Would you be more likely to vote Labour if Andy Burnham was in charge?

QueenStevie · 09/05/2026 16:17

As the title says really.

I certainly would. I have had massive amounts of respect for Andy Burnham since he spoke at the Hillsborough memorial and was changed at by the crowd and you could see how he took it and how it registered with him and, from then on, he took on the fight and ran with it.

I have also been really impressed by what he has achieved in Greater Manchester. If he'd have been able to stand in the Gorton and Denton by election, I have no doubt he would have won. I worry now that the ship has sailed though and Labour have just been discredited so much that even Burnham might not win a by-election.

Good. The HMRC investigation seems to be taking an awfully long time.

My base case is she has some other buried shit.

You can take the girl out of out Stockport…

Or she’s dragging it out as she’s no desire to be pm as other shit will come out. She herself is not saying she’s challenging, it’s everyone else. Same as burnham, he’s not saying it now either. It’s Claire west causing everyone a headache.

im no Labour supporter, bur even I can see she’s doing th4 party no favours. Starmer is terrible yes, but he is by far the best they have. Changing him out won’t change anything, the policies are not th4 pms. They are the parties, and it’s the policies that’s the issue.

I hear you, but Starmer is a gonner - events are clearly picking up the pace now. The Guardian is reporting there are 40+ signatures in and climbing.

He’s done.

Or she's dragging it out until she's been cleared by the HMRC? She won't be in a position to do anything today/tomorrow so keeping Starmer in place will buy her some time. That's assuming she is cleared obviously.....

Burnham would be better than Rayner. But I think Labour have blown it anyway. 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for everyone's input. I am generally more socialist leaning so that is why AB appeals to me. I would love for Labour to lean into their core principles for the remainder of this term and let everyone see how it actually goes, rather than constantly trying to please everyone and actually pleasing no one.

What are their core principles? Certainly no longer a party of the working class, that’s for sure.

Pat McFadden jeered and booed while speaking at London rally against antisemitism
Pat McFadden, the work and pensions secretary, was jeered and booed as he spoke at the rally against antisemitism in London this afternoon. According to the Press Association, protestors shouted “shame”, “it’s your party’s fault”, “when will you act” and “Jew harmer” at Mr McFadden.
PA says that Kemi Badenoch, Tory leader, was met with raucous applause and cheers and that Richard Tice, the Reform UK deputy leader, also received applause and praise when he spoke. Ed Davey, the Lib Dem leader, “went on to stage to some jeers but the MC of the event told the audience he was here as a friend and the boos stopped,” PA says.
Zack Polanski, the Green party leader, who is Jewish, was not invited to attend – a decision that has been condemned by some campaigners.

Joseph Finlay (@josephfinlay.bsky.social)

I cannot quite believe I am writing this but apparently Nigel Farage has been invited to speak at the big Jewish communal rally against antisemitism on Sunday (as well as Starmer, Badenoch, Davey but seemingly not Polanski). What next, invite Oswald Mo...

I find him hot

I probably would 😂

Carryitjoyfully · 10/05/2026 16:59

I think it could be interesting if he could be found a role where he spoke about government, but wasn't in charge in any way. As PP say, too thin skinned and too prone to flip to whatever narrative suits him best. He speaks convincingly, whereas I feel Keir Starmer is doing good work but can't verbalise it for some reason. We need a speech like the one Gordon Brown gave about how much the party had achieved, because there is no doubt in my mind that they are doing a solid job with the shit show they were left, but people just aren't convinced yet.

Incidentally, where’s Lammy’s place in line to the throne?

Anyone?

Edited

Lammy is an interesting case.

He was in post as Foreign Secretary when the Mandleson vetting was overruled.

And then conveniently he was reshuffled, before everything blew up.

When things escalated his presence was erased from the whole Foreign Affairs committee process. Had he not been moved, he would have had to appear and there would have been calls for his resignation.

He should have been called to answer in front of the committee due to his appointment at the time. McSweeny had resigned and had to appear. Robbins was sacked and had to appear. Why not Lammy?

Now he sits loyally at Starmer’s side in PMQS nodding, jeering and trying to stay awake.

He has been protected by Starmer. Now if that isn’t cronyism then what is?

Isn’t he knee deep in covering up the rape gangs in Oldham and there abouts? Just what Labour need.

Perhaps she has paid her tax

She hasn't had a response yet to find out if indeed she needs to pay any tax at all. It is a very complex case involving provision for her severely disabled blind son.

It’s so complex that the finest civil servants with all the tools at their disposal can’t come to a decision after several months - really? Either HMRC is not fit for purpose or something else is going on.

Angela Rayner has demanded that Andy Burnham be allowed to stand as an MP, opening the door to a potential leadership challenge against Sir Keir Starmer by the Manchester mayor.
The Prime Minister’s former deputy said that his decision to block Mr Burnham from running for Parliament earlier this year was a “mistake that the leadership of our party should put right”.
In an address to the Communications Workers Union just hours after Sir Keir delivered his reset speech, Ms Rayner said: “We as a party have to do better than this. And we can only prove we mean our Labour values by putting the common interest ahead of factionalism.
“And we can start by accepting that Andy Burnham should never have been blocked. It was a mistake that the leadership of our party should put right.”

TheChiffchaff · 11/05/2026 13:24

I don't think he's guaranteed to win in even a safe labour seat.
Opposition parties would form alliances obviously but the thing is that voters don't like being manipulated. I wouldn't want to vote for him if he booted our local MP aside for his own ambitions.

Altogether now - bullshit.

Sorry, but it stinks - my guess is she has voluntarily or been compelled to disclose some other shit she has buried.

Just my view, of course.

Jesus.

I mean, I once had a sex dream about Dominic Raab, so I've no room to talk, but Christ, woman.

He's like one of the extras in a pub scene in a Shane Meadows film.

Confession: I thought Raab was hot when he winked at Angela Rayner that time during PMQs.

So did she, the dirty bitch.

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 15/05/2026 21:40

What are Labour’s/ Streeting’s/AB’s core policies these days, please?

Genuine qu as I have absolutely no idea.

They aren’t cutting through to me, a UK
voter, in the slightest.

CurlewKate · 16/05/2026 05:42

I genuinely don’t understand why people think he would be a good prime minister. But I’m a
Labour voter anyway, whoever the Leader.
