What is your thing that’s good for your soul?

Very rare day off. I’m sitting in my garden, looking at the sea, listening to the radio, sipping a cocktail and also doing some word puzzles. There are birds in the bird bath, the sun is shining and this is so good for my soul! Absolute bliss!!

Standing in the mountains and the way it plays tricks on your eyes. Not seeing a person or house for as far as the eyes can see.

Cup of tea, biscuit and a good book!

SpinSpinSugarPuff · 22/05/2026 23:33

Gardening, walking my dog, the sea.

@ComedycookYes definitely holding a baby. It’s been a long time for me but definitely a good thing for my soul. Thinking about it could really do with that now 😢

Giving my child the vs behind his back when he’s having a tantrum.

No, seriously though. When I see a patient who has had a really really bad accident and I operated on them on admission and then 6 weeks later I see them in clinic and they have full use of all limbs and absolutely no deficits. Incredible. There but for the grace of God go I.

See also when I’m stood at the patient’s bed side and they direct their attention to my male colleague who is not a surgeon yet and ask him questions about the operation so I answer and then they ask who is doing the operation… that would be me, the consultant. 🤣.

My garden. The whole of my living room is glass so I see my garden whether I am inside or out. It is tiny and 8 years ago it got too much for me so I had a make-over. I had a lovely landscaper but had to insist on my own ideas.

Having had the garden for 40 years I knew every aspect of it. It continues to improve all the time. I spent hours sitting in it or looking at it.

Cold water swimming. I also like long distance hiking, but not been well enough for that in awhile.

This too.

OP you have it ! Sounds absolute bliss. For me it is my slightly unkempt cottage style garden . Lots of poppies , forget me nots , a lawn that needs cutting and a little water feature. Have lots of tall old trees in the distance and even though we live in a town there is plenty of bird song.
We are moving soon and my garden although more basic and structured will have distant sea views . I am more excited about that than anything else and hoping the thrill of moving from a land locked city to the coast never wears off!

Having a clean home. But the one thing (and we do this as much as we can) is travelling with our children.

I do go on trips with my husband, but total happiness is only there when the children are with us. Mainly because then I can switch off and relax. No thoughts of home, work or nonsense. Pure in the moment bliss.

I also like a full body wax, followed by a proper shower and hair wash. I feel brand new.

Good for you. So annoying that that level of sexism still persists. Thank you for being so brilliant.

Being by the ocean
Being with animals
Being in my own clean and tidy space

Thankfully I get all three on a daily basis and I am incredibly lucky to get paid for the first two!

Waking on the beach, early in the morning when no one else is about, watching the sunrise.

The sea coming in to view after a long time away from it.

Flowers that I've planted opening in the garden.

Cool fresh air in the bedroom at night.

My children falling asleep in my arms.

Lovely thread 😊

Creating something - growing flowers, baking bread or cake, making lemonade, sewing a design.

Washing blowing on the line.
Line fresh bedding that night.
The gentle thud thud of the breadmaker making bread and then the smell!
Swimming outdoors - that being on a level with nature is everything.
The church bells chiming the hour.

Cold water swimming. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say it has saved my life, by lifting my suicidal depression. I love it!!!

PiggyPlumPie · Yesterday 11:25

Volunteering at Junior parkrun on a Sunday morning. My kids are way too old but there is something about seeing these young people that makes my heart sing.

We're only on week 8 and we've had nearly 300 different children taking part. Over 100 each week.

A quiet, off road hack on my horse.
A morning walk with my dogs at the beach.
A nap with my cat snuggled up next to me.

Being at a live gig of grass roots music seeing my favourite (unknown) bands. The fans have such a good time & there is so much love & goodwill in the room.

chocolateaddictions · Yesterday 11:47

Audiobooks, definitely.

hanging out with my teens when they let me!

chocolateaddictions · Yesterday 11:48

I’m enjoying reading about people volunteering at park run or working with young people like scouts etc.

I would love to do this when mine have left home. I think I’ll really miss the routine of having to get them to their sports and activities, busy as it is. So this might be a good way of filling that gap and helping out at the same time.

The speaking to the man thing is so annoying and weird. Statistically you’re much safer with a female medic in every way.

Flickitspinittwistitbopit · Yesterday 13:52

Not the point at all but where are you that you can see the sea bit still have anything other than seagulls in your garden?! When we had a Seaview house we only ever had guls or starlings 😒

CantMakerHerThink · Yesterday 14:27

I love tending to my plants, house and greenhouse. I get a huge boost from doing the jobs I “put off” like repotting and propagating etc. I also love creating and making stuff.
