Smelly people first thing in the morning making me cross

I completely understand in the UK we are currently experiencing extremely high temperatures, however......

why is it so many people smell really strongly of B.O first thing in the morning? I was on the bus Saturday morning around 9am and their were one or two people who smelled really strongly, not just slightly. This morning I was in my local shop around 10am and the man in front of me smelled that strongly that when he left, the smell even lingered.

I can understand if it was towards the end of the day, then it would be more reasonable that people would have B.O. I am just really irritated how these people think it's acceptable that other people have to put up with their offensive smell.

Those who wash clothes at 60, don't your cotton clothes shrink? I wash at 40 and they still shrink. I only wear cotton in summer.

I don’t know. I feel bad for my DS because as amazing and lovely as his TA is, she always stinks like BO so he has to sit with her constantly stinking. He has autism and likely doesn’t pick up on it, or at least can’t say anything if he does but I do feel for the lad! She’s honestly amazing and I really like her but she smells so bad.

I’m self conscious as hell about the way I smell so carry body spray and deo around with me to top up in the loo throughout the day. To my knowledge I almost never smell as a result. I do think some people are naturally more stinky than others. My DH showers every morning and sprays practically half a can of deo on but he reeks after work and it often ruins his shirts entirely so I have no option but to chuck them.

@Stardancerintheskye Jesus that is foul! No wonder you both split up with him. There is no way I could have stood for that!
I didn't know chefs were unhygienic? I've known two, both blokes, both showered and smelt fresh!

Im not saying all chefs are like that-not at all

But it is known that some dont and they are the ones you dont want near food

It's well known that a lot (not all!) use coke as well

I say chef-he worked in Bella Italia when i met him (hardly a top 5* restaurant!)

He doesn't do it anymore,he gave it all up to become a cocklodger and im guessing his girlfriends dont buy him soap/have a sense of smell

It was truly revolting-we all have bo occasionally

I was a bit wiffy yesterday-im off sick from work and had sat at home in my pj's,doing nothing and I could smell myself-the difference is,I had another shower, changed my pyjamas and changed the bedding (it needed changing anyway) before I went to bed and had another shower this morning (im not a clean freak at all)

He never washes or changes his clothes-ive never smelt anything like how he smelt

MoonWoman69 · 26/05/2026 12:36

@Stardancerintheskye Aww hope you feel better soon. It does get a bit pongy when you're ill, especially in this heat!
Yes, I knew about the coke. Seems to be a thing, but I suppose in a busy kitchen you need to keep going somehow, not that it makes it right! (I'd suggest energy drinks but caffeine has no effect at all on me!)

I'm just surprised that if we can smell ourselves, why can't other people smell themselves?! I know when I'm not fresh, as clearly you do. Maybe whiffy folk are noseblind to themselves, or probably just don't give a shit! I'm glad I do!
Get well soon x

JaneFondue · 26/05/2026 12:46

Well, today is definitely a two shower day as I have been on the Tube. Like a Turkish hammam. Am all for saving water, but needs must.

My father reckons (in his wisdom) that 'if you dont wash for 3 weeks, you cant smell yourself, you'll have no friends left but you'll have turned noseblind and wont care'

Im fussy about keeping clean (and have been since I was a teenager) but clearly some people just dont care

I sweat hard-i always have done and take steps like soap, driclur roll on (that stuff stings!) before bed,Mitchum roll-on,bio washing powder (clean clothes everyday) and (dare i say) my perfume

Im paranoid about smelling and have made my adult dc,friends and dp swear they'll tell me if I stink

He just didnt give a toss-hes out there and still picking up women to cocklodge from

His dream is to become as porn star (i know!i know how to pick em!) and hasn't got anywhere because he stinks so badly,-hes been told and still refuses to wash

He doesn't suffer from mental health,he just doesn't care

27TimesAway · 26/05/2026 15:57

That sounds like the type of thing my father woudl say!

DH has a friend (now in his 60s, and a complete arse in a range of ways) who when I first met him 20 odd years ago was one of those people who was evangelical about how your hair would eventually 'self clean' if you stopped washing it. He was wanging on about it and turned to his girlfriend at the time to say 'My hair doesn't smell, does it?'. He was taken down several pegs when she sighed and said 'I told you last week I didn;t want you to bury your face in my breasts any more, didn't I?...... I was being polite'.

Clutching at straws here, but not everyone keeps to standard hours. Some of the smelly people may be night shift workers headed home - in this heat I wouldn’t be surprised if some were a little smelly after work, even if they showered & used deodorant beforehand.

I have noticed a rise in smelly people generally, though. It always used to just be the odd man, now it seems to be a lot more men and quite a few women. I don’t know if deodorant has become less effective or less popular.

I am a retired nurse, I specialised in dementia care, by the end of a night duty I really wouldn't smell good because I had spent the night dealing with incontinence, no one's fault, just the way it was, however I would go straight home and get into the shower before I did anything else

For some, too expensive I suspect.

