What's your favorite ghost story?

We're going camping this weekend and last time we had a great time scaring the kids (10 and 12) with a ghost story every night. We've already told all the family stories and I'm looking to expand my repertoire!

A retelling of The Golden Hand went down really well, and my daughter was suitably terrified of the old body in the backseat urban legend 😈

I was wondering if anyone else had any classic ghost stories that suit a campfire telling?

It’s not a classic but it’s a mumsnet classic. The Savernake Forest story that was on here.

Oh Whistle and I’ll Come to You, my Lad by M.R.James
The Monkey’s Paw by W.W.Jacobs
The Cat Jumps by Elizabeth Bowen

I’ll try and think of some more.

Oh I remember that one, it still gives me the chills - might be a step too far for my youngest though! There was another that I've been trying to remember properly about a woman seeing a man watching her in a nightclub when she was young, and seeing the exact same man, completely unchanged, some decades later... I remember that one being quite unsettling.

The Mangler by Stephen King is a good one too.

All of the MR James stories are excellent - I’ll add The Mezzotint.
