What a Circus - Keir Starmer

Just turned on sky news. Press pack outside Downing Street yelling at Minister as they walk in. They're not answering. It's quite a spetacle. Bit like thumbs down in an ancient Rome arena. Apparently Streeting has launched a coup against PM. What a drama.

What are you talking about? It’s just ranting.

I've seen Starmer being called a narcissist several times on here. I think I'm a pretty good judge of character and he's the least narcissistic politician I've seen in long while. None of what he does is about him. I think he needs much better PR though!

Sorry - I quoted the wrong person and do agree with you, not the poster you quoted.

AnnPerkins · 12/05/2026 12:58

Of course he shouldn't resign. It's quite clear just from this thread that there is not one person in Labour who can replace Starmer and please everyone in the party.

And the public need to get out of the habit of screaming for resignations and general elections and stop these pathetic student politics. It costs us every time we go through one of these psychodramas.

I'm finding your response to my earlier post difficult to follow. I'm not sure what you agree or disagree with, but I think you may have misunderstood part of my post.

I don't think the results from last week's council elections are insignificant, but it is wrong to state the country has voted right, because so many areas didn't have elections. Yes, it's a sign a lot of people aren't happy. A bit like the first by-election for a new government often results in the incumbent governing party losing a seat.

Sorry, let me try again.

I agree the country didn’t ’vote right’; because your right the whole country didn’t vote.

The electorate which DID vote. Voted for Reform. Yes it’s not everyone obviously. But reform won the most seats by a long way.

So I am going to say the country did vote ‘right’. For numerous reasons I won’t bore you with but the main one is gains at local mean they ousted someone. Who could be rubbish or not. But holds are not really as relevant because if you have a good councillor doing a good job people will vote for them regardless of party so I just ignore holds when I look at local results.

People are always unhappy.

What is a bad move by Labour is clutching at straws and going oooh if we add all the ‘left’ together then we might have won so we need to go more left to capture all these people. That’s not going work. Again for multiple reasons I won’t bore you with. They will lose the centre. Thats instant fail. Leaving the centre to vote for conservative or reform. Aka. Reform win.

Viviennemary · 12/05/2026 13:06

Jess Phillips has resigned. Not confirmed. I wonder if there will be any more.

Starmer is right not to resign, its the last thing we bloody need. Ridiculous hysteria.

Totally agree. Economically any uncertainty is bad for the country.

IsthataYes · 12/05/2026 16:34

Oh what a circus ,oh what a show ! No 10 has gone to town...for a sweet little cat called Larry the lap ...he was getting so boooorrrreed same dad for at least a year is not what he signed up for.....

I've never seen that door so much in my life in past few years

Boomer55 · 12/05/2026 16:35

The non rebellion is over. 👍

RobinEllacotStrike · 12/05/2026 16:44

I'm not a fan of Starmer at all, but none of the replacement options appeal & will likely be worse. So I hope he stays if only for "economic stability" and rides this shit show of a govt out.

Bring on the election.

I'm a former lifelong Labour voter, now politically homeless.

Don't speak too soon. Though I must say I didn't think he would still be clinging on. Still it does me good to be proved wrong once in a while. Not too often though. A weeks a long time in politics, can't remember who said that but it's true. Even a day sometimes.

Anyone else getting a bit nervous about the economy?

Apparently the markets are tumbling - worse than they were under Liz Truss.

Is Starmer sacrificing the economy so he can stay in power for a few more days?!

You've posted this same message elsewhere today, including your own thread. I, for one, am not getting more nervous about the economy (which is fucked up, for sure, due to wars in Ukraine and Iran etc) we need stability not a constant change of leadership in the country.

WesStreetingForPM · 12/05/2026 16:57

Faisal Islam the BBC economics editor is tweeting that numbers are really bad today

Paul2023 · 12/05/2026 21:32

The plan is to merge the parties together to keep Reform out. Labour will go to the left, to try and keep their remaining voters.
Come 2029 the establishment will do all they can to stop Farage. I wouldn’t be surprised for a left wing ‘coalition of the willing ‘to stop Reform.

Paul2023 · 12/05/2026 21:37

For the record I didn’t vote Labour but I feel sorry for Starmer.
As someone who votes Reform as a protest vote.

I don’t think Starmer deserves the abuse he gets, I don’t personally really blame him for the situation we’re in.

Starmer didn’t cause the war in Iran, he didn’t cause the shit state of the country as a whole.