Owlsintheforest · 26/05/2026 18:34

My BIL hasn’t showered since 2005. He STINKS

Zerosleep · 26/05/2026 18:41

I have been shocked to read that most people don’t shower once a day let alone more. People are gross and they stink 🤮

Besidemyselfwithworry · 25/05/2026 11:57

I used to line manage someone like this and I had to speak to her as it was revolting 🤢

A girl I worked with used to keep a fan on under her desk to ‘keep her legs cool’ - vile smell all round the office 🤢

mindfulmoaning · 26/05/2026 19:01

Two showers a day surely. One for others and one for the sake of a clean bed

igelkott2026 · 26/05/2026 19:03

Spottyvases · 25/05/2026 12:20

You sound fun OP - I bet you're a right old laugh at a party

I doubt you go to the same parties so is that an issue?

I don't really notice BO that often but when young (and not so young) men take their shirts off it smells fleshy and like a butchers. Yuck.

That is a massive waste of water. Although if I am in a hotel with a lovely shower, I do waste their water and have two showers a day..

JJMama · 26/05/2026 19:41

Totally agree OP, by the end of the day working a manual job, totally get it. But no need for first thing in the morning. It’s just rank and there’s no excuse, although there will be some trying to defend it. Of course there’s the odd person with hormonal issues I’m sure, but that doesn’t account for all the fetid humans out there.

LalaPaloosa2024 · 26/05/2026 19:43

MolkosTeenageAngst · 25/05/2026 11:52

With some people it can be hormonal, I have a friend who can literally be 5 minutes out of the shower and is already starting to smell. Friend is very self conscious and has tried all sorts, including through GP, but with limited effect, it’s particularly bad/ strong at certain times of the month. It is somewhat unpleasant but I know she can’t help it so don’t judge her for it or let it out me off being around her.

I worked with a woman who had this issue. Botox injections under armpits was a real life changer. Not sure how you’d suggest this to someone.

also, wearing cotton or linen instead of synthetics helps.

LalaPaloosa2024 · 26/05/2026 19:48

I’m so glad someone else has said it. It’s so disgusting and there is no excuse. The smell on the tube sometimes is just unbearable. It’s not just BO either, it’s those who don’t wipe themselves or bother to shower or wash their hair.

No excuses. It’s just laziness and lack of pride in themselves.

DeepSloth · 26/05/2026 20:04

BertieBotts · 25/05/2026 12:05

I think they don't notice/don't smell themselves! But a lot of people don't have good hygiene.

TBH I grew up without good hygiene being modelled, and it took me a while to understand that even if I could not smell myself in the morning, if you sweat onto dried-on sweat and dead skin, that is likely to smell. If you have fresh sweat on clean skin, it doesn't usually smell (at least, not as strongly). Sometimes I used to feel like it was pointless washing if I was going to get sweaty again, but the fresh sweat/clean skin combo is much better than sweating onto dirty skin, which will smell.

But I do also think that people have differently smelling sweat. My tops get a build up which doesn't even smell of sweat particularly, I don't know how to describe the smell, it's sort of like the stale carpet smell of communal hallways. This does not get washed away in the washing machine unless I wash my tops at 60C, so I save them up and do them in a batch with some towels every 3-4 washes so they don't get destroyed by washing at 60 every time.

However I don't have to do this for DH's tops or teenage DS's even though their BO is much stronger than mine. The washing machine removes their armpit smell perfectly fine. It's annoying TBH.

I also find that unless I wash under my arms with salycylic acid (found in a lot of face washes) the old sweat doesn't seem to get removed properly. I can get out of the shower after having washed and I am still smelly.

Use a mix of white vinegar and water and spray on your clothes in the areas you know holds the sweat the most. The vinegar will remove the smells completely. Clothes don’t smell of vinegar afterwards. Used to do that with my old running gear!

Suggest she tries a natural deodorant. I smelled a bit lire around my period but in the last couple of years it had got really bad. The smell was in my clothes, I always wore a cardigan or loose jumper at work to cover ut up. Natural deodorant (I'm using megababe and fussy) has fixed it. By the end of a hot busy day I can smell slightly of BO but a swipe of deodorant and a change of top fixes it. My clothes don't smell, I don't smell, it's wonderful. I think I was reacting to something in antiperspirant that got worse with hormones.

AlwaysHungry123 · 26/05/2026 20:17

My pharmacist a lovely lady smells really badly, to the point the whole pharmacy smells. It’s like an old sweat of unwashed clothes. I feel really sorry for her and was thinking of a kind way to let her know but I haven’t got the balls to do it, I do feel sorry for people working with her. I’m there only couple of minutes and can’t stand it. Maybe I should send her a letter 🤔

What??!!

Yep! He’s morbidly obese and can’t fit in a shower/bath so the last wash he had was when he was hospitalised with appendicitis in 2005 and the nurses washed him. He’s 46, unemployed, lives with MIL who enables/funds him… Their house STINKS of BO.

Yes thankfully his mum drives him everywhere so people aren’t subjected to the smell and all other senses.

But according to him, he’s healthy 🫠

It’s not even the smell of BO, it’s his sweaty arse crack too! It’s disgusting. His bathroom looks like something from an abandoned building. Disgusting.
