Would you be more likely to vote Labour if Andy Burnham was in charge?

QueenStevie · 09/05/2026 16:17

As the title says really.

I certainly would. I have had massive amounts of respect for Andy Burnham since he spoke at the Hillsborough memorial and was changed at by the crowd and you could see how he took it and how it registered with him and, from then on, he took on the fight and ran with it.

I have also been really impressed by what he has achieved in Greater Manchester. If he'd have been able to stand in the Gorton and Denton by election, I have no doubt he would have won. I worry now that the ship has sailed though and Labour have just been discredited so much that even Burnham might not win a by-election.

Andy B is more attractive and likeable than Starmer and that does count for something, but he is more left wing. People voted for Starmer because he was centre left and was expected to cut the welfare bill and promote growth! He has failed dismally at both but that is the fault of the Labour backbenchers. The left wing of the Labour party is the problem. The UK always prefers a centrist party. Thats why Blair could win elections. It's so bleeding obvious. Why can't Labour backbenchers understand that?

The Labour backbench are like your standard know it all 17 year olds who want to be treated like grown ups but still want to demand pocket money off mum.

Incidentally, where’s Lammy’s place in line to the throne?

Anyone?

HoppityBun · 10/05/2026 11:47

Yes, because Keir Starmer is a man without vision, imagination or ability to communicate ideas for a better society.

Or if he has those, he’s managed to keep them to himself very well.

I don’t doubt that he has principles and convictions but, in the immortal words of that woman Thatcher, “he’s frit”.

RedRiverShore6 · 10/05/2026 11:48

I think Lammy is for emergency use only, like if Keir took a fall or needed an operation, like the aforementioned Raab😄 stood in for Boris when he got Covid.

Saw this on my walk this morning - pretty fitting! 😄

TypicalBlue · 10/05/2026 13:21

There are no circumstances in which I would ever vote for this dreadful party.

As in where you have to smash the glass case to access a small (and completely ineffectual) hammer.

Got it.

LOL.

The ‘artist’ cannot even be bothered to insert some profanities or add a male appendage - that’s how far Starmer has sunk…

QueenStevie · 10/05/2026 16:04

Thanks for everyone's input. I am generally more socialist leaning so that is why AB appeals to me. I would love for Labour to lean into their core principles for the remainder of this term and let everyone see how it actually goes, rather than constantly trying to please everyone and actually pleasing no one.

I would prefer it if Starmer remained in post.

He’s a reverse Midas, a one-man wrecking ball, an inadvertent Trojan horse, and the gift that keeps on giving to the opposition.

Leave him where he is.

Hi, over here! I read the post, LOLd, then saw it was you. Brilliant's post!

Wes Streeting has told Sir Keir Starmer that he is preparing his case to be the next Prime Minister, The Telegraph can disclose.

The Health Secretary is preparing to launch a leadership campaign if Sir Keir is forced from office this week, amid mounting speculation that the Prime Minister will have to resign.

When questioned by Downing Street about his intentions, Mr Streeting is understood to have told No 10 that he is not planning to challenge Sir Keir directly, but is preparing a “case” for a leadership challenge in case it “all falls apart” and a contest is triggered by another candidate.

Justusethebloodyphone · 10/05/2026 16:19

No

AmberSpy · 10/05/2026 16:24

No I wouldn't. No doubt he has some good qualities but I really dislike politicians who stand for a position (such as Mayor of GM) and then show that they are willing to drop that commitment in order to further their own career. He should finish his term as Mayor rather than the endless skulking around trying to force his way back into Parliament.

I also do not think that changing Prime Ministers every two years is healthy or good for the country.

And a statement expected imminently by Angela Rayner. We're in for a wild ride.

Viviennemary · 10/05/2026 16:30

She's simply awful the very thiught of her representing the country in the worldd stage would be really embarrassing.

He made 1 passionate speech about a non policy area, so what.

Just because he has a northern accent doesn’t mean he’s salt of the earth and a more authentic person. Didn’t he go straight from Oxbridge into politics?

Friendlygingercat · 10/05/2026 16:33

I live in Manchester (now) and he has been a good mayor but I would never vote labour and never have. They are the tax and spend party and taxes are too high already.

Doggodoggo · 10/05/2026 16:34

No. It's the entire party that's the problem not just their leader.

Good. The HMRC investigation seems to be taking an awfully long time.
