Looking after a School Pet in the holidays

Im due to pick up a school pet in a few hours (DD is studying Animal Care). And now its actually happening im a bit nervous. What if it escapes or something else happens. This particular one has been at the school a couple of weeks. There was 5... now there is more due to incorrect sexing (they are all now kept separate but what if this one is also actually a pregnant girl?)

So... anyone want to share amusing or horror School Pet stories? One of my friends lost a chinchilla for several hours at Primary School.

We’re taking on the school Giant African Land Snails over half term. I hope they have low risk of escape!

Lucky your DD getting to do Animal Care at school.
Make sure you have an emergency contact number.

Not a school pet but DD's first hamster escaped twice.
First time he made his way from the dining room all the way up the stairs to DD.
Second time he hid behind the very large pine dresser in the dining room and we had to tempt him out with food.

Luckily the snake she now has hasn't so far escaped...

Used to have the school cornsnake and offer it to guests - it liked curling in people's hair!

I dont think they have snails. They have snakes, lizards, birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, tortoises, turtles, fish, spiders, stick insects, and now mice.

I think DDs are very lucky to do have Animal Care as an option (everyone does in Yr9, then its a Btec in Yr10/11)

Our school had guinea pigs called 'Hide' and 'Seek' until they went home with one family over the holidays and Hide was killed by the family dog.

My DD's best lesson at college was 'walking the dogs' Smile

30 years ago now my sister brought the class guinea pig home for the summer holidays and it didn't go back as the teacher left suddenly and new one was allergic. She happily lived with us for 3 years, my mum was not happy.

My son was looking after 4 female gerbils for the summer holidays, within the first week, one had babies. Before we could do anything about them, the gerbils ate the babies and started fighting amongst themselves - 2 were killed. One of them then had more babies - which were killed, along with another couple of adults! It was absolutely horrible.
4 gerbils went back to school in September but they were not the ones he brought home in July - they were smaller and I have no idea whether they were male or female, but the teacher never mentioned anything! 🙁

Fortunately no dog. I dont think I would allow a small animal if we did have one!

This is very similar to the events of the past couple of weeks in the classroom.
