70th wedding anniversary

Yesterday afternoon we had afternoon tea at a local country house hotel. In the next room a family were celebrating a 70th wedding anniversary! I had to double check the sign on the door!! 70 years wed is remarkable! There surely can’t be many couples who make it so far. I’m not sure the traditional gifts even go beyond 60 years - Diamond.

My aunt and uncle have been married 67 years, they were married at 18 and 19. .70 years is astounding!

70 is a platinum wedding. My parents are currently on 68 years. They were married at 19 and 23.

my uncle and auntie got to 74 years (although my auntie did have dementia for the last few years).

DH and I married at 18 and 21 - we're on 36 years now, I guess it's possible we could get to 70!

It wasn't unusual for people to marry at 18 or so, so they'd both need to get into their late 80s and death, rather than divorce would probably be more likely to end marriages for that generation. The Queen and Prince Phillip were married for well over 70 years.

I’d be over a 100! Wow 😮

Yep, 70 is Platinum. Mum and Dad have got 2 years to go.

When I asked Dad what 80 years would be he said, 'You get your coffin' and I laughed and looked it up. He's not far wrong - apparently it is Oak for your 80th wedding anniversary,

Bloody Oak! I think if you've made it to over 100 (or around that) and you are still married you want something more elaborate than a coffee table!

My grandparents were married for 73 years. They were devoted to each other and died within 6 months of each other.

I did know a couple once who got to 75 years of marriage. Married at 18 (only 3 weeks apart in age,) and were both 93 when it was their 75th wedding anniversary. Apparently it's Diamond Jubilee, which confuses me because 60 is 'diamond.'

(Sadly, the husband in this couple died 6 months after the 75th wedding anniversary, so they never made it to their 76th.)

My parents made 70 years. They married at 20 and 22 in 1948. We had a big family lunch and Dad died four months later.

I’m attending a 70th wedding anniversary next week. Yes, must be unusual. They both in their 90s.

My grandparents managed, I think, 73 or 74 years. We had a massive family party for their 70th (we're a big family!). And they got a card from the Queen (requested, of course)!
