The Problem with Pitta Bread

Is this just me or does all pitta bread nowadays gives off quite a gross fermented smell in the toaster. My son's just made himself a quick snack and the kitchen smells eww.
I'm particularly annoyed with Morrisons because they seemed to be the last sellers of non-stinky pitta bread. Sainsbury's, Tesco & M&S have been like that for a while. Now Morrisons have changed the recipe, and lo and behold it has the same unpleasant smell.
Has anyone else noticed this? No other bread products smell like this unless they are seriously off. Pitta bread and hummus used to be such an easy meal... 😩

My local kebab shop makes their own pitta bread, and, man alive, it’s good.

Everything in the shops is that horrible long-life shite.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 14/05/2026 17:19

Have you tried making your own? They’re simple to make and you can freeze and toast when needed.

Ifyounevergiveup · 14/05/2026 17:28

Or Warburtons? Never noticed a smell and they’re HUGE

Pitta breads are really quick and easy to make.

Bjorkdidit · 14/05/2026 18:12

I was wondering if Morrisons pittas have changed.

They've been our go to pittas forever because they're the best supermarket ones by far, but the last packet were rubbish and I wondered if they'd changed them to the same crap everywhere else sells.

Disappointing. Their square scones are the only ones in supermarkets that are actually edible so hope they haven't changed them too Sad

Most Turkish restaurants do lovely bread, but I agree that normal pittas do have a weird smell to them.

TheDandyLion · 14/05/2026 18:15

I know exact what you mean. The supermarket standard pitta breads all taste sour to me especially the wholemeal ones. I've stopped buying them but I may try and make my own sometime.

MeganM3 · 14/05/2026 18:18

I buy it from the Turkish/Cypriot small supermarket and pop it in the freezer as I always toast pitta anyway. Done this for years and it’s always good, don’t know what the supermarket ones like these days. I also get the frozen Greek/cyprus pastry it’s very nice from frozen as well. Probably depends where you live as to whether there are these kinds of shop.

havingoneofthosedays · 14/05/2026 18:19

Does anyone have a tried and tested pita recipe 🙏🏻

LilyCanna · 14/05/2026 18:35

I am lucky enough to have a local Turkish shop that does freshly made flatbread and that is what I have with hummus nowadays but it has to be eaten the same day and if you freeze it then toast it sort of becomes a massive bread crisp.
I’m afraid I find making pitta too much of a faff even though I make ordinary bread regularly.
It’s clearly a first world problem but I get annoyed that such a basic foodstuff can be so messed up by whatever cost-cutting thing they’ve done to it!

It’s not just pitta that’s changed taste, it’s most food these days. Everything is just horrible these days , cost cutting I suppose.

ExamExamExam · 14/05/2026 18:39

Oh no, Morrison’s pitta bread was so much better than other supermarkets’.

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 14/05/2026 18:39

The pitta I buy smells DELICIOUS! The problem with pita is that the steam inside is hotter than the surface of the sun!

MrsWinslowsSoothingSyrup · 14/05/2026 18:55

Joining in the hope of a good pitta recipe . . .

Yes the supermarket ones are terrible nowadays. They taste bad and the sides are too thin to hold anything, yet thick and dry around the edges.

hardcorr · 14/05/2026 19:12

Pitta bread is the worst of all breads IMO.

Idontneedanotherhero · 14/05/2026 22:39

If you are in the north west booths do a good one!
