Today is a big day!!

I left my marriage 2.5 years ago. Although my ex H was a high earner he was awful with money and we were always in debt. We had joint loans and I (very stupidly) ran up credit card and credit account debts before the divorce and in the immediate post separation.

Money was always a worry when we were together but I decided when we were divorced I was going to sort myself out.

I’ve had to change jobs to wfh due to my disabled daughter and we are now in a much better position.

Today, 2.5 years post separation I can finally say I am debt free!! I have paid off 20,000 pounds in that time and also bought my ex out of the house, begun a small savings pot and tripled my pension pot.

For the first time in many, many years I am debt free and it’s going to stay that way!!! I cannot describe the feeling.

Fantastic news, you must be so proud of yourself. I’m sure that going through a divorce while tacking financial issues and having you buy out your ex has been challenging but you did it. Onwards and upwards!

SparkysMagicPiano · 13/05/2026 10:54

Brilliant OP!

I haven't been in your exact situation, but I have been in the position of burying my head in the sand about debt and can fully appreciate the absolute, total relief of getting everything back on track and not lying awake worrying every night.

Do something lovely today.

ifinallydiditttt · 13/05/2026 11:52

Ah thank you so much I do feel really proud I was in such a pit when we first divorced but chipping away constantly has really made the difference even when it felt overwhelming

Congratulations! That's amazing, you must be so proud.

I bought my ExH out 10 years ago and won't be debt free for another 10 years unless I get a windfall but am looking forward to it when I get there!

Anyone thinking of posting anything negative about this being a stealth post like I have seen on here today, just don’t. Scroll on and as my Granny said if you can’t say anything nice don’t say anything at all!

RS1987 · 13/05/2026 20:21

Do you have any advice on paying off debt? It’s such an achievement!

FelixRyark · 13/05/2026 20:30

How wonderful. You are an inspiration! I hope you enjoy an evening with meal of your choice and a glass of something nice to toast the beginning of a new era.

ifinallydiditttt · 13/05/2026 20:33

I still have a mortgage!! So not totally debt free, sorry if that wasn’t clear.

But when we divorced I had PayPal credit, next account maxed out on high interest, credit cards and then the loans ex and I took out.

I just had to chip away at it. Also had to take a loan for the next and PayPal accounts as the interest was huge and I couldn’t port them to interest free credit cards like I did with the rest.

concentrated on paying the loan off first as I could repay your it early to reduce the interest.

Its not been linear as sometimes I’ve not been able pay much at all but just chipping and chipping away made the difference.

i am not a super high earner btw just very focussed
