Suspected hate crime.

Compare this to the synagogue stabbing in Manchester, the shooting in Australia and the stabbing in Golders Green which were called terrorism…

It is San Diego in USA.

Santiago is in Chile.

Sskka · 19/05/2026 10:15

‘Terrorism’ has a specific meaning though – the use of violence to achieve political ends. Both parts are important, and we don’t know whether there is a political motive to this.

People talk about the word like it’s an official signifier of how bad something is, but that’s not what it means.

McSpoot · 19/05/2026 10:15

You may want to correct your title (or ask MN to do so). San Diego (in the US) not Santiago (in Chile). I assume you know this and it was a typo, but still good to correct as it is very confusing.

In terms of what it is call - BBC (and other news outlets) can only use what the officials are calling it.

Well those were in different countries but great whataboutism. That'll really help.

It is possible to call out how something like this is reported and investigated without suggesting Jews somehow have it better because when we're murdered, and the attacker has ideological driven motives, it gets called terrorism.

I agree it should be classed as terrorism as it seems to meet all the criteria, with more details coming out about extremist symbols on the shooters things.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 19/05/2026 10:20

My heart goes out to these victims and survivors of terrorism 😞

AmethystDeceiver · 19/05/2026 10:22

You need to correct your title OP, and consider rewording your first post. That is, if you want to engage in a serious discussion. But maybe you don't?

Wouldcou · 19/05/2026 22:56

It is under reported and already I’ve seen in the US talks of mental health. It needs to be labelled a terrorist attack.
