Three women's bodies found in the sea at Brighton

BlackTogetherAgain · 13/05/2026 10:16

This is absolutely heartbreaking.

Why didn't anyone report three women were missing?

If it's a Channel crossing, from what I understand, it's rare that women go on the boats from France, and when they do they are pushed to the back / bottom, where the risk of being crushed is high.

If it's not a crossing, what on earth has happened?

Words can't express how evil this is.

Fully clothed. Attending a student night in student nightclub. Probably pissed. Very sad. Whoever started the rumour they might be migrants?

YourAmplePlumPoster · 13/05/2026 18:48

I see my reply about students going into the sea at night pissed has been deleted by mumsnet. I used to live in Brighton in the seventies and that was a regular event. But not expecting mumsnet mods to know that. 1,2,3... deleted.

As pp have said, they were three young women, late teens to early twenties, fully clothed and had been on a student night out at a nearby nightclub.

This is so tragic, totally unnecessary loss of life so young. I feel for the families.

I clubbed a lot in Brighton in the mid-Nineties, in this same nightclub, Quarters. We wouldn't have dreamt of going into the sea when we got out; so cold and dark, and the water really black. Not inviting in the least! And how did you not freeze to death?? We did once go down to the water's edge after being at Quarters, which was then known as The Beach, to watch the power of the waves crashing on to the shingle. I can quite imagine that they might have been swept in.

it may have been the bit you wrote about the boat,

Most years someone drowns off Brighton beach - usually male and under 25 - alcohol frequently involved not from nightclub drinking but all the day time bars along the seafront

Such a sad waste of young lives

Can we all please stop talking about migrants? This thread is nothing to do with that topic. It's tragic, and personal for some of us. I lost a lovely classmate in the Eighties to these dreadful riptides in the area, and he was washed east just like these ladies. I can't believe it's still happening.

I'm sorry about your friend and was thinking the same myself until I was drawn in by that post. I apologise for the derailment.

Thank you. We were all 12-13 and he was a lovely blonde boy whom all the girls fancied, including me!

TenTenTenAgain · 13/05/2026 19:19

Police are present around the student accommodation in Brighton right now according to my daughter. They've not come to her flat so she doesn't know exactly why they are there though.

The beaches really, really need some signage about the currents that pull people under and push them east. Maybe some good will come of this dreadful tragedy and some signs will be installed.

I didn’t see your post but I also posted that it was likely people going in the sea after a night out (as we used to do it all of the time) but I don’t think my post was deleted.

Perhaps someone misread your tone and reported it.

What the actual fuck is wrong with some of you?! Three women are dead. They were daughters, possibly sisters, wives, friends. Now they are gone. That’s not less tragic if they do happen to be migrants, but for the record they are very unlikely to be.

  1. Brighton is very far off course for channel crossing routes. Boats don’t land here.
  2. It would be very unlikely for it to be 3 women if it was a migrant crossing.
  3. Brighton is very popular with sea swimmers
  4. Brighton is a party town - people sadly combine drink and the sea with sad outcomes
  5. if they had come on a boat then the police wouldn’t be asking local homes and businesses for CCTV footage of their journey to the beach.

A more valid question would be as it seemed they entered the water from the shore, where are their bags and possessions, and why has nobody reported them missing?

Yes I know … but we are all human and make mistakes .. I stand corrected and I am heartbroken the same for these poor ladies 💔 all human beings who deserve dignity at this extremely tragic discovery

BridgetJonesV2 · 13/05/2026 19:54

Three poor families have had the worst imaginable day of their lives. I can't even begin to imagine how you learn to live with that Sad

Delatron · 13/05/2026 19:58

I’m reading that they still haven’t identified them and therefore haven’t notified next of kin? Not sure how this can be correct. Surely the students would know if friends were missing. Families will have been making frantic calls. Plus bank cards/ phones in their bags in the beach.

Perhaps because 3 bodies were found? There are drownings in seaside resorts frequently but tend to be one casualty. Unusual for there to be 3.
Seems like it was a tragic accident fuelled by high spirits.
Their poor families must be beside themselves x

Delatron · 13/05/2026 20:09

If they haven’t been identified yet then the families won’t know? I’m struggling to understand why they are unable to indentify them by now

It is truly, truly terrible, isn't it. What a tragic occurrence. I don't think I've ever heard of three people drowning at once in the sea at Brighton.

Maybe they have been identified but haven't yet been able to reach at least one immediate family member of all three. I can easily imagine that one set of parents might be on holiday, say. It's the time of year for cheap off-season hols with good weather abroad. They won't release any further info. until they are sure that all three families know.

Yes maybe - news sources say the police are still ‘working hard to
identify the three women’. I’ve cross checked this with the BBC who are normally accurate.

But that quote is from the police at lunchtime and is just being repeated over and over again because they haven't made any new announcements - it doesn't mean they aren't talking to the families who might not be ready to go public with the names yet

Don't really understand what the hurry is

.

Delatron · 13/05/2026 20:39

It says ‘in a statement this evening’ but agree I’m sure they are just not releasing any info until they are sure and all families have been contacted.

Pickledonion1999 · 13/05/2026 21:30

Could be that they are foreign students and therefore more difficutliy in getting hold of family abroad.

TenTenTenAgain · 13/05/2026 21:37

Probably because it takes a long time for the police to communicate most things for various reasons. We've waited overnight for updates relating to a crime that was committed against a family member in relatively simple circumstances. This situation is especially complicated because it involves three people and a recovery operation. I'd be surprised If we hear any more today.

People go out for nights out without a handbag/purse. Their phones may have been washed out to sea. So nothing apart from the clothes they’re in. If it’s not unusual for someone to stay overnight at a boyfriends or friends house any flatmates may take a while to realise someone is missing. It’s the last week of uni for a lot of unis so some people may have headed home if they’ve had their last exam. So potentially people could be the only one in their accommodation.

Yep, similar here (and a rude post of mine, to be fair, lol). Grew up there in the 80's/90's and pissed people going into the sea was a regular thing, as was daring to jump off the pier. The bars are right on the beach!!
