I believe when you hit rock bottom the only way is up.

@SaraOnSaturday Ive always thought that sliding doors is such a good analogy for life. And a good film.
I might not always want things to happen, but sometimes it’s needed for you to see what other possibilities there are. Something better can often come along when you’re least expecting it.

I think opportunities are everywhere - but when a door closes you are forced to think more deeply about alternatives. I don't think Door A closes and Door B opens. I think Door A closes and because that was originally the plan, you realise that there are Doors B, C and D which you could try. Hopefully none of those are trapdoors however...

No. A lot of closed doors aren’t permanently closed, or if they are, a very similar door may be right next to it. Or maybe you go out of the window instead of being stuck in a room with lots of doors.

I was in the position where I saw my opportunities in one career narrowing because my qualifications were outdated. Went off to uni and found myself another career. Looking back I heard that some of my former colleagues had lost their jobs in a massive re-organization. Being stuck in a declining career with outdated skills is not good.

Yes, was the case for me, exh left (probably 8 years later than we should have split) and you think that is it, on the scrap heap but then I meet my now dh, realised how bad it was before and how good life could be

fancypantss · 24/05/2026 11:50

No that's far too simplistic.

Grumpie · 24/05/2026 11:55

Yes. I’m an optimist

When one door shuts you have to shove hard at a number of other doors and eventually one will open.

I agree with this, we make another door open, for example, we see opportunities that we would have ignored otherwise.

Mumsnet did me dirty with this ai suggested title
😂😂😂

that's made me proper laugh out loud!!!

Anyway, I don't tend to believe in things. I know statistically that some folks just get loads more closed doors than others. That said, I do tend to have a positive outlook on life, and I see opportunities easily.

Or the building collapses with you inside.
