty pjs on for the next few nights!

grim in an understatement.

You change your sheets daily??

Fresh sweat doesn’t smell though. It’s only when it’s allowed to ferment that it becomes BO 🤷‍♀️

It's really hard. I do sympathise with people who have to wear polyester work uniforms. DS had to wear one at one point, and he was always washing them on 60 C and then drying in the sunshine. Can you dry in the sun?

I lived in a very hot and humid country in SE Asia when I was younger, which made me realise how filthy a lot of people must be in the UK, because even on hot crowded buses, at the end of a working day, when everybody would have one arm up hanging onto the rails/hand hold things, it would be really, really rare to smell anybody. You'd still smell deodorant or talc (they are still very fond of talc in SE Asia, they have cooling ones which I wish I could buy here when its hot, but maybe they are really bad for you like the talcs that caused cancer that used to be on sale here?). Yet in this country, which is never nearly as warm or humid, even on weekends like this, yet a lot of people are just stinking. Grim.

It's not hygiene in SE Asia usually. It's genes. Not joking.
Not only they have better skin structure that they wrinkle less, they also naturally smell less if at all. Absolutely winning!

LakieLady · 25/05/2026 13:50

I wonder if some people are showering/bathing less because of the increase in water meters and ever-increasing water charges?

My water charges (metered) are nearly £50 a month (Southern Water) and I live alone. I never run the washing machine until I have a full load, and have short showers, rather than the lovely 15-minute jobs I used to enjoy. I no longer run the tap to get the water cold for drinking, but fill a bottle and pop it in the fridge. I never water the garden, I only grow stuff that's happy in dry condtions and have learned to live with a yellow lawn for a good part of the year.

And that £50 may well go up after the next meter reading in July, as they only read it and work out your bill once a year. I sometimes wonder if next door's water goes through my meter on its way to their house...

ETA: Quelle surprise, Southern are the most expensive water company out of all the UK companies that deal with sewage as well as water:

Water company charges ranked

I suppose they've got to charge a lot to recoup all the fines they get for releasing untreated sewage into the rivers and sea. Bastards.

TwoBagsOfCompost · 25/05/2026 13:53

Just playing devils advocate, I was also quite smelly today early morning - I had already changed three very warm trains and had got off a 2 hr flight, all before 10 am. I had showered and had deodorant and clean clothes on and everything but it’s been very warm and I’ve been running about travelling for hours so I am fairly certain I was smelly towards the end of my journey… Could those smelly people also have been travelling?? Might be unlikely 🫣

What has worked great on my gym clothes (100% synthetic) as armpits always honked despite freshly out of the washing machine with bio wash, is spraying armpits with white vinegar, let it sit for 5-10 mins, then wash as you normally would. I also wash my gym stuff immediately after getting home, never let them sit in the laundry basket as it’s game over then.

scoobysnaxx · 25/05/2026 13:57

ruethewhirl · 25/05/2026 13:38

No I don’t change my sheets daily because I always get into them clean.

my point is, I wear clean clothes daily, because I am clean.

I would never not shower before bed, and put dirty pjs on and get into dirty sheets

this is what people who don’t shower before bed do. They get dirty and smelly throughout the day, and then get into bed in dirty sheets and dirty pjs? Unless they put clean sheets and clean pjs on, but dirty as they haven’t showered?

makes zero sense.

TrufflePigs · 25/05/2026 13:59

As far as I’m concerned you shower before you leave the house or you can fuck off
