Hairdresser has stopped bookings from July and I am wondering why

My hairdresser works for himself renting a chair in a salon. He uses an online booking system for his services.

I was booking a hair appointment and I noticed he has blocked off any further dates from booking from the middle of July. Previous to this I could browse dates months in advance. It looks like he's cutting off booking from the middle of July. I saw before this a few weeks ago that he has the who of October blocked off. I presumed possibly a holiday. Now it's it's like from the middle of July there's nothing.

My mind is wandering thinking - is he leaving hairdressing and why hasn't he said anything on his social media? He had reduced availability this year. He stopped Saturday bookings and he's not posting much hair/work pictures any more on his social media. It does look like some reduced availablity and now from July - nothing.

Has anyone else experienced the same from their hairdresser and what was it? Are they leaving hairdressing or opening up a cabin/salon from home or going something else.

I am just a little disappointed, that's all.

ds's barber doesn't allow bookings very far in advance as he is flexible with his own hours and only opens then up in the app when he knows when he is working to save wasting time having to rearrange with clients later, he also finds more people forget/change their appointments if booked too far in advance leaving him with too many gaps.

Maybe yours has similar issues. A quick text saying "Hi Simon, I'm trying to plan my appointment for mid July but can see the calendar is shut, are you around in July?" will get the answer MN cannot give you.

I get your dissapointment, it's hard enough to find a good professional, I've had plenty of nail masters leaving the salon I was frequent at to start their own business. Could you ask him directly why has he stopped bookings? Maybe he'll start and run his own place or maybe he'll be switching places and you'll be able to still get to him elsewhere.

What is a ‘nail master’? Is it different from someone who works in a nail salon?

Genuine question - what is the difference between one person doing your nails and any other one? Surely it’s not rocket science, can be it that different?

EarthlyNightshade · 20/05/2026 09:28

I experienced something like this with my hairdresser.
It was very cloak and dagger. My mind went everywhere, I was worried she didn't want to see me any more.

I resolved it by sending her a text to ask.

You could always ask him?

sorry, I posted in wrong thread

MajorProcrastination · 20/05/2026 09:47

It's not really any of your business. I know you're looking at this from your perspective as a client but he absolutely doesn't owe you an explanation.

"Hiya, I was looking to book you in August but there's no availability, do you know when you'll be back or shall I just book somewhere else for then?"

It could be an operation that's booked in and he's unsure about how long the recovery will be. It could be a visit to another country to see a new partner or family or to investigate emigrating and he's not sure how long he'll be there. It could be major work on his home that he wants to project manage in the summer holidays. It could be an intensive course for some training thing or career change. It could be a hair transplant or a butt implant or a hip replacement or a bowel resection or absolutely anything. It could be uncertainty about the premisses.

Ask him but he doesn't have to tell you anything.

BridgetJonesV2 · 20/05/2026 09:48

I can only book two appointments in advance with the salon I go to. They hold a rolling diary of 12 weeks. The stylist I go to has to submit all holiday requests at least 12 weeks ahead as a result.

FourSevenThree · 20/05/2026 09:50

It's the lack of transparency on his social media.

Why would you expect transparency? It's 3 months from now. He is free to have plans which he doesn't want to announce so far in advance .

”And the award for the most pointless time-wasting thread in the entire history of Mumsnet goes to……”

🏆

Sorry OP I’m not one to troll people, but seriously!!

AmyDudley · 20/05/2026 10:04

He's given up hairdressing and gone into freelance topiary; it's a transferable skill, and he got fed up with hairdressing when clients started to complain about having giant chickens carved into their hair.

LoyalMember · 20/05/2026 10:07

In the name of f#ck, can't you ask him yourself? How the Hell are Mumsnet posters supposed to know?
😆

KnitWitsAnonymous · 20/05/2026 10:13

Even if you told us your hairdressers name is Kevin, the salon is Village Hair and you live in St Mary's Mead it's unlikely anyone on MN could supply you with the correct answer

Ooh, hang on a minute . . . Miss Marple! Miss Marple!

I'm now hooked...

I used to go to a hairdresser very close to home. At one time I thought she had closed but it turned out she was only coming in (own salon) when there was an appointment snd even then sge didn'tturn all the lights on. Then she disappeared altogether and the place is now a dog groomer - not the same lady. My DH thought it was a money laundering set-up but I think her children went to secondary school and she just got another job.

It's the lack of transparency on his social media. You would think he would write something about his limited appointments going forward and just let us as clients know.

It’s.None.Of.Your.Business

It's not only in July. It looks like a stop to bookings from July onwards.

My mum´s hairdresser did this, they were retiring, her husband and her, they went on a mega cruise that July.

Wow! He doesn’t owe you or his client “transparency”.

Have we really become this entitled? And -for lack of a better word - enmeshed?

Dibble135 · 20/05/2026 11:04

I had this very recently. The reason was she decided to find employment for the security of a regular wage and sick pay etc. She wanted to tell each client personally so didn’t post on socials

Tink3rbell30 · 20/05/2026 11:10

5 pages and still not simply asked him?!

Jesus F#ck, no wonder he's chucking it if this is how entitled some of his clients are. He probably can't be bothered with it anymore.

angelos02 · 20/05/2026 11:55

He's just a hairdresser you go to. You aren't friends. This is such a weird concept to me. It is just a hair-do, not heart-surgery and even if it was, their personal life is none of your business.

Itsanewdawnitsanewdayitsanewlife4me · 20/05/2026 13:42

He could be ill and need time off to get treatment and may be wanting to only tell his clients face to face, not everything is for social media.

pitchblackromance · 20/05/2026 14:30

MayRedRose · 20/05/2026 01:34

His clients are his own and not the salons. I never contacted to salon to book him because he used a separate online system different from the salon. His name doesn't appear as staff under the salons page either. He's reallying not poaching anyone.

Doesn't matter - some salons will still enforce that renters can't advertising where they are moving to while still renting for them.

It might sound like a mad idea, but maybe ask him.

Seagoats · 20/05/2026 21:26

Maybe hes fed up with having his whole year booked up with little say in the matter
