Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

Could it be some people are incontinent/double incontinent?

Having read threads on here where people have said they shower twice a week and some before they go to bed? It’s not surprising.

Dirty sods!

I shower every evening - I am not a dirty sod and do not smell in the morning.

Use a mix of white vinegar and water and spray on your clothes in the areas you know holds the sweat the most. The vinegar will remove the smells completely. Clothes don’t smell of vinegar afterwards. Used to do that with my old running gear!

Thanks, I do this but it only works in conjunction with the 60 degree wash.

It’s actually vile. Shower in the evening before bed, stick a load of deodorant on and make sure you’re in light sheets and light pyjamas. That’s all it takes

I think that can be the problem though showering in the evening, by the time you leave the house the next day it will be almost 12 hours since you showered plus you’ve lay in your own sweat during the night. I always shower first thing so I am fresh for the day.

I used to work at CEX and it is famous for having some very.... fragrant customers.

There are people who have a certain smell which is exactly like concentrated ripe sweaty arse crack, only a very few. I can only assume that for whatever reason (possibly MH related) they genuinely do not wash at all, or change their clothes, for weeks or months at a time. It is truly grim. I used to have to hold my breath when they came into the shop. Some people would chase them around with an air freshener, which I thought was a bit unkind TBH. There is a difference between someone who washes infrequently (e.g. 1-2 times a week) and someone who does not wash at all.

Even this smell is preferable though to the smell of the extremely heavy smoker. There was one customer who came in twice when I was there who actually made me feel physically ill and I had to go out the back to recover and because I felt I needed to wash my hands after serving him. I didn't even do that after people tried to trade in their used porn DVDs 🤢 He had a bit of an unwashed funk and terribly long/dirty nails, but the main problem was the cigarette smell. I honestly don't even understand how he was getting any oxygen. He must have literally been smoking every single minute he was at home and awake in a tiny booth with no airflow. There are heavy smokers and then there was this person. I can't even imagine how his house must have been like.

OTOH my grandad lived to 97. When he went into a care home it was revealed that he had not had a bath or shower since his wife died - nearly 20 years previously. However, I never ever noticed that he smelled bad, and he was always clean shaven. He used to swear by a strip wash at the sink every morning. There are ways to keep yourself clean without bathing.

With some people it can be hormonal, I have a friend who can literally be 5 minutes out of the shower and is already starting to smell. Friend is very self conscious and has tried all sorts, including through GP, but with limited effect, it’s particularly bad/ strong at certain times of the month. It is somewhat unpleasant but I know she can’t help it so don’t judge her for it or let it out me off being around her.

She should look at her diet.

Mykneesareshot · 26/05/2026 21:09

Is the rise in stinky people hand in hand with a rise in choosing not to work and weed smokers. Certainly is on my neighbouring estate (I used to work in a small Tesco on it).

Newcybrown · 26/05/2026 21:18

Most people that smell don't notice it on themselves, they don't think people need to wash every day and have basic personal and home hygeine. If they noticed i'm sure they would wash. But they either don't notice or don't care and like a PP said probably didn't have it modelled to them so it is thier normal I guess. Some people (not all, don't flame me) who have learning difficulties struggle with hygeine for a number of reasons. Doesn't make it any less unpleasent regardless of the reasons i suppose.

This is not me making an excuse btw, just an observation. I wash daily and can't bear the idea of being the smelly person in work. I work with someone who smells like cooking oil every day. Not sure if they don't wash or if its thier diet making thier sweat smell bad or if they do deep fry everything and thats how they smell... or a combo of all of the above!

YANBU. It's truly repellent.

Oh fucking hell @BertieBotts that's pyar minging.

Spaghettioverload · 26/05/2026 21:29

It really annoys me when people don’t wear deodorant. There’s no excuse for it, it’s disgusting.

HermioneWeasley · 25/05/2026 11:50

YANBU but someone will be along to make excuses like not everyone can afford soap 🙄

TBH I can no longer afford my water bill , they asked 1,200 this year , thats 500 more than last years bill ( I do wash though, just strip wash some days as also now cannot affrod heating oil for the hot water system)

CyanMaker · 26/05/2026 21:34

I used to work with a woman who didn't shave under her arms or wear deodorant. This caused two problems: The smell was nauseating and since we worked in the same room I was worried people might think when they came into the room that I was the stinky one.

You are still being clean though. You do have a wash. It's people who do not that are the issue.

If a thorough strip wash is done, you can be very clean. I don't think that comment was at you.

I'm sorry you can't afford the water rates though legally they can't stop water can they or am I dreaming that? I wonder if there is anywhere to contact to help with water bills.

Not sure if these are helpful but I really hope they do.

£1200 for water is not right. You must live in a mansion!

Its the welsh "not for profit" water, and apparently is is correct , belive me I have argued endlessly with them ( and no not a mansion just an average rental)

DelphiniumBlue · 25/05/2026 12:31

It’s not all it takes.
Like a previous poster said, some people start sweating within minutes of getting out of the shower, even with antiperspirant. Deodorant is just an attempt to mask, AP is more effective but still doesn’t work for everyone.

Perimenopause has interesting effects on armpit sweat and odour. Luckily ChatGPT recommended a combo of products and I r got it back under control. It really was awful in the first couple of weeks - I was showering twice a day and it didn’t help 😱

BusyExpert · 26/05/2026 21:46

This reminded me when my eldest son went to uni he would come home in the hiolidays and reek of BO. I couldn’t understand it he had always been very clean, showered daily used deodorant etc but I soon realised that the armpits of his clothes were yellow with old perspiration. The clothes were otherwise clean and by the time I had washed them a couple of times the stains disappeared.
one day he watched me filling the washing machine and criticised me for not filling the machine to its maximum, which I called overfilling to the point of absurdity, and being so extravagant that I was putting two detergent tablets in the wash instead of one.
Mystery solved and a blunt conversation was had about the effect his bad laundry habits had had on him
the thing was before he went to uni he did all of his own washing and there never was a problem but then his parents were paying…..

FluffyBenji23 · 26/05/2026 21:55

I think with older people especially men it's that they don't wash their clothes regularly enough. Your body can be clean and fresh but if you put on unwashed clothes you have sweated into, you will smell!

AlcoholicAntibiotic · 25/05/2026 11:59

Clutching at straws here, but not everyone keeps to standard hours. Some of the smelly people may be night shift workers headed home - in this heat I wouldn’t be surprised if some were a little smelly after work, even if they showered & used deodorant beforehand.

I have noticed a rise in smelly people generally, though. It always used to just be the odd man, now it seems to be a lot more men and quite a few women. I don’t know if deodorant has become less effective or less popular.

A lot of people are choosing deodorant over antiperspirant as they don’t like the aluminium and want to be more natural. We tried it and it was awful. The deodorant smelled lovely but after a few hours I was smelling awful. I do have hyperhydrosis but usually it’s more that I’m just very wet but the deodorants were just making me smell.

I just threw up in my mouth 🤮🤮🤮

I know a lass in her early 30s, who barely showers and she leaves "that" stink on everything she sits on! Her sister in law had to wash the sofa where she'd sat last time she visited and the carpet where her bare feet had been! Her DH tells her all the time she stinks and she takes absolutely no notice. No idea why she's like that as she's always dressed nicely and hair and make up always done! I stay downwind if I ever see her. 🤮

You change your sheets daily??

It put me in mind of that hilarious thread from a woman who wanted to change her sheets because her husband had farted 🤣
