Cat window guard I can use with portable air con hose

With the realisation it’s going to be really hot here from Friday I need a window solution.
I have a portable air con machine, the type you need to put the hose through the open window to vent. I also have 2 house cats.
I’ve seen a few products on Amazon and last year I used a window seal that attached with Velcro. It was pretty useless after a few weeks and the cats were tiny kittens then and easier to control.
This year I need something much more substantial.
Does anyone with cats use something they can recommend. I’m wondering about these type of things -

I would also post this in The Litter Tray board.
You might get more expert replies.

I use Cataire screens, have done for decades. I think they are better than Flat Cats screens, although more expensive.

I haven’t had the air hose issue but I have used a door screen from Amazon when I was containing a newly arrived cat who was recuperating from surgery in one room.

This had a two way zip and wonder if you could adapt that somehow?
Otherwise there are small air con units which use ice and don’t need an external hose which might help.

I would also highly recommend Dyson cooling tower fans. They are nothing like ordinary fans, the cooling power is incredible but they are very expensive.

@GloiredeDijon thank you I’ve ordered the Dyson fan. Fingers crossed

@GloiredeDijonWell my tower fan arrived but are they supposed to be so noisy? I agree the cooling is brilliant but my god it’s so noisy.

@GloiredeDijon I think I need something like cataire screens but I'm not understanding how they work. How do you open your window if there's a fixed screen there? Or do you open the window then "stick" the screen into place somehow?

JBJ · 24/05/2026 20:57

I’ve just cut a piece of Perspex to fit the opening of the window, secured it with Velcro, and cut a hole in it for the hose. Works a treat.

You get used to it!
Glad it is keeping you cool.

The Cataire screens have rigid frames so yes, you open your window and then fix the screen in place with either self adhesive velco or turn buttons.

The company only sells with velcro these days but I prefer the turn buttons for 100% security so if and when I need new ones (only if I moved because the screens last forever) I'd buy my own turn buttons separately. .

The Flat Cats screen come with velcro only because they don't have rigid frames.

@JBJ what would I use to do this?

I used flat cats at my previous house and I hated having to rip the velcro just to open and shut the windows. I'm surprised they haven't come up with something with a zip opening for the handle by now. Sorry OP I feel your pain in trying to find something.

StarCourt · 24/05/2026 22:29

@JBJ sorry i
meant what would I use to make the hole

I used a hole saw attachment for my drill bit I think the place I ordered from will make the cuts for a cost.

Edited

I tried one of these last year and it worked for a couple of weeks until the Velcro started to become unstuck
