Freedom Day. How to celebrate?

BestestBrownies · 14/05/2026 15:20

This coming Saturday marks one year exactly since I successfully persuaded my narcissistic, abusive XP to end our relationship. It was a bloody long time coming, and took a mammoth, sustained effort on my part (but was by far the safest solution).

I have decided to celebrate it as 'Freedom Day' as part of my recovery and healing, and an acknowledgement of how far I have already come in just 12 months.

Here is where I need the help of the hive mind, with ideas for how to celebrate please.

  • I am in a new town, with no friends or family near/available, so will be celebrating solo.
  • Budget is very low as am surviving on savings until I can secure work.

I have already decided to go for a long walk with my dog in the morning, and treat myself to a coffee in a cafe with lovely views, but need a few more ideas for the rest of the day please.

Thank you

Congratulations on freedom day 🥳
I keep seeing adverts for a Japanese head spa - if you have enough in your budget go for that!

I would, have a lazy day, have a long hot undisturbed bath, maybe get a bottle of wine, my favourite takeaway and favourite pudding know I wouldn't have to share with anyone 🤣

Youve inspired me to have my own freedom day @BestestBrownies , thank you!

Mines the beginning of the pandemic

I would recommend seeing a play or going to an open mic night and checking out the talent? Something about being around people at the beginning of their careers might feel fun, as youre at the beginning of your freedom

Congratulations to you ❤️❤️

I would do something creative to honour the day - writing or art that you can put on the wall and look back on to bolster you if times get difficult in the future.

I would buy my favourite foods and drinks and research today or tomorrow series or films you'd like to watch.

Buy something for your home like an oil burner so it all smells nice.

Communicate with a good friend.

A drop in yoga class

Definitely a takeaway.
I always think about food first!

frozendaisy · 14/05/2026 16:06

A pamper bath use all the best products you have in the house with a cold glass of wine and a great escape novel

Play uplifting music

bake yourself your favourite treat (going to depend on baking skills) personally I would do tiramisu

if you were feeling up for it you could post on a local woman’s FB group to see if any other women are around to meet up …… you might be surprised

What did he used to block you from doing? Baths? Flowers? Talking to friends?

Mine used to have the TV blaring, music on loud, stomping and loud voice, so I really value peace and quiet. My Freedom Day might incorporate wildlife or just watching the birds as they need peace and quiet too.

Although tbh, every day is Freedom Day from his blocking for me personally. Quiet, clean, tidy, eat what I want and when I want, tv when I want, can spend money that he can no longer take from me so clothes, simple house things like a cushion or candle, bunch of flowers, cat... every single day is a joy.

Congratulations on escaping Flowers🍾

You're so right @Pixiedust1234. Every day is Freedom Day (or will be, once finances are settled and I can finally block him forever).

Some great suggestions so far. Would LOVE a soak in the bath, but only have a shower here. May adapt this idea and have a TikTok 'everything shower' as the kids are calling it these days, haha.

Also love the idea of doing something creative. Will have a think what.

Thank you for all the food suggestions. I am trying very hard to lose the protective fat suit my body developed, and am doing the Atkins diet (which is very boring, but working well). I am loathe to interrupt my progress, but might treat myself to something on-plan that's a bit nicer than usual.

Kitchen disco is now on the list @frozendaisy . Good shout! It will be music I like, and not the same 80s bands on repeat (he was significantly older than me and stuck in his late teens/early 20s music phase).

Does anyone have any good Netflix suggestions please?

A bath and a nice takeaway. And watch a really good film.
