Sunday lunch roast alternatives

Please share your favourite Sunday lunch ideas. I love a Sunday roast but DS seems to be in a phase of hating roast dinners and as the weather (hopefully) warms up I’m never as keen on a roast. But equally I love a Sunday main meal to be different from the weekday dinners?!Grin Especially helpful if it’s a slow cooker dish as we like to get the DC out and about somewhere on a Sunday afternoon for a few hours.

Roast chicken with salad and bread?

7238SM · 16/05/2026 20:03

-Brining the chicken or meat can make a massive difference to flavour https://www.recipetineats.com/chicken-brine-recipe/
-Roast duck and veg. Asda has them for £7.50 currently.
-Pork shoulder slow roasted
If you don't want a roast meal, then experiment with food from other cultures.

-Thai curries like red, green, yellow or the many salads like Thai beef salad. You can tweak the spiciness. https://www.recipetineats.com/thai-red-curry-with-chicken/ https://thewoksoflife.com/thai-beef-salad/
-Ottolenghi has some great recipes for something different
-Slow cooked tagine with cous cous and salad
-Quiche you've made the day before and salad

A spring/summer one I do is roast chicken, asparagus and nice baguette with butter.

Or slow roasted lamb, salads, hummus, olives and flatbread.

Pulled pork, rainbow slaw on brioche buns.

We still roast the meat (mostly chicken) and then do baguette and salad. Yum!

Slow cooker doesn’t say warm weather food to me. If I want to make something quicker than a full roast and more summery I’d do a spatchcock chicken with salad, or steak, or a substantial salad like nicoise, or some lovely fish.

Sunday is my favourite cooking day because I have the time, but I very rarely do a roast. It can be anything I can cook from scratch, most recently the tinga tacos recipe on BBC Good Food. Tomorrow I fancy trying to make pasta.

When you say chicken with salad and bread/baguette, do you mean you make sandwiches/rolls with the chicken inside the bread and eat that?

I often do a roast chicken or side of salmon and have it with potato salad, grilled asparagus, Greek salad and crusty bread!

Steak, chips and green salad.

favoutites at the moment here:

Cuban mojo pork, leftover pork in Cuban sandwiches. I’m a big fan of the BBQ and didvthudcyesterdaynoutsude.

Beer can chicken, asparagus and potatoes

Teryaki pork fillet, rice and Asian slaw

Greek lamb shoulder, lemon potatoes and Greek salad

Chicken tikka skewers, naan, tomato and onion salad

Paella

All better on the BBQ but can equally be done indoors.

my slow cooker goes in to hibernation at this time of year.
