Do any major Car Hire firms actually supply small cars?

I don't use hire cars very often - usually just when I have a courtesy car if my own car is out of action for some reason, or occasionally if I am travelling. Every single time I do, I request a small car. Every single time, I am given something massive. It's just happened again (my car was dinked in a minor collision and I have a replacement car while it is being fixed) and the guy who delivered it, when I commented on how huge it is, said that in their terms it is a small car just because it's not a fecking 7-seater people carrier. It is 50cm longer and 30cm wider than my normal car and it doesn't fit on my driveway. Next time I need a hire car how do I actually get them to give me something that is actually small?

And why is there this trend for enormous cars anyway? It's bad enough to have to burn the fuel to shift 900kg of metal around but the entirely unnecessary extra weight to bump that up to 1,600kg is just pissing away petrol for no good reason.

You need to get my DH to hire it for you. He hired a Fiat 500 for 4 of us to drive round Scotland in. He’s not been allowed to be in charge of any car hire since.

Oh I would love a fiat 500! I would have no difficulty getting that on my driveway. And it sounds perfect for driving around Scotland too because there's some very narrow lanes there and these SUV monsters are too big to pass each other sensibly on a narrow road.

I usually get given a Fiat 500 when we visit family in Scotland. It's surprisingly spacious inside!
