Would you be more likely to vote Labour if Andy Burnham was in charge?

As the title says really.

I certainly would. I have had massive amounts of respect for Andy Burnham since he spoke at the Hillsborough memorial and was changed at by the crowd and you could see how he took it and how it registered with him and, from then on, he took on the fight and ran with it.

I have also been really impressed by what he has achieved in Greater Manchester. If he'd have been able to stand in the Gorton and Denton by election, I have no doubt he would have won. I worry now that the ship has sailed though and Labour have just been discredited so much that even Burnham might not win a by-election.

Absolutely not, he is much more of a politician than Starmer, by which I mean he will say whatever he thinks will do him the most good. I don't trust him even a little bit. I think he is soft on women's rights and would throw us under the bus without a second thought if the unions told him to (and they will). He has more charisma than Starmer, but that is not a substitute for substance or integrity.

Eyelashes, accent, unflappable air!

I mean, if we're objectifying him, he's got a funny little mouth.

topcat2014 · 09/05/2026 18:28

PMs all love foreign stuff because they hobnob with their own kind rather than us plebs

Ernestina123 · 09/05/2026 18:34

Did he not run for leader of the Labour Party at one stage? I think he was roundly rejected by the Party.

Also is it not likely that many who voted Labour because they saw Starmer as a safe pair of hands would go elsewhere if Starmer were replaced?

Christ most of them would do better than Starmer, he’s just the best the Labour Party has to offer. No more no less. And as said, irs a bloody low bar.

You haven’t named anyone. Who and why? Really interested to understand alternatives

Well I once had sex with Dominic Raab… 😳 but that’s an entirely different thread…😂

Did you??? Was it fun?

HRTQueen · 09/05/2026 22:10

Yes I would

Starmer isn’t connecting with people and that a problem come the next election even if things improve for the average person

I wish he did but personality and connecting with voters is important simply because most people are not really interested in politics they are interested in what a party and the party leader/possible PM can do for them and having a charismatic leader/one that people listen to half the job is done to winning them over

Portakalkedi · 09/05/2026 22:37

No, never voted labour and never will. Maybe I would have years ago when they actually represented working people. Hope they will not be in power again for a long time, if ever, after the next election.

Well, Louise Haigh is purportedly throwing her hat/phone into the ring, too.

So.

So what?

If you are unhappy with Labour’s leadership challenge, that’s your problem. Don’t take it out on posters.

You seem to think that Louise Haigh running would have particular significance and I don’t understand why…..

It was evidently an erroneous report - allegedly she wants time for Burnham to run - according to media.

For anyone who has not seen the speech here it is. Basically a government minister, all suited and booted being handed his are on a plate.

MN right wingers hate her, so probably think every one else does. There is a looooong list of Labour women the rw of MN hate.

Diane Abbott used to be on that list but since she became an independent and has been very vocal in criticising Starmer, she is off the hate list. Lucky her!

Viviennemary · 10/05/2026 06:47

Probably. I think it's worth a try. Starmer is finished. He's gone too far down the road to claw back no matter what he does.

LikelyLacking · 10/05/2026 06:50

He’s great as Mayor of Manchester but I don’t believe he’s got it in him to be PM anymore than Starmer has, and I don’t think it would make any difference to the trajectory that Labour are currently on.

Starmer needs to pull his finger out, be bold and start stepping up, but I’m not sure that bringing Brown and Harman on are the answer!

No hatred here - that’s evidently the preserve of others.

I also replied to the PP above.

Andy B is more attractive and likeable than Starmer and that does count for something, but he is more left wing. People voted for Starmer because he was centre left and was expected to cut the welfare bill and promote growth! He has failed dismally at both but that is the fault of the Labour backbenchers. The left wing of the Labour party is the problem. The UK always prefers a centrist party. Thats why Blair could win elections. It's so bleeding obvious. Why can't Labour backbenchers understand that?

I agree with this. The problem is with the Labour Party, their MPs and members. However Burnham is not more Left Wing. He is whatever he needs to be at any given time. He started out as an arch Blairite, then a Brownite then a Corbynista. You don't win over Labour voters going to Reform by going more Left so he will pivot more to the centre, meaning all the troubles Starmer has had will happen again.

mellongoose · 10/05/2026 07:30

Unless he got rid of Labour policies, no.

Give me a party that knows how to stimulate the economy and incentivise SMEs please.

Is being ' hated' worse than knowing you will probably never be elected leader because your own party will always vote for a White man over you?

The electorate have clearly spoken for ‘less socialism’, not more, as you say, but that will not stop Labour moving further to the left, post Starmer.

They have a death wish.

I don't think it is for me to say, you'd have to ask Diane that question. But the hate she recieves is understandably very traumatic for her.

Addressing the topic of the thread, Mahmood would be the best Starmer replacement - if Labour were to listen to the electorate, anyway.

QOFfE · 10/05/2026 07:42

I will be voting tactically to keep the very dangerous Reform out. The thought of losing our NHS and human rights simply terrifies me.
