Isn't Michael Portillo adorable as a TV presenter?

I grew up with the caricatures of him in Spitting Image and Private Eye, and could easily have written him off as a joke. So I'm glad he got to produce his fabulous train programmes - one of the few things my mum could watch with pleasure. Now that she's gone, I find myself watching his series again with great nostalgia and affection - not just thinking back to shared moments with her, but also pure appreciation of him!

The way he sails serenely across railway platforms, with that slow steam-ship upright gait... his lovely rosy, cheerful face... his bright jackets and trousers... the valiant way he pronounces alien names (quite convincingly, to my ear)... his genuine interest in people from all walks of life... his ability to make dull subjects fascinating... his absolute lack of ego: he really doesn't mind having a go at absolutely anything, not caring if he looks a chump (which means he never does)!

This is interesting because there are a few people I've come across in public life and private who I think would make brilliant leaders/PM and I wish there were more people like them in the world. I will share them (some have sadly died):

Michael Portilla
Michael Palin
David Attenborough
David Dumblebe
Jo Corburn (the lady who used to present Politics Live)
Ronnie Barker
My old woodworking teacher - his name I can't recall but I can picture him vividly
Chris Ackabuki
J K Rowling
Jeremy Pacman (before he sadly became unwell)
Sid James
Bruce forshife
Fat man from Cracker (I'm so sorry I can't remember your name(

Of your list, Ronnie Barker appeals the most. But what makes Michael P so special is his apparently sincere fascination with other people's lives.

He is a lovely bloke - he is a friend of my parents so I've met him a few times, and yes, he enjoys the presenting much more than he did being an MP!

Its funny as he was my MP when i lived in Enfield and i was v. happy when he lost his seat…sorry Michael! I watch with my 24 year old son who didnt know him as an MP and he loves him too.

He's a friend of your parents 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯😍😍😍😍😍😍

You have met him a few times 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

and you confirm all my beliefs about this fabulous person!

Hooray!

Were you never tempted to somehow ensnare him in some kind of large sealed crate, so that you could have him there permanently to chat to? I'm not sure I would have let him out of my sight.

He is so much better as a travel presenter than a politician. It's like two different people!

suburberphobe · 11/05/2026 21:25

Love those programmes too.

Maybe it proves that politics is doomed to failure? It's like the minute someone becomes a politician, they have to present themselves in a much more rigid way. Toeing the party line and all that.

DH used to work on trains and is actually in the background of one of the early episodes. Apparently Portillo and the team were a bit of a pain to deal with on the train though. I don’t know in what way but DH always shouts at the TV when he comes on. 🙈

SorrelForbes · 11/05/2026 21:28

I appeared in one of his train programmes (south coast) and he was a delight! He had to learn some lines of a play and then take part in a 1917 WWI sketch. He was very pleasant.

NO!!!! NO!!!!! Your DH must have something terribly wrong with him. LTB.

I went to one of his q and a shows in a theatre many years ago...i was sitting quite close to the stage and he was so charismatic.

Twiglets1 · 11/05/2026 21:32

I actually feel a bit worried about Michael after @Beachtastic comment about wanting to ensnare him in some kind of large sealed crate.

Oh OP did you see the episode where he tried his hand at DJing for (i think) Radio Caroline?

I fell a little bit in love that day!

No!!!! I'll look out for it.

And don't fear, @Twiglets1 ... if I ever actually saw him I'd just bow very politely, and sincerely!

I'm team Portillo too.

I wasn't keen on him as a politician but his reinvention of himself as a travel presenter has been nothing short of brilliant.

I just love how flamboyant (yet somehow genteel at the same time) he is. Also, his colourful suits and brave combinations of vibrant colours that I feel only he could actually pull off and get away with.

I think he's a fascinating character.

I just laughed out loud, my husband asked why and I said there’s a woman on MN who wants to lock Michael Portillo in a sealed crate.

His response “Misery”.

cantgardenintherain · 11/05/2026 21:46

Far prefer him now he isn’t a senior Tory.

durdledoris · 11/05/2026 22:01

He's doing a tour this year, keep wondering whether to go and see him!

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 11/05/2026 22:02

My theory is , people
dodn’t like his as a pol
because they mixed him up with Mandelson …

Lifestooshort71 · 11/05/2026 22:05

I'm in a minority! I find him patronising and ridiculous. He doesn't mind looking like a twit because he doesn't recognise he is one. Mind you I'm a bit biased - I crossed swords with him when he was ignominously ejected as Southgate's MP after he'd totally trashed the local constituents' wishes in order to fill the Tory coffers, he was arrogant and dismissive. However I do quite like the places he visits!

No he was famous in his own right as a very senior Tory … seemed nasty then but now he seems a sweetheart.