FFS- we can’t keep changing leaders because things arnt perfect. We had five conservative PMs in 14 years .. look at the chaos that gave us.

Starmer needs to stay and finish the job. Come 2029 we can judge him then.

Definitely not the greatest PM but I imagine he’s a decent man at heart.

RollOnSunshine · 12/05/2026 21:44

Popsimaxtins · 12/05/2026 11:08

He's tone deaf.

Obviously he has different views on immigration to Reform (he was an immigrant rights lawyer ffs) but the people have voted for reform in local elections as a protest. They cannot voice their upset at the way labour are dealing with this situation in any other way. The amount of people switching from Labour to reform should be a wake up call to Labour but instead Starmer doubles down and makes a speech about 4 million Britons acting 'unbritish' for wanting to be put first by their own government.

I didn't vote but 99.9% of reform voters are not far right, in the same way you will have the odd far left nutter. Most are just normal, working, British people who feel forgotten about.

My next door neighbour is lovely. She really is but this is my own lived experience. I have 2 children and work 35 hours, I get a very small top up from UC and am struggling to the point I have had to stop using my car everyday and have used foodbanks.

My neighbour is from Somalia and came here 6 years ago with 2 children. She has had 3 more children since arriving here. She doesn't work. She gets full benefits, rent included. Her husband doesn't work either.
This is not hearsay, this is information she has given me.

It is upsetting and frustrating to work so hard and get no where. My rent has been raised. I have a private landlord. I could lose my home at any time. I have no security. No way to get ahead because the cost of everything has shot up.

Why can't I get some of the help she gets? Why doesn't she have to work? Or her husband?

I just don't understand the system and that doesn't make me racist.

Well said.
If agreeing with this makes me "a racist" then I honestly don't give a flying fuck anymore.

Lifeomars · 12/05/2026 21:50

If he goes before mid July (which I think he will) my friend's child who turns 5 then will have had 5 PM's in their short life! Expressed like that it shows the endless chaos in this country. Speaking of the country, is anyone actually running it while all this plotting and drama is going on?

MJOverInvestor · 12/05/2026 21:53

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 12/05/2026 10:55

The country didn't vote right at the local elections. There's a huge chunk of the electorate for whom there were no local elections as they weren't due this year. The Labour Party still has control of a majority of local councils. I don't actually know what the turnout out was last week, but let's not make things up.

Clearly those elections held last week show that a lot of those who voted chose not to vote Labour or Conservative and voted Reform, LibDem or Green instead.

This

By the age of 24 I had only known 3 PM’s. Thatcher, Major and Blair.

We’ve had three PMs in the last four years alone!

Paul2023 · 12/05/2026 22:34

But if Reform and Greens both get the largest vote shares where does it leave us ?

I mean if a large section votes right and also left that makes us divided.. how can you govern a divided country ?

TirednessOnToast · 12/05/2026 22:36

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 12/05/2026 10:36

We don't need a revolving door of PMs. We need stability. What Starmer needs is an Alistair Campbell to make the messaging clearer, louder and consistent.

The current government is being blamed for macroeconomic issues caused by the current geopolitical situation: the wars in Ukraine and Iran and Trump's shift in policy towards supporting Europe and NATO in our defence.

Perfectly put!

Gloriousgardener11 · 12/05/2026 22:37

Journalists have lot to answer for, they stir the pot and create havoc and have far too much sway in the news.
Just report the facts and move on, we can make up our own minds we don’t need journalists trying to do that for us.

Dunnocantthinkofone · 12/05/2026 22:43

If any if these utter tossers put anywhere near the effort into doing the job they are actually employed for as they do on saving their own arses and bettering their personal situations, the country might not be in quite the bloody state it is.
The conservatives played out this f*cking pantomime for years, and now this shower of shit are doing exactly the same.
Is it any wonder that people are turning to more extreme parties of every persuasion?

Totally agree. People need to grow up and get the fuck over it. And also realise that Reform don’t give a shit about them and will royally fuck them over to line their own pockets.

WesStreetingForPM · 12/05/2026 11:11

Wes Streeting is the stability candidate.

The problem with Andy Burnham is that he will only come in after too much damage has been done.

Andy Burnham is car crash waiting to happen, as is every other even more left leading candidate. There is no successful economy with poor infrastructure, high taxes and low growth. The only question is how many more productive people are they going to force into poverty before they get kicked out?
