Anyone work for the council or a housing association?

I'm disabled and since moving into my flat almost 10 years ago it's just going worse, about two years ago I asked my housing association if I would be able to do an internal transfer to another of their properties and I was put on the list. I'm in a first floor flat with no lift and need a ground floor. Also I have a disabled wetroom in my flat.

Just found out this morning my neighbour has moved out and left his flat with all his stuff in it etc, sort of a midnight flit. He lived in the ground floor flat. It also has a wetroom.

Wondering if giving them a call in the morning would do any good to see if I could be concidered for it, not really sure how it all works. It's literally below my flat and is everything I need, would also cut out the need for a moving company for all my stuff etc as I have no family to help me.

Anyone work for the council or a housing association, would it be worth me calling seeing as I am already on the internal transfer list with medical need or does it not work like that? All I was told when I first joined the list is they would call me if a ground floor flat became available and I havent heard anything since.

How can you be so sure the neighbour has permanently vacated the property? It's not normal to just run off and choose to be homeless leaving all your possessions.

How did you find out? How do you know he’s not in hospital or on hols?

I hadn't heard anything from his flat for almost a month and I thought it was strange, i thought he was away on hoilday or staying with someone. i called the housing association to do a wellness check just in case. His family have also been round taking some of his stuff from the back garden and said he was now living elsewhere.

I work for a HA, definitely call them, while most people have to bid if there is a special reason (ie disabilities) your HA can sometimes do a management move and avoid the bidding system.

Its worth a shot but don't get your hopes up. They may be people ahead on the list waiting and have been waiting for years too.
Ground floor flats with wet rooms are very sought after.
My son in law is on the list for something exactly like this . He's currently on a 4th floor and in a wheelchair paralysed, the lift keeps breaking down and they have to put him in a hotel, he's waiting too.

Yes, call them and ask if you can be considered for it. They may have to offer the vacancy to the council for a nomination so check if that's the case and if you need to approach the council instead. Top tip - tell them you need ground floor as you cannot evacuate your flat in the event of a fire. That has implications for them and they won't want the risk.

Yes ring your housing officer. It may be possible to do a transfer, but depends on the agreement with the local authority regarding allocations. Nothing ventured though..

Hmm. Fair enough. I guess it can't hurt to speak to them about it.

If you're on the man move list, express your interest straight away. I just did one with a lady who succeeded to a three bed but wanted a bungalow. She knew the tenant had given notice and asked if she could have it as approved for a man move. She was allocated it
